Vintage Horizontal Cable Cape  #369

This is an elegant variation on the cape theme, with cables in the horizontal position. There is a long, Hip-Length version & a shorter, Waist-Length version, both attractive & suitable for many occasions. Both versions are very easy & quick to knit in a stockinette stitch with a crocheted edging as an added smart touch.

MATERIALS:
Knitting worsted 4 oz skeins: 
Long cape - 6 ½ skeins;   Short cape - 4 ½ skeins
1 Pair each # 10 ½ & #13 Knitting Needles [#0 & #2 English]
#9 Bone Crochet Hook
4 -1” Buttons for Long Cape                     
3 - 1” Buttons for Short Cape

GAUGE: 
With large needles, working in st st [ k 1 row, p 1 row]. 
3 sts = 1”;     4 rows = 1”

NOTE: 
The term “Pick Up A stitch from row below and Knit this picked-up stitch” = PUAK.

LONG CAPE: 
Using a double strand of yarn & large needles, cast on 70 sts.

1ST ROW:  K 2, p across to 2 end sts, k these 2 sts.

2ND ROW:  K 4, * pick up a st from row below & k this picked-up st [this will be referred to as PUAK], K next 6 sts; rep from * 9 more times, pick up a st, k 2, yo, k 2 tog, k 2 [81 sts on needle].

3RD & ALL ODD ROWS:  Same as 1st row.

4TH ROW:  Same as 1st row.

6TH ROW:  * K 9, puak; rep from * across row, end with k 9 [89 sts on needle].

8TH ROW:  K across row.

10TH ROW:  Same as 1st row.

12TH ROW:  * K 10, puak; rep from * across row, end with k 9 [97 sts on needle].

14TH ROW:  K across row.

16TH ROW:  K 10, * puak, k 11; rep from * across row, end with puak, k 10 [105 sts on needle].

18TH ROW:  K across row.

20TH ROW:  K 10, * puak, k 12; rep from * across row, end with puak, k 11 [113 sts on needle].

22ND ROW:  K across row.

24TH ROW:  K 11, * puak, k 13; rep from * across row, end with puak, k 7, yo, k 2 tog, k 2 [121 sts].

26TH ROW:  K 2, p across to 2 end sts, k these 2 sts.

28TH ROW:  K 12, * puak, k 14; rep from * across row, end with puak, k 11 [129 sts].

30TH ROW:  K across row.

32ND ROW:  K 2, p across to 2 end sts, k these 2 sts.

34TH ROW:  K 12, * puak, k 15; rep from * across row, end with puak, k 12 [137 sts].

36TH ROW:  K across row.

38TH ROW:  K 13, * puak, k 16; rep from * across row, end with puak, k 12 [145 sts].

40TH ROW:  K across row.

42ND ROW:  K 13, * puak, k 17; rep from * across row, end with puak, k 13 [153 sts].

44TH ROW:  K across row.

46TH ROW:  K 14, * puak, k 18; rep from * across row, end with puak, k 9, yo, k 2 tog, k 2 [161 sts].

48TH ROW:  K 2, p across to 2 end sts.  K these 2 sts.

50TH ROW:  K 14, * puak, k 19; rep from * across row, end with puak, k 14 [169 sts].

52ND ROW:  K across row.

54TH ROW:  K 2, p across to 2 end sts, k these 2 sts.

56TH ROW:  K 15, * puak, k 20; rep from * across row, end with puak, k 14 [177 sts].

58TH ROW:  K across row.

60TH ROW:  K 15, * puak, k 21; rep from * across row, end with puak, k 15 [185 sts].

62ND ROW:  K across row.

64TH ROW:  K 16, * puak, k 22; rep from * across row, end with puak, k 15 [193 sts].

66TH ROW:  K across row.

68TH ROW:  K 16, * puak, k 23; rep from across row, end with puak, k 12, yo, k 2 tog, k 2 [201 sts on needle].

70TH ROW:  K 2, p across to 2 end sts, k these 2 sts.

72ND ROW:  K across row.

74TH ROW:  K across row.

76TH ROW:  K 2, p across to 2 end sts, k these 2 sts.

78TH ROW:  K across row.

80TH ROW:  K across row.

82ND ROW:  K 2, p across to 2 end sts, k these 2 sts.  Bind off all sts.

NECKBAND: 
Using a double strand of yarn & small needles, & hold right side of work toward you, pick up 68 sts across cast-on sts at neck edge.

1ST ROW:  * K 1; hold yarn in front of needle, sl next st; rep from * across row. 

Rep 1st row 13 times.  Bind off tightly.

CABLE BANDS: 
Using a double strand of yarn & small needles, cast on 8 sts.

1ST ROW:  P 1, k 6, p 1.

2ND ROW:  P across row.

3RD & 4TH ROWS:  Rep 1st & 2nd rows.

5TH ROW:  P 1, sl next 3 sts onto cable needle, holding cable needle with 3 sl sts in front of work, k next 3 sts, k 3 sts from cable needle, p 1.

6TH ROW:  Same as 2nd row.

7TH & 8TH ROWS:  Rep 1st & 2nd rows once. 

Rep last 8 rows 19 times for first band [29 times for 2nd band; 39 times for 3rd band; 48 times for 4th & 5th bands].  Bind off.

JOINING OF BANDS: 
Pin bands bet purl stripes, be careful to place bands in correct position. 

Use a darning needle & a single strand of yarn, overcast edges of bands to purl sts of each stripe.

CROCHETED EDGING: 
Using crochet hook & double strand of yarn, hold right side of work toward you, join yarn with sc over end st of last row for Left Side of Neckband; place sts evenly apart, work 4 more sc over end sts of rem rows; work along edge of cape work [sk row, 1 sc over end st of next row] to bound-off sts, 3 sc in first bound-off st, 1 sc in each bound-off st at lower edge to last bound-off st, 3 sc in last st, work along other side of cape work [sk row, 1 sc over end st of next row] to neck edge; place sts evenly apart, work 5 sc along end sts of rows of neckband; break off.

FINISHING: 
Block. 

Sew buttons opposite buttonholes.

SHORT CAPE: 
Follow directions for Long Cape from beg to end of 54th row. 

Now follow directions for Long cape from 76th row to end of Neckband.

CABLE BANDS: 
Follow directions of Cable Bands for Long Cape from 1st row to end of 8th row.

Rep these 8 rows 19 times for 1st band [29 times for 2nd band; 39 times for 3rd & 4th bands].  Bind off.

JOINING OF BANDS: 
Same as for Long Cape.

CROCHETED EDGING: 
Same as for Long Cape.

FINISHING: 
Same as for Long Cape.
