Vintage Stylish Shell Cape #429

Quick & easy to create in a charming shell crochet pattern with a small collar, this becoming cape will become a season-spanning wardrobe favorite…perfect for many occasions!

SIZE: 
10-20. 
Directions are given for 10-14. 
Changes for 16-20 are given in brackets. 
Larger sizes can be made by increasing size of crochet hook. 

MATERIALS:           
4-Ply Knitting Worsted 4 oz skeins, 7 [8] oz
#I/9 Crochet Hook               
7 - 7/8” Buttons

CAPE:  [ALL SIZES]: 
1ST ROW:  Start at neck edge ch 59 [73] sts, ch should meas [without stretching] 16” [19”], work 1 dtr in 6th ch from hk [dtr: yo hk 3 times, insert hk in st, yo & pull lp thru st, yo & thru 2 lps, 4 times], * 1 dtr in next st, 2 dtr in next st; rep from * across row, end with 1 dtr in last 1 [2] sts.  81 [101] dtr in row, count ch 5 as 1 dtr.

2ND ROW:  Ch 4, turn, 2 long dc in 1st dtr [long dc- draw lps up 1”], * sk next st, 1 sc in next st, sk next 2 sts, 5 long dc in next st [shell]; rep from * across row to within last 5 sts, end with sk 1 st, 1 sc in next st, sk next 2 sts, 3 long dc in top st of turning ch 4.  15 [19] comp shells & 1 half shell at beg & end of row.

NOTE:  All dcs are long dcs & will be referred to as dcs.

3RD ROW:  Ch 1, turn 1 sc in 1st dc, * shell in next sc, 1 sc in center dc of next shell; rep from * across row, end last rep with 1 sc in top st of turning ch.  16 [20] comp shells in row.

4TH ROW:  Ch 4, turn, 2 dc in 1st sc, * 1 sc in center dc of next shell, shell in next sc; rep from * across row, end last rep with 1 sc in center dc of next shell, 3 dc in last sc.  15 [19] comp shells & half shell at beg 7 end of row.

10TH ROW:  Rep 6th row.

11TH ROW:  Rep 9th row.

12TH ROW:  Ch 4, turn, 3 dc in 1st sc, * 1 sc in 3rd dc of next shell, 7 dc [shell] in next sc; rep from * across row, end last rep with 4 dc in last sc.

13TH ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in 1st dc, * 7 dc [shell] in next sc, 1 sc in center dc of next shell; rep from * across row, end last rep with 1 sc in top st of turning ch.
14TH & 15TH ROWS:  Work in center dc of shells, rep last 2 rows [12th & 13th rows] once.

3RD SHORT ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in 1st dc, 8 shell in next sc, 1 sc in center dc of next shell; rep from * across row, end last rep with 1 sc in top st of turning ch. 

Rep last 2 short rows 4 times [all sizes].

12TH ROW:  Ch 4, 4 dc in 1st sc, * 1 sc in center of next shell, shell in next sc; rep from * across row, end last rep with 5 dc in last sc, ch 9 [all sizes], join with sl st in top st of ch 4 at beg of last short row of left front; break off.

RIGHT FRONT:

Now work same as Left Front from 2nd short row to end, but do not break yarn at end of last row, ch 9, [all sizes], join with sl st in top st of ch 4 at beg of last row of Back & Side Section; break off.

LOWER EDGE: 
1ST ROW:  With wrong side of last row [all sections] facing, join yarn with sc in 1st dc of left front, work [shell in next sc, 1 sc in center of next shell] 3 [4] times across front work sc of last rep in top st of turning ch, sk next 4 ch sts of ch 9, shell in next st of ch, sk next 4 ch sts, 1 sc in 1st dc of Back & Side Section, work across Back & Side Section * shell in next sc, 1 sc in center of next shell; rep from * across row, work sc of last rep in top st of turning ch, sk next 4 ch sts of next ch 9, shell in next st of ch, sk next 4 ch sts, 1 sc in 1st dc of right front, work across right front, work [shell in next sc, 1 sc in center of next shell] 3 [4] times work last sc in top st of turning ch.

2ND ROW:  Ch 4, turn, 4 dc in 1st sc, * 1 sc in center of next shell, shell in next sc; rep from * across row, end last rep with 5 dc in last sc.

LEFT FRONT BUTTON BAND: 
1ST ROW:  With right side of 1st row at neck edge facing, join yarn with sc on side of turning ch of 1st row, work 2 more sc over same ch as 1st sc, work down front edge & over end st of each row, work [3 sc over each dc or turning ch, 1 sc over each sc].  80 sc down front [all sizes].

2ND ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in 1st sc, 1 sc in each sc down front.

3RD ROW:  Rep last row once; break off.

RIGHT FRONT BUTTONHOLE BAND: 
1ST ROW:  With right side facing, join yarn with sc over end sc of last row of front,, work up front, work [3 sc over each end dc or turning ch, 1 sc over each end sc].  80 sc across row [all sizes].

2ND ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each of 1st 2 sc, * ch 3 tightly [for buttonhole], sk next 2 sc, 1 sc in each of next 8 sts; rep from * 5 times, ch 3, sk next 2 sc, 1 sc in each of rem 16 sts.

3RD ROW:  Ch 1, turn, work 1 sc in each sc, 2 sc over each ch loop; break off.

ARM OPENING BORDER: 
1ST RND:  With right side facing, join yarn with sc in 4 free ch sts to right of half shell, work 2 more sc over same ch as 1st sc, * work [3 sc over next end dc or turning ch, 1 sc over next end sc] 5 times, 3 sc over next dc or turning ch *, 1 sc in each of next 3 dc, sk next 3 sts, 1 sc in each of next 3 dc, rep from * to * once, 3 sc over next 4 free ch sts, sl st in 1st sc.  58 sc in rnd.

2ND RND:  Do not turn, ch 1, 3-joined sc over 1st 3 sc [to work 3-joined sc--pull up lp in each of next 3 sts, yo & thru all 4 lps on hook], 1 sc in each of next 23 sc, work [3-joined sc over next 3 sts ] twice, 1 sc in each of next 23 sc, 3-joined sc over last 3 sts, sl st in 1st sc; break off.

NECK EDGE:  [ALL SIZES]: 
With right side of 1st row facing & work along opposite side of foundation ch, join yarn with sl st in 1st st, work sl st in each of next 6 [7] sts, 8 sk next st, sl st in each of next 12 [16] sts; rep from * twice [all sizes], sk next st, sl st in each rem st; break off.

COLLAR:  [ALL SIZES]: 
1ST ROW:  Ch 50 [61] sts, ch should meas [without stretching] 13” [16”], 1 sc in 2nd st from hook 1 sc in each rem st of ch.  49 [60] sc across row.

2ND ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each sc of last row.

3RD ROW:  Ch 4, turn, sk 1st sc, [draw lps of dc up 1”] 1 dc in next sc, * 2 dc in next sc, 1 dc in each of next 3 [4] sc; rep from * across row to within last 3 sc [all sizes], 2 dc in next sc, 1 dc in each of last 2 sc.  61 [72] dc across row, counting ch 4 as 1 dc.

4TH ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each dc, 1 sc in top st of turning ch.

5TH ROW:  Ch 4, sk 1st sc, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, * 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of next 4 [5] sts; rep from * across row to within last 3 sc, 2 dc in next sc, 1 dc in each of last 2 sc.

6TH ROW:  Rep 4th row.

7TH ROW:  Ch 4, turn, sk 1st sc, 1 dc in each rem st across row.

COLLAR EDGE: 
With right side of 1st row facing, join yarn with sc over side of 1st sc of 1st row, work [3 sc over each end dc or turning ch, 1 sc over each end sc] along sides, 1 sc in each st across last row of Collar; break off.

FINISHING: 
With wrong side of 1st row of Cape & Collar facing tog, pin Collar along neck edge from center of button band to center of buttonhole band at opposite front. 

Using darning needle & matching color yarn, overcast Collar to neck edge of Cape.

Face Collar to outside of Cape. 

Sew buttons opposite buttonhole band.

FRINGE: 
Wind yarn over 6 ½” cardboard, cut one end, making 13” strands, take 3 strands--fold in half to form lp; with right side of Cape facing, insert hk in end sc of last row of buttonhole band at lower edge, pull lp thru st, pull all strands thru lp & pull strands tightly to form knot, sk next sc, tie fringe in same way in next sc, * sk 1st dc of next shell, tie fringe in next dc of same shell, work [sk next dc of same shell, tie fringe in next dc] 3 times, sk next dc, tie fringe in next sc; rep from * across lower edge, with sk next dc & next sc, tie fringe in 1st & 3rd row of buttonband.
