Vintage Knit Lace Weave Cape #320

Directions are for small [6 -10] & medium [12-16]. 

Changes for medium sizes are in brackets.

Materials:  

Mohair 12 [14] - 1 oz balls

1 Pair #7 Knitting Needles for Small Size

or, 1 Pair #8 Knitting Needles for Medium Size

2 Decorative Frogs for closure

Gauge: 

#7 Needles: 5 sts = 1”; 7 rows = 1”:       

#8 Needles:  9 sts = 2”; 13 rows = 2”

Bust Measurements: 

Small - 32 ½”; 

Medium - 38”

Pattern: 

1^st row [right side]:  K 2, * k 2 tog, k 2, yo, k 2, rep from * across, end last rep k 4 instead of k 2.

2^nd row & all even rows:  P.

3^rd to 5^th row:  Rep 1^st row.

7^th row:  K 5, * yo, k 2, k 2 tog, k 2, rep from * to last 5 sts, yo, k 1, k 2 tog, k 2.

9^th to 11^th rows:  Rep 7^th row.

12^th row:  P.  Rep these 12 rows for pattern.

Back: 

With #7 [8] needles cast on 124 sts. 

K 6 rows for garter st border. 

Work in pattern to 12^th row of 2^nd pattern.

24^th row:  P 2, p 2 tog, p to last 4, p 2 tog, p 2 - 1 st dec each side; 122 sts.

25^th, 27^th & 29^th rows:  K 2, k 2 tog, k 1, yo, k 2, * k 2 tog, k 2, yo, k 2, rep from * to last 7 sts, k 2 tog, k 2, yo, k 3.

26^th, 28^th, 30^th, 32^nd & 34^th rows:  P.

31^st, 33^rd & 35^th rows:  K 4, * yo, k 2, k 2 tog, k 2, rep from * to last 4 sts, yo, k 2 tog, k 2.

36^th row:  Rep 24^th row: 120 sts.

37^th, 39^th, & 41^st rows:  K 2, k 2 tog, * yo, k 2, k 2 tog, k 2, rep from * to last 2 sts, yo,
k 2.

38^th, 40^th, 42^nd, 44^th & 46^th rows:  P.

43^rd, 45^th & 47^th rows:  K 3, * yo, k 2, k 2 tog, k 2, rep from * to last 3 sts, yo, k 2 tog, k 1.

48^th row:  Rep 24^th row:  118 sts.  Being careful to keep to pattern, continue to dec 1 each side on 12^th pattern row of each next 5 patterns:  108 sts. 

Continue in pattern, dec 1 each side on next row & every other row twice more.  P the 102 sts.

Yoke: 

Discontinue the pattern & starting with K row, work in stockinet st as follows:  Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 16 rows:  70 sts. 

Dec 6 evenly spaced across next row, every 4^th row 3 more times, then every other row twice. 

Work on remaining 34 sts for 3 rows.  Bind off.

Left side: 

With #7 [8] needles, cast on 58 sts. 

K 6 rows for border, 

Mark end of last row for back edge of side section. 

Work in pattern as on Back to 12^th row of 2^nd pattern, end on right side.  Keep unmarked edge straight & carefully keep to pattern, dec 1 at back edge on next row & on 12^th row of each of next 7 patterns: 50 sts. 

Continue in pattern, dec 1 st at back edge every other row 3 times.

P remaining 47 sts.

Yoke: 

Discontinue pattern.  Starting with k row, work in st st as follows:  Bind off 2 sts at back edge only 8 times.  P remaining 31 sts. 

Dec 4 sts evenly spaced across next row, every 4^th row 3 more times then every other row twice.  P remaining 7 sts.  K 2 tog 3 times, k 1.  Bind off. 

Right Side: 

Work border same as Left Side. 

Mark beg  of last row of border for back edge & work to correspond.

Left Front: 

With #7 [8] needles, cast on 36 sts, k 6 rows for border.

1^st row [right side]:  K 2, * k 2 tog, k 2, yo, k 2, rep from * to last 4 sts, k 4 for front border. 

2^nd & all even rows:  K 4, p to end.

3^rd & 5^th rows:  Rep 1^st row.

7^th row:  K 5, * yo, k 2, k 2 tog, k 2, rep from * to last 7 sts, yo, k 1, k 2 tog, k 4.

9^th & 11^th rows:  Rep 7^th row.

12^th row:  Rep 2^nd row.  Rep these 12 rows for pattern, having 4 garter sts at front edge, working until 9 ½ patterns have been completed, end on wrong side.

Yoke: 

Discontinue pattern. 

Work in st st with 4 garter sts at front edge. 

Work 2 rows on 36 sts.  Cont 4 garter sts at front edge, dec 3 sts evenly spaced across st st on next row & every 4^th row twice more; 27 sts.

Keep front edge straight, dec 1 st at side edge every other row 5 times, end at front edge: 22 sts.

Neck: 

Bind off 9 sts at front edge for neck then dec 1 st at same edge every other row 4 times & at same time continue to dec at side edge every other row until 2 sts remain.  P 2 tog.  Fasten off.

Right Front: 

Work border same as Left Front.  Work in pattern:

1^st row [right side]:  K 4 for front border, k 2, * k 2 tog, k 2, yo, k 2, rep from * across.

2^nd & all even rows:  P to last 4 sts, k 4.

3^rd to 5^th rows:  Rep 1^st row.

7^th, 9^th & 11^th rows:  K 4 for border, k 5, * yo, k 2, k 2 tog, k 2, rep from * to last 3 sts, yo, k 1, k 2 tog.

12^th row:  Rep 2^nd row.

Continue pattern, working to correspond to left front.

Collar: 

With #7 n[8] needles cast on 90 sts. 

K every row for garter st for 5”.  Bind off. 

Starting at bottom, sew side edge of fronts to straight edge of sides for 5”. 

Leave 8n ½” open for arm slits, then sew seams to neck. 

With garter st borders at front edges, sew to back section. 

On right side pick up & k 30 sts along back edge of arm slits. 

K in garter st for 1 ¾”.  Bind off. 

Sew short ends in place. 

On right side crochet 1 row sc on front edge of slits. 

Leaving 4 garter sts free at each front edge, sew collar to neck. 

Close with decorative frogs.
