Vintage Town & Country Knit Cape #323


Quick & easy to create…classic design becomes a season-spanning wardrobe favorite!

SIZES:
Directions are for small [6 -10] & medium [12-16]. 
Changes for medium sizes are in brackets.

Materials
Knitting worsted, 4 [5] - 4 oz pull skeins
1 Pair #10 Knitting Needles
1 #G Crochet Hook
Buttons

Gauge
4 sts = 1”;
5 rows = 1”

MEASUREMENTS;
Bust Measurements: 
Small - 32 ½”; 
Medium - 38”

Pattern:
1st & 2nd row:  * K 1, p 1, rep from * across.

3rd & 4th row:  * P 1, k 1, rep from * across.

Rep these 4 rows for pattern.

Back
Cast on 112 [120] sts, k 6 rows. 

Work in pat to 4” from start. 

Dec 1 st each side on next row then every 6th row 11 times more:  88 [96] sts rem. 

Cont in pat dec 1 st each side every 4th row 4 [5] times, then every other row 10 times:  60 [66] sts rem. 

Back is about 24 ½” [25 ½”] long & 15” [17”] wide at this point.

Neck
Work 18 [20] sts & sl them to holder, bind off center 24 [26] for neck, work to end. 

Dec 1 each side every row until no sts rem.  Fasten off.

Side Section: 
Cast on 48 [50] sts.  K 6 rows. 

Work in pat to 4” from start.  Mark end of last row for back edge. 

Work in pat, dec 1 st at back edge on next row then every 6th row 11 more times, every 4th row 4 [5] times then every other row 10 times:  22 [23] sts rem. 

Cont in pat keep unmarked edge straight & dec 2 sts at back edge by working 3 sts tog on every row until 2 [3] sts rem.  P 2 [3] tog.  Fasten off. 

Since pat is reversible, work other side the same.

Right Front: 
Cast on 26 [28].  K 6 rows. 

1st row:  K 3 for front border, k 1, * p 1, k 1, rep from * across.

2nd row:  P 1, * k 1, p 1, rep from * to last 3, k 3.

3rd row:  K 3, p 1, * k 1, p 1, rep from * across.

4th row:  K 1, * p 1, k 1, rep from * to last 3, k 3.

Rep these 4 rows for pat, work to 4” from start. 

With 3 garter sts as front border, dec 1 at side edge on next row then every 10th row 8 more times. 

Work on the 17 [19] sts to same length as back to neck.

Neck
Bind off 6 [8] sts at front edge for neck. 

Bind off 2 at neck edge 4 times. 

Work the 3 sts then bind off.

Left Front: 
Work garter st border at bottom same as on right front.

1st row:  Right Side:  K 1, * p 1, k 1, rep from * to last 3 sts, k 3.

2nd row:  K 3 for border, p 1, * k 1, p 1, rep from * across. 

Cont in pat working to correspond to Right Front.

Starting at bottom sew side edge of front to straight edge of side sections for 4 ½”. 

Leave 9” open for arm slits then sew seams to top. 

With garter st borders at front edges sew front & side sections to back.

Collar: 
Cast on 72 [74].  K in garter st for 4 ½”.  Bind off.  Leaving 1” free at each front edge,

Sew collar to neck. 

Work 1 row sc around arm slits.

Fringe: 
Cut 3 - 9” strands. 

Fold in half. 

Draw fold thru st at lower edge then draw ends thru loop & tighten. 

Space fringes about 1” apart.
