Vintage Surplice Knit Shrug Jacket #505

The clever woman knits & fashions this gracefully elegant, bedjacket.  Feminine, cross-over design, lovely & smart, lace patterned, so certainly becoming to almost any woman…a season-spanning, wardrobe favorite! 
SIZE: 
38-40, & 42-44. 
Directions are for size 38-40, with changes for size 42-44 written in brackets.
[Size may be increased by changing to a larger sized hook.]

MATERIALS:
Beehive Fingering 3-ply Patonised, 1 oz, 9 [10] balls
Pair #10 Knitting Needles
1 yd Ribbon 1 ½” wide

GAUGE:
Stockinette Stitch [st st]: 
8 sts & 10 rows = 1”

MEASUREMENTS:
Bust 38”-40”:
Length at centre back 19”; 
Sleeve seam 15”.
Bust 42”-44”:
Length at centre back 20”; 
Sleeve seam 15”.

2ND ROW:  P.

3RD ROW:  K 2 tog, * wl fwd, k 5, wl fwd, sl 1, k 2 tog, psso.  Rep from * once.  Wl fwd, k 5, wl fwd, sl 1, psso.

4TH ROW:  P.

5TH & 6TH ROWS:  Same as 3rd & 4th rows.

7TH ROW:  K 2, * wl fwd, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, k 2 tog, wl fwd, k 3.  Rep from * once.  Wl fwd, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, k 2 tog, wl fwd, k 2.

8TH ROW:  P. 

These 8 rows complete one pattern [patt].

BACK: 
Cast on 135 [151] sts. 

1ST ROW:  K 1, * p 1, k 1.  Rep from * to end of row. 

Rep this row for Moss st for 14 rows total, inc 1 st at end of last row. 

Cont in st st, inc 1 st each end of needle on 9th & every following 8th row to 156 [172] sts on needle. 

Cont even until work meas 9 ½” from beg, ending with p row.

NOTE: 
When knitted to correct tension, work should stretch very easily in width to 20” [22”] & be 9 ½” in length.

TO SHAPE ARMHOLES: 
Cast off 4 sts beg next 2 rows. 

Dec 1 st each end of needle on next & every alternate row to 76 [92] sts on needle, ending with p row. 

Dec 1 st each end of needle on next 3 rows. 

P 1 row. 

Rep last 4 rows to 40 [44] sts on needle, ending with p row.  Cast off.

LEFT FRONT: 
Cast on 103 [111] sts. 

Work 8 rows Moss st. 

Dec 1 st at BEG of next row, then work 5 rows even.  14 rows in all. 

Proceed:  1ST ROW:  K to last 34 sts. 

Work 1st row of Lace Patt on next 25 sts.  Moss 9 [front edge].

2ND ROW:  Moss 9.  P to end of row [side edge].

Work Lace patt with Moss st border on 34 sts at front edge & keep rem sts in st st, dec 1 st at side edge on next & every following 4th row to 81 [89] sts on needle & end with 4th patt row at side edge.

When working Right Front, end with 5th patt row at side edge.

TO SHAPE ARMHOLE: 
Keep continuity of patt, cast off 4 sts beg next row for armhole. 

Work 1 row even.

Dec 1 st at armhole edge EVERY row to 41 sts on needle, end at armhole edge.

NEXT ROW:  [3RD ROW OF LACE PATT]:  K 2 tog, k 13, k 2 tog, wl fwd, k 5, wl fwd, sl 1, k 2 tog, psso, wl fwd, k 5, wl fwd, sl 1, k 1, psso, Moss 9.  Keep 17 sts in Lace Patt, cont dec 1 st at armhole edge EVERY row to 33 sts on needle, end at armhole edge.

NEXT ROW:  [3RD ROW OF LACE PATT]:  K 2 tog, k 13, k 2 tog, wl fwd, k 5, wl fwd, sl 1, k 1, psso, Moss 9.

Keep 9 sts in Lace patt, cont dec 1 st at armhole edge EVERY row to 25 sts on needle.

Keep Moss st border at front edge, cont in st st, dec 1 st at armhole edge EVERY row to 9 sts on needle.

Work 3” [3 ½”] Moss st on rem 9 sts to be sewn across one half of back of neck.  Cast off.

RIGHT FRONT: 
Cast on 103 [111] sts. 

Work 8 rows Moss st. 

Dec 1 st at END of next row, then work 5 rows even.  14 rows in all. 

Proceed:  1ST ROW:  Moss 9.  Work 1st row of Lace patt on next 25 sts.  K to end of row [side edge].

2ND ROW:  P to last 9 sts.  Moss 9 [front edge].  Cont to correspond to Left Front, be careful to have all shapings for opposite side.

SLEEVES: 
Cast on 57 [61] sts. 

Work 28 rows Moss st.

NEXT ROW:  P 1.  * Inc 1 st in next st purlways, p 1.  Rep from * to end of row.  85 [91] sts on needle.  Proceed: 

1ST ROW:  K 30 [33].  Work 1st row of Lace patt on next 25 sts.  K to end of row. 

Working Lace patt in centre of sleeve & keeping rem sts in st st, inc 1 st each end of needle every 8th row to 115 [123] sts on needle. 

Cont even until sleeve meas approx 15” from beg, or desired length, end with 8th patt row.

TO SHAPE CAP: 
Keeping continuity of patt, cast off 4 sts, beg next 2 rows. 

Dec 1 st each end of needle on next & every other row to 35 sts on needle, end with p row.

NEXT ROW:  [3RD ROW OF LACE PATT]:  K 2 tog, k 11, k 2 tog, wl fwd, k 5, wl fwd, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 11, sl 1, k 1, psso. 

Keeping 9 sts in Lace patt, cont dec 1 st each end of needle every other row to 27 sts on needle, end with p row. 

Cont in st st, dec 1 st each end of needle on next 3 rows. 

P 1 row. 

Rep last 4 rows to 3 sts on needle, end with p row.  Cast off.

FINISHING: 
Sew side seams, easing in extra length allowed for fronts, 2” below armholes. 

Sew sleeve seams. 

Sew in sleeves. 

Sew cast-off sts of neckband tog & placing this seam at centre back of neck, sew in position. 

With double wool, crochet 2 chains, each about 12” long. 

Sew one to lower front corner of left front & other inside right side seam about 2” above lower edge. 

Cut ribbon in half & sew one piece to lower corner of right front & other to left outside side seam about 2” from lower edge.
