Vintage Irish Crochet Pinwheel Cape Size 8-20 # 337

One size fits - 8 thru 20

This pattern contains directions for crocheting a Cape with pinwheel squares. 

The squares are worked & then joined to the yoke.

MATERIALS: 

8 - 2 oz balls of Sport Yarn

1 Crochet Hook #6/G [English #7]

1 Large Button

GAUGE: 

5 ch 2 groups with ch 1 bet each group = 3”

4 3-dc groups with ch 1 bet each group = 3”

Note:  Each square is a 7” square.

YOKE -

1^ST ROW:  Start at neck edge ch 72, this ch should meas 17 ½” without stretching, 1 dc in 4^th st from hook, * ch 1, sk next st of ch, 2 dc in next st of ch; rep from * across row.  There are 35 2-dc groups count ch 3 as 1 dc with ch 1 bet each group in last row. 

NOTE:  Ch 3 is always counted as 1 dc.

2^ND ROW:  Ch 3, sk 1^st st, 1 dc in next st, * ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-1 sp, sk next 2 dc group; rep from * across row, end with ch 1, 1 dc in last dc, 1 dc in top st of turn ch.  There are 36 2-dc groups in last row.

2^ND ROW:  With right side of last row facing, join yarn with sl st in 1^st sc, work sl st in each sc around collar; break off.

FINISHING: 

Sew a button onto left front neck edge opposite buttonhole.

FRINGE: 

Wind yarn over an 8 ½” piece of cardboard; cut one end thus make 17” strands. 

Take 6 strands - fold in half to form a lp; insert hook in 1^st ch lp at lower edge of square & draw lp of strands thru, draw loose ends through this lp & pull tightly to form a knot.
