Vintage Saucy Shell Cape #428

Quick & easy to create, this becoming cape in a charming shell crochet pattern of three colors will become a season-spanning wardrobe favorite…perfect for many occasions!

SIZE: 
8-14, 16-20. 
Larger sizes can be made by increasing size of crochet hook. 
Directions are given for size 8-14;  changes for size 16-20 are shown in brackets.

MATERIALS:
Knitting Worsted 4 oz skeins: Color A 6 [8] oz; Color B 4 [6] oz; Color C 5 [6] oz
#H/8 Crochet Hook

GAUGE: 
2 - [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] shells with 1 sc bet shells = 3”;   
3 rows = 2”


CAPE:  SIZES 8-14 & 16-20
1ST ROW:  [BOTH SIZES]:  Start at neck edge with Color A, ch 57 [63], this ch should meas without stretching, 14” [15”], work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook & in each ch.  56 [62] sc.
2ND ROW:  Ch 6, turn, sk 1st sc, 1 dc in next sc, * ch 2, sk 1 sc, 1 dc in next sc, ch 2, 1 dc in next sc [V st]; rep from * 17 [19] times.

3RD ROW:  Turn, sl st in 1st ch-2 sp, ch 5, 1 dc in same sp as sl st, * ch 3, sk next ch-2 sp, [1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc] all in next ch-2 sp [V st]; rep from * across row work V st of last rep over turning ch 5.

4TH ROW:  Turn, sl st into 1st ch-2 sp, ch 5, 1 dc in same sp as last sl st, * ch 1, 1 sc in next ch-3 loop, ch 1, V st in next ch-2 sp; rep from * across row working V st of last rep over end ch 5.

5TH ROW:  Turn, sl st into 1st ch-2 sp, ch 6, 1 dc in same sp as last sl st, * ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, 1 sc in next sc, ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, [1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc] all in next ch-2 sp [V st]; rep from * across row working V st of last rep over end ch 5; break off Color A.

6TH ROW:  Turn, join Color B with dc in 1st ch-3 sp, work [1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] all in same sp as 1st dc, * ch 3, sk next ch-1 sp, next sc & next ch-1 sp, work [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] all in ch-3 sp of next V st [shell]; rep from * across row working shell of last rep over end ch 6.  19 [21] shells in row.

7TH ROW:  Ch 3, turn, work shell of [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in ch-2 sp of 1st shell, 8 ch 1, 1 sc in next ch-3 loop, ch 1, shell in ch-2 sp of next shell; rep from * across row, end with sk next dc of last shell, 1 dc in last dc of same shell.

NOTE: 
Shells will always be worked in ch-2 sp of shells of prev row & will be referred to as shell in shell.

FOR SIZE 8-14 ONLY -
8TH ROW [INC ROW]:  Ch 3, turn, * work [shell in next shell, ch 1,, sk next ch-1 sp, 1 sc in next sc, ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp] 3 times, work double shell [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] all in next shell, ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, 1 sc in next sc, ch 1; rep from * across row, end with work [shell in next shell, ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, 1 sc in next sc, ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp] twice, shell in next shell, 1 dc in trop st of turning ch; break off Color B.

9TH ROW:  Turn, join Color C with sl st in 1st dc, ch 3, * work shell of [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in next shell, ch 3; rep from * across row, end with shell in last shell, 1 dc in top st of turning ch.  23 shells in row.

FOR SIZE 16-20 ONLY: 
8TH ROW:  [INC ROW]:  Ch 3, turn, work [shell in next shell, ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, 1 sc in next sc, ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp] twice, * work double shell of [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] all in next shell, ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, 1 sc in next sc, ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, work [shell in next shell, ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, 1 sc in next sc, ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp] 3 times; rep from * across row, end last rep with work double shell in next shell, work [ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, 1 sc in next sc, ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, shell in next shell] twice, 1 dc in top st of turning ch; break off Color B.

9TH ROW:  Turn, join Color C with sl st in 1st dc, ch 3, * work shell of [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in next shell, ch 3; rep from * across row, end with shell in last shell, 1 dc in top st of turning ch.  26 shells in row.

10TH ROW:  [BOTH SIZES]:  Ch 3, turn, * work shell in next shell, ch 1, 1 sc in next ch-3 loop, ch 1; rep from * across row, end with shell in last shell, 1 dc in top st of turning ch.

11TH ROW:  Ch 3, turn, * work shell of [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in next shell, ch 1, 1 sc in next sc, ch 1; rep from * across row, end with shell in last shell, 1 dc in top st of turning ch; break off Color C. 

NOTE:  
All shells will be [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] shells for rem of Cape & will not be referred to again.

12TH ROW:  Turn, join Color A with sl st in 1st dc, * ch 3, work shell in next shell; rep from * across row, end with 1 dc in top st of turning ch. 

13TH ROW:  Rep 10th row.

14TH ROW:  BOTH SIZES:  [INC ROW]:  Ch 3, turn, work shell in next shell, * ch 1, 1 sc in next sc, ch 1, work double shell [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] all in next shell, work [ch 1, 1 sc in next sc,, ch 1, shell in next shell] 3 times [both sizes]; rep from * across row;

FOR SIZE 8-14 ONLY: 
End last rep with double shell in next shell, ch 1, 1 sc in next sc, ch 1, shell in last shell, 1 dc in top st of turning ch;

FOR SIZE 16-20 ONLY:  End with double shell in last shell, 1 dc in top st of turning ch; break off.

1ST SHORT ROW:  Turn join Color A with sl st in 1st dc, ch 3, shell in next shell, * ch 3, sk next ch-1 sp, next sc & next ch-1 sp, shell in next shell; rep from * 3 [4] times, do not work in rem shells.  5 [6] shells across row.

2ND SHORT ROW:  Ch 3, turn, work shell in ch loop of 1st shell, * ch 1, 1 sc in next ch-3 loop, ch 1, shell in next shell; rep from * 3 [4] times, dc in top st of turning ch.

3RD SHORT ROW:  Ch 3, turn, shell in 1st shell, * ch 1, 1 sc in next sc, ch 1, shell in next shell; rep from * 3 [4] times, 1 dc in top st of turning ch; break off Color A.

1ST SHORT ROW:  With wrong side of last long row of shells facing, join color A with sl st in ch loop of 1st free shell, ch 3, work [2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in same ch loop as sl st, * ch 3, sk next ch-1 sp, next sc & next ch-1 sp, shell in next shell; rep from * 23 [26] times, do not work in rem 5 [6] shells.   [28] shells across row.

2ND SHORT ROW:  Ch 3, turn, shell in 1st shell, * ch 1, 1 sc in next ch-3 loop, ch 1, shell in next shell; rep from * across row, end with sk next 2 dc of last shell, 1 dc in top st of ch 3. 

3RD SHORT ROW:  Ch 3, turn, shell in 1st shell, * ch 1, 1 sc in next sc, ch 1, shell in next shell; rep from 8 across row, end with dc in top st of turning ch; break off Color A.

4TH SHORT ROW:  Turn, join Color B with sl st in 1st dc, ch 3, shell in next shell, * ch 3, sk next ch-1 sp, next sc & next ch-1 sp, shell in next shell; rep from * across row, end with 1 dc in top st of turning ch.

Cont stripe patt, rep last 3 short rows [from 2nd short row to end of 4th short row] twice, rep 2nd short row once more [both sizes]; break off.

LEFT FRONT:  [BOTH SIZES]: 
1ST SHORT ROW:  With wrong side of rem 5 [6] shell of last long row facing, join Color A with sl st in ch loop of 1st free shell, ch 3, work [2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] all in same ch loop as sl st, 8 ch 3, sk next ch-1 sp, next sc & next ch-1 sp, shell in next shell; rep from * 3[4] times, 1 dc in top st of turning ch.  5 [6] shells across row.

2ND SHORT ROW:  Ch 3, turn, shell in 1st shell, * ch 1, 1 sc in next ch-3 loop, ch 1, shell in next shell; rep from * 3 [4] times, end with sk next 2 dc of last shell, 1 dc in top st of ch 3.

Now work same as Right Front from 3rd short row to end, but do not break off.

SHELL EDGE RND:

TIEING CORD: 

With Color A, ch 125, work sl st in 2nd ch from hook & in each ch, work back on ch work sl st on side of each st of ch; break off.
