Vintage Shell Cape & Cap Plus Size# 336

This crocheted cape with matching cuff cap is in an easy raised shell effect, worked in light-weight wool in two colors.

SIZES: 
8 - 14, 16 - 20.  
Changes for sizes 16 - 20 are in brackets. 
Increase size of crochet hook for larger sizes.

MATERIALS: 
Wool & Shetland Yarn, 2 oz balls, 10 [12] balls Main Color [MC]
   & 5 [5] balls Contrasting Color [CC]
Crochet Hook:  American #H/8;   English #6
6 - ¾” Buttons

GAUGE: 
4 dc = 1”;   
2 dc rows = 1” 

CAPE: 
1st row:  Start at neck edge with CC yarn ch 47 [56], this chain should meas without stretching 12” [14”], 2 dc in 4th st from hook, * 1 dc in each of next 2 sts of ch, 2 dc in next st of ch; rep from * across row, end with 1 dc in last st of ch.
There are 60 [72] dc across row count ch 3 as 1 dc.

Note:  Ch 3 is always counted as 1 dc.

2nd row:  Ch 3, turn, sk 1st dc, 1 dc in each dc across row, 1 dc in top st of turn ch.

3rd row:  Ch 3, turn, sk 1st dc, * 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc; rep from * across row but end last rep with 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in top st of turn ch.

FOR SIZE 8-14 ONLY -
4th rowCh 3, turn, 1 dc in 1st dc, * 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc; rep from * across row, end with 2 dc in top st of turn ch change to MC in last st as follows:  [with CC, yo, insert hook in st, yo & pull thru st, yo & thru 2 loops on hook, tie MC onto CC strand, & with MC, yo & thru rem 2 loops on hook; break off CC].  There are 108 dc in last row.

FOR SIZE 16-20 ONLY -
4th row:  Rep 3rd row change to MC in last dc.  There are 128  dc in last row.  [To change colors - see 4th row for Size 8-14 only.]

FOR BOTH SIZES -
5th row:  With MC ch 1, turn, 1 sc in 1st dc, sk next dc, a long dc in next st as follows:  [yo hook, insert hook in next st, pull up loop ¾”, yo hook & thru 2 loops, yo hook & thru rem 2 loops on hook], work 4 more long dc in same st as last long dc, sk next dc, 1 sc in next dc, sk next dc, a shell of 5 long dc in next dc, * sk next dc, 1 sc in next dc, sk next 2 dc, a shell of 5 long dc in next dc, sk next 2 dc, 1 sc in next dc, sk next dc, a 5-long dc shell in next dc; rep from * across row to within last 10 dc & turn ch [both sizes], end with work [sk next dc, 1 sc in next dc, sk next dc, a 5-long dc shell in next dc] twice, sk next 2 dc, 1 sc in top st of turn ch.

ARM OPENING - [ BOTH SIZES] - RIGHT FRONT -
1st short row:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each of 1st 2 rib trs, * sk next ch loop, 1 long dc in 1st sc of next 3-sc group, a shell of 7-long dc in next [center sc], 1 long dc in next sc, sk next ch loop & 1st rib tr of next 5-rib tr group, 1 sc in each of next 3 rib tr; rep from * 2 [3] times, sk next ch loop, 1 long dc in 1st sc of next 3 sc group, a shell of 7-long dc in next center sc, a long dc in next sc, sk next ch loop, 1 sc in each of 1st 2 rib tr of next 5-rib tr group; do not work in rem patts.  There are 4 [5] shells across row.

2nd short row:  Ch 3, turn, sk 1st 2 sc, a front rib tr around rib tr of 2nd row below that 2nd sc at beg of last row is worked in, * ch 3, sk next 3 dc of last row, 1 sc in each of next 3 center dc, ch 3, sk next 3 dc & next 3 sc, 1 front rib tr around each of next 5-rib tr of 2nd row below; rep from * across row but end last rep with sk next 3 dc & last 2 sc, a front rib tr around each of last 2-rib tr of 2nd row below.

3rd thru 12th short rowsRep 21st & 22nd rows 5 times [both sizes]; break off at end of last row.

BACK & SIDE SECTION - [BOTH SIZES] -
1st short row:  With wrong side of rem patts of last long row facing, sk next free rib tr at end of 1st short row of Front, join MC with sc in next rib tr, 1 sc in next rib tr, start from * work same as 1st short row of Right Front but rep from * 12 [14] times; do not work in rem patts.  There are 14 [16] shells across row. 

Now work same as Right Front from 2nd short row to end.

LEFT FRONT - [BOTH SIZES]
1st short row:  With wrong side of rem patts of last long row facing, sk next free rib tr at end of 1st short row of Back & side Section, join MC with sc in next rib tr, 1 sc in next rib tr, * sk next ch loop, 1 long dc in 1st sc of next 3-sc group, a shell of 7-long dc in next center sc, 1 long dc in next sc, sk next ch loop & 1st rib tr of next 5-rib tr group, 1 sc in each of next 3 rib tr; rep from * 3 [4] times but end last rep with 1 sc in last rib tr, 1 sc in top st of turn ch.  There are 4 [5] shells across row. 

Now work same as Right Front from 2nd row to end.

LOWER EDGE -
1st row:  With wrong side of last row of all sections facing, join MC with sc in 1st rib tr of Right Front, 1 sc in next rib tr, work across Right Front patts * work [sk next ch loop, 1 long dc in 1st sc of next 3-sc group, 7-long dc shell in next center sc, 1 long dc in next sc, sk next ch loop & 1st rib tr of 5-rib tr group, 1 sc in each of next 3 rib tr] across row but end last rep with sk next ch loop & next rib tr, 1 sc in top st of turning ch *, work across Back & Side Section work 1 sc in each of 1st 2 rib tr, now work from * to * across Back & side Section, work across Left Front work 1 sc in each of 1st 2 rib tr; now work from * to & same as Right Front but end last rep with sk next ch loop, 1 sc in next rib tr, 1 sc in top st of turn ch.

2nd thru 9th row:  Rep 22nd & 21st rows of Cape 4 times.

10 row:  Rep 22nd row once more; break off.

LEFT FRONT BUTTON BAND -
1st row:  With right side of Cape facing [right side of shells is right side of work], join CC with sc over end st of 1st row at neck edge, 1 sc over same end st as last sc, work [2 sc over each end dc or turn ch] of next 3 CC rows, 1 sc over end st of next shell row, work 4 sc over each end rib tr or turn ch down front edge, 1 sc in base of last rib tr.  There are 90 sc across row [Both Sizes].

2nd thru 5th rowsCh 1, turn, 1 sc in each sc across row; break off at end of last row.

RIGHT FRONT BUTTONHOLE BAND -
1st row:  With right side of Cape facing, join CC with sc in top st of turn ch at lower edge of Right Front, work 3 sc over side of same ch, work up front edge over end sts of rows work [4 sc over each turn ch] to end st of last shell row, work 1 sc over end st of next shell row, 2 sc over each end dc or turn ch of 4 CC color rows.  There are 90 sc across row [Both Sizes].

2nd row:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each sc across row.

3rd row:  Ch 1 turn, 1 sc in each of 1st 15 sc, * ch 3 for buttonhole, sk next 3 sc, 1 sc in each of next 11 sc [Both Sizes]; rep from * 4 times [Both Sizes], ch 3, sk next 3 sc, 1 sc in each of rem 2 sc.  There are 6 buttonholes in last row.

4th row:  Ch 1, turn, work 1 sc in each sc, 3 sc in each ch loop across row.  There are 90 sc in last row.

5th row:  Rep 2nd row; break off.

ARM OPENING BAND - [BOTH SIZES] -
1st rnd:  With right side of Cape facing, join CC with sc in free rib tr at top of arm opening, work around arm opening work [4sc over each end rib tr or turn ch], join with sl st in 1st sc; break off.

COLLAR - [BOTH SIZES] -
1st row:  With right side of Cape facing, join CC with dc over end st of last row of Right Front buttonhole band, work over end sts of band row work 1 dc over end st of next 4 rows, work across neck edge along opposite side of foundation ch in base of st work 1 dc in base of next 44 [53] sts, 1 dc in base of next ch 3, 1 dc over end st of each of next 5 rows of Left Front button band.  There are 55 [64] dc in last row.

2nd row:  Ch 3, turn, sk 1st dc, 1 dc in each of next 5 dc, * 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc; rep from * across row to within last 6 dc & turn ch, end with 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 5 dc, 1 dc in top st of turn ch.

3rd row:  Ch 3, turn, sk 1st dc, 1 dc in each dc across row, 1 dc in top st of turn ch.

Rep 3rd row twice; break off.

FRINGE: 
Wind CC over 7” piece of cardboard, cut one end thus making 14” strands. 

Take 4 strands tog & fold in half to form a loop, with right side of Cape facing, insert hook from wrong side over end sc of center row of front band, pull loop of strands through, draw all strands through loop & pull tightly to form a knot. 

Tie a fringe in this manner in every ch loop, in center sc of each 3-sc group & bet 1st & 2nd rib tr & 3rd & 4th rib tr of each of 5-rib tr groups across lower edge, tie a fringe over end st of center row of opposite front band. 

Trim fringe evenly.

FINISHING
Sew buttons on Left Front button band opposite button holes.

CAP - [ONE SIZE FITS BOTH SIZES] -
1st rnd:  With CC ch 4, join with sl st in 1st st of ch to form a ring, ch 3, work 9 dc into ring, join with a sl st in top st of ch 3 at beg of rnd.
There are 10 dc in rnd count ch 3 as 1 dc. 

NOTE:  Ch 3 is always counted as 1 dc.

2nd rnd:  Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in same sp as last sl st, 2 dc in each of next 7 dc, join with sl st in top st of turn ch.  There are 20 dc in last rnd.

3rd rnd:  Ch 3, turn, sk same st as last sl st, * 2 dc I next dc, 1 dc in next dc; rep from * around, end with 2 dc in last dc, sl st in top st of turn ch.  There are 30 dc in last rnd.

4th rnd:  Ch 3, sk same st as last sl st, 1 dc in next dc, * 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc; rep from * around, end with 2 dc in last dc, join with sl st in top st of turn ch.  There are 40 dc in last rnd.

5th rnd:  Ch 3, turn, sk same st as last sl st, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, * 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc; rep from * around, end with 2 dc in last dc, join with sl st in top st of turn ch.  There are 48 dc in last rnd.

6th rnd:  Ch 3, turn, sk same st as last sl st, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc, * 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 5 dc; rep from * around, end with 2 dc in last dc, join with sl st in top st of turn ch.  There are 56 dc in last rnd.

7th rnd:  Ch 3, turn, sk same st as last sl st, 1 dc in each dc around, join with sl st in top st of turn ch

8th rnd:  Ch 3, turn, sk same st as last sl st, 1 dc in each of next 5 dc, * 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 6 dc; rep from * around, end with 2 dc in last dc, join with sl st in top st of turn ch.  There are 64 dc in last rnd.

9th rnd:  Ch 3, turn sk same st as last sl st, 1 dc in each of next 6 dc, * 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 7 dc; rep from * around, end with 2 dc in last dc, join with sl st in top st of turn ch.  There are 72 dc in last rnd.

10th thru 12th rnds:  Rep 7th rnd 3 times.

13th rnd:  Ch 3, sk same st as last sl st, 1 dc in each of next 7 dc, * 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 8 dc; rep from * around, end with 2 dc in last dc, join with sl st in top st of turn ch.  There are 80 dc in last rnd.

14th & 15th rnds:  Rep 7th rnd twice; break off.

CUFF: 
1st rnd:  With wrong side of last rnd facing, join MC with sc in back loop of 1st dc after turn ch, * sk next 3 dc, [pull loops up 1”] work shell of 7-long dc in back loop of next dc, sk next 3 dc, 1 sc in back loop of next dc, rep from * around, end with shell in back loop of next dc, sk next 2 dc & turn ch, join with sl st in 1st sc.  There are 10 shells in rnd.

2nd rnd:  Ch 3, turn, 4 front rib trs around 1st sc, * ch 1, sk 1st 2 dc of next shell, work thru both loops of sts, 1 sc in each of next 3 dc of same shell, ch 1, sk next 2 dc of shell, 5 front rib trs around next sc; rep from * around, end with sk 1st 2 dc of last shell, 1 sc in each of next 3 dc, sk next 2 dc, join with sl st in top st of turn ch, sl st in next rib tr.

4th rnd:  Ch 1, turn, sk same sl as last sl st, work around rib trs of 2n rnd below, work a front rib tr & front rib tr of 2nd rnd below that 1st sc of last rnd is worked in, front rib tr around each of next 3 front rib tr, * ch 1, sk scs directly behind rib trs & 1st 2 long dc of last rnd, 1 sc in each of next 3 long dc, ch 1, sk next 2 long dc & next 3 sc, front rib tr around each of next 5 rib trs of 2nd rnd below, rep from * around but end last rep with ch 1, 1 front rib tr around turn ch of 2nd rnd below, join with sl st in 1st rib tr.
