Vintage 1957 Elegant Bolero #468

Quick & easy to knit  this charming, bolero…stylish lines of design & pattern…sophisticated & smart, season-spanning, wardrobe favorite…perfect for any occasion!

SIZE: 

These directions are for size 12. 

Changes for sizes 14, 16 & 18 are in brackets.

MATERIALS: 

Bernat Opalspun 2 oz, 10 [11, 12, 13] skeins, Main Color [MC]

Bernat Cuddlespun 2 oz, 1 [1, 2, 2] skeins, Contrast Color [CC]

1 Pair #9 Straight Knitting Needles

#H Aluminum Crochet Hook

1 Buttons

GAUGE: 

4 sts = 1”;    

6 rows = 1”

BACK: 

Use MC, cast on 63 [66, 70, 74] sts. 

Work in stockinette st [st st], inc 1 st each end of needle every 6^th row 4 times. 

Work even on 70 [74, 78, 82] sts until piece meas 5 ½” [5 ½”, 6”, 6”.

SHAPE ARMHOLES: 

At beg of each of next 2 rows bind off 4 sts. 

Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 4 [4, 5, 5] times. 

Work even on 54 [58, 60, 64] sts until armholes meas 7 ½” [7 ¾”, 8”, 8 ¼”].

SHAPE SHOULDERS: 

At beg of each of next 4 rows bind off 6 [6, 7, 7] sts. 

At beg of each of next 2 rows bind off 5 [7, 6, 8] sts.  Bind off rem 20 sts. 

LEFT FRONT: 

Use MC, cast on 7 [9, 9, 11] sts. 

Work in st st, at front edge cast on 5 sts twice. 

Cont to cast on 5 sts at front edge once more, on next row inc 1 st at arm edge. 

Cont to inc 1 st at arm edge every 6^th row 3 times more, inc 1 st at front edge EVERY ROW 8 [8, 10, 10] times & every other row 6 times. 

Work even on 40 [42, 44, 46] sts until piece meas 5 ½” [5 ½”, 6”, 6”].

SHAPE ARMHOLE: 

At arm edge bind off 4 sts. 

Dec 1 st at same edge every other row 3 times. 

Work even 33 [35, 37, 39] sts for 2 rows. 

On next row at front  edge inc 1 st & rep this inc every 16^th row once more. 

Work even on 35 [37, 39, 41] sts until armhole meas 6 ½”[6 ¾”, 7”, 7 ¼”].

SHAPE NECK: 

At front edge bind off 11 [11, 12, 12] sts. 

Dec 1 st at neck edge EVERY ROW 5 times.

SHAPE SHOULDER: 

Cont to dec 1 st at neck edge EVERY ROW twice more, at arm edge bind off 6 [6, 7, 7] sts twice & 5 [7, 6, 8] sts once.

RIGHT FRONT: 

Work to corres to left front, reverse all shaping & forming first buttonhole when piece meas 3 ¼” [3 ¼”, 3 ½”, 3 ½”].

BUTTONHOLE: 

Start at front edge, k 3 sts, bind off next 4 sts, k to end of row. 

On next row, cast on 4 sts over those bound off prev row.

SLEEVES: 

Use MC, cast on 36 [36, 38, 38] sts. 

Work even in st st for 7 rows. 

On next row inc 1 st each end of needle & rep this inc every 8^th [8^th, 8^th, 6^th] row 7 [8, 8, 9] times more. 

Work even on 52 [54, 56, 58] sts until piece meas 13” [13”, 13 ½”, 13 ½”].

SHAPE CAP: 

At beg of each of next 2 rows bind off 4 sts. 

Dec 1 st each end of needle every 4^th row once & every other row 12 [13, 14, 15] times. 

At beg of each of next 6 rows bind off 2 sts.  Bind off rem sts.

LEFT FRONT FACING: 

Use MC, cast on 5 sts. 

Work in st st, at beg of next k row [front edge] inc 1 st & rep this inc EVERY ROW 7 [7, 9, 9] times more. 

Inc 1 st at same edge every other row 6 times & every 16^th row twice. 

Work even on 21 [21, 23, 23] sts until piece meas 11” [11 ¼”, 12”, 12 ¼”].

SHAPE NECK: 

At neck edge bind off 11 [11, 12, 12] sts. 

Dec 1 st at same edge EVERY ROW 7 times. 

Bind off rem 3 [3, 4, 4] sts.

RIGHT FRONT FACING: 

Work to corres to left front facing, reverse all shaping & forming first buttonhole in same manner as on right front when piece meas 2 ¼” [2 ¼”, 2 ½”, 2 ½”].

COLLAR: 

Use CC, cast on 66 [68, 70, 72] sts. 

K 1, p 1 in ribbing, inc 1 st each end of needle every 4^th row twice. 

Work even on 70 [72, 74, 76] sts until piece meas 2”.  Bind off.

CUFFS: 
Make 2. 

Use CC, cast on 40 [42, 44, 46] sts. 

K 1, p 1 in ribbing for 2 rows. 

DIVIDE WORK: 
Work 14 [15, 16, 17] sts; join another ball of yarn, work last 26 [27, 28, 29] sts. 

Work on both sides at once, inc 1 st at each inner edge every 4^th row twice. 

Work even until piece meas 2”.  Bind off. 

FINISHING: 

Sew underarm, shoulder, sleeve & cuff seams. 

Set in sleeves. 

Sew facing to front edge from lower edge to end of bound off sts at neck. 

Use MC, work 1 row sc along lower edge. 

Use CC, work 1 row sc along slits on cuffs & narrow ends of collar. 

Sew cuffs to sleeves. 

Sew cast on edge of collar to neck edge to within 2 ½” [2 ½”, 2 ¾”, 2 ¾”] of each front edge. 

Hem facing along collar & inner edge. 

Finish buttonhole. 

Sew on button. 

Steam seams lightly.
