Vintage Sophisticate Stripes Bolero #514

A clever woman quickly & very easily knits this charming bolero in a delightful striped [or solid!] pattern   a season-spanning, wardrobe favorite!

SIZES: 
Directions are for size 12. 
Changes for sizes 14, 16 & 18 are in brackets.

MATERIALS:
Nomotta Mothproof Pirouette 1 oz skeins: 
4 [5, 5, 6] Black [A]
3 [3, 3, 4] Blue [B]
3 [3, 3, 4] Green [C]
Pair #1 & #2 Knitting Needles
10 Buttons
1yd Grosgrain Ribbon 1” wide

GAUGE: 
8 sts = 1”;    
12 rows = 1”

COLOR PATTERN:
1ST ROW:  With A, k.                                    4TH ROW:  With A, p.
2ND ROW:  With B, p.                                   5TH ROW:  With B, k.
3RD ROW:  With C, k.                                   6TH ROW:  With C, p.
                        Repeat these 6 rows for pattern.

BACK: 
With #1 needles & A, cast on 120 [128, 136, 144] sts.  K 1, p 1 in ribbing for 12 rows. 

Change to #2 needles & work in color pattern, inc 1 st each side every 3rd row 10 times.

incs are always worked on same color row

Work straight on 140 [148, 156, 164] sts until back meas 3” [3”, 3 ½”, 3 ½”] above ribbing.

SLEEVES: 
Inc 1 st each side every other row 8 times. 

Cast on 5 sts at beg of next 18 rows & 11 sts at beg of next 2 rows. 

Work straight on 268 [276, 284, 292] sts until sleeve edges meas  about 5” [5”, 5 ½”, 5 ½”] above last cast-on sts, end with p row.

SHOULDERS: 
Bind off 9 [9, 8, 8] sts at beg of next 24 rows & 8 [6, 9, 10] sts at beg of next 2 [4, 6, 6] rows. 

Slip rem 36 [36, 38, 40] sts on holder for neck.

LEFT FRONT: 
With #1 needles & A, cast on 66 [70, 74, 78] sts.  K 1, p 1 in ribbing for 11 rows. 

On next row, work 9 sts & slip them on holder for front border--to be worked later, inc 5 sts evenly spaced to end of row; 62 [66, 70, 74] sts. 

Change to #2 needles & work in color pattern, inc 1 st at side edge every 3rd row 10 times. 

Work straight on 72 [76, 80, 84] sts until front meas 3” [3”, 3 ½”, 3 ½”] above ribbing, end with same color row as on back.

SLEEVE: 
Inc 1 st at side edge every other row 8 times. 

Cast on 5 sts at same edge 9 times & 11 sts once. 

Work straight on 136 [140, 144, 148] sts until sleeve edge meas 5” [5”, 5 ½”, 5 ½”] above last cast-on sts.

NECK & SHOULDER: 
Start at front edge, work 12 [12, 13, 14] sts & slip them on holder, work to end of row. 

Bind off 9 [9, 8, 8] sts at sleeve edge 12 times & 8 [6, 9, 10] sts 1 [2, 3, 3] times.

at same time dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 8 times.

RIGHT FRONT: 
Work to correspond to Left Front, reverse shaping.

FINISHING:  FRONT BORDERS: 
With #1 needles & A, work in ribbing on 9 sts of front border until border meas ½” less than front edge.  Slip sts on holder. 

Overcast border to front edge, stretching border slightly. 

Sew shoulder seam using running backstitch.

NECKBAND: 
With right side toward you, use #1 needles & A, pick up 113 [117, 121, 123] sts around neck including sts on  holders, k 1, p 1 in ribbing for 1”. 

Bind off in ribbing.

SLEEVEBANDS: 
With right side toward you, use #1 needles & A, pick up 68 [68, 74, 74] sts on sleeve edge.  K 1, p 1 in ribbing for 1”. 

Bind off in ribbing. 

Sew side seams, use overcast-stitch on ribbing. 

Face fronts with grosgrain ribbon. 

Sew 5 buttons to each front & make crocheted loops for frogs, or if buttons are used on left front only, make small flat loops with buttonhole twist on right front.
