Vintage Girl’s Coat, Hat & Bag #C106

Quick & easy to crochet this charming coat with it‘s matching hat & bag. Season-spanning & perfect for many occasions!

SIZE:  
Directions are for size 4. 
Larger sizes may be achieved by increasing size of hook & weight of yarn.

MATERIALS: 
American Thread Company Dawn Knitting Worsted:
16 – 1 ¼ oz Skeins Blue & 2 – 1 ¼ oz Skeins White
#3 & #4 Bone Crochet Hooks
4 Large & 4 Small Buttons for Coat
1 ½ yds. ⅝” Grosgrain Ribbon for Hat
4“ Zipper for Bag.

Gauge:  
7 patterns = 3”;    8 rows = 3”

COAT:
BACK YOKE:  With #4 hook, ch 59 & work 58 sc on ch (about 11”).

2nd Row:  1 Sc in each sc taking up back lp of st only.

3rd Row:  1 Sc in each sc taking up both lps of st.

Rep 2nd & 3rd rows for 15 more rows.

19th to 26th Row:  Dec 4 sc at end of each row for shoulder, break yarn.

With wrong side of work toward you attach yarn in 1st sc at lower edge of yoke * 2 s c in first sc, 1 sc in next sc, rep from * across row end with 2 sc in last sc.

2nd Row:  Beg star st patt. Ch 3, insert needle in 2nd st of ch, pull thru, insert needle in next st of ch, pull thru, insert needle in 1st sc (take up back lp of st only for entire row) & pull thru, insert needle in next sc, pull thru, yo & pull thru all sts on needle. * ch 1, (Ch 1 is referred to as eye of star st ) insert needle in eye of st, pull thru, insert in 1 thread of side of star, pull thru, insert in next sc, pull thru, insert in next sc, pull thru, yo & pull thru all lps on needle, rep from * across row.

3rd Row:  For rem of back take up both lps of st.  Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st eye of st, 1 sc in lp of st, then 1 sc in each eye & lp across row end with 2 sc in last lp of star st.

4th Row:  Work patt even & work 1 row of sc even.

6th Row:  Work patt across row, ch 3, turn.

7th Row:  2 Sc on ch & cont sc to end of row, ch 5, turn.

8th Row:  1 Patt on ch & cont patt to end of row work 1 patt on last 2 sc.

Cont two rows of patt for 35 more rows or until length desired, allow for ¾” border of sc.

LEFT FRONT:  
Ch 27 & work 26 sc on ch.

2nd Row:  1 Sc in each sc, work into back lp of st & dec 2 sc at neck.

3rd, 5th & 7th Rows:  Dec one st at beg of row, work 1 sc in each st taking up both lps of st.

4th Row:  Same as 2nd row.

6th Row:  Work even in sc taking up back lp of st.

8th, 10th, 12th Rows:  Sl st back 4 sts for shoulder, 1 sc in each sc.

9th Row:  Dec 1 st at neck & drop last 4 sc at shoulder.

11th Row:  Work even.

13th Row:  2 Sc, break yarn.

With wrong side of work toward you join yarn at lower edge of yoke & work * 1 sc in first sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * across row.

2nd to 9th Rows:  Work even.

10th Row:  Work patt to end of row, ch 7 for underarm, turn.

11th Row:  6 Sc on ch & work sc in each sc.

Rep two rows of patt for 36 more rows.

RIGHT YOKE:  
Ch 27, work 26 sc on ch & break yarn.

2nd Row:  Join yarn opposite end in 3rd back lp of 3rd st, 1 sc in each rem sc.

3rd Row:  Taking up both lps of st, 1 sc in each sc dec 2 sts at end of row for neck.

4th & 6th Rows:  Dec 1 st at beg of row, 1 sc in each sc working into back lp of st.

5th & 7th Rows:  Dec 1 sc at end of row.

8th Row:  Work even.

9th Row:  Sl st back 4 sc for shoulder & dec 1 sc at end of row.

10th Row:  Drop last 4 sc & work 1 row even.

12th Row:  Same as 10th Row.

13th Row:  Same as 9th row, break yarn.

With wrong side toward you join yarn at lower edge of yoke & work * 2 sc in 1st sc & 1 sc in next sc, rep from * across row.

2nd Row:  Work patt across row.

3rd to 10th Row:  Work even.

11th Row:  Sc in each sc, ch 9, turn.

12th Row:  Work 3 patt on ch 9 & cont patt across row.

13th Row:  Cont 2 rows of patt for 35 more rows.

SLEEVE:  

Ch 43, work 42 sc on ch.

2nd Row:  Star st across row & work 4 more rows even.

7th Row:  2 Sc in first & last sc, 1 sc in each rem sc & work 5 rows even.

13th Row:  Same as 7th row & work 5 rows even.

19th Row:  Same as 7th row & work 5 rows even.

25th Row:  Same as 7th row & work 2 rows even.

28th, 30th, 32nd Rows:  Sl st back 2 sc & drop last 2 sc.

29th, 31st, 33rd, 35th, 37th, 38th Rows:  Work even.

34th & 36th Rows:  Sl st back 1 sc & drop last sc.

39th Row:  Sc in both eye & lp of first patt , next 2 patt sc in lps only, next 2 patt , sc in both eye & lp, next 2 patt sc in lps only, next 3 patt , sc in eye & lp, next 2 patt lps only, next 2 patt eye & lp, next 2 patt , lps only, last patt  eye & lp.

40th & 42nd Rows:  Work even.

41st Row:  Sc in eye & lp of first patt , next 2 patt sc in lps only, next patt , eye & lp, next 2 patt, lps only, next patt eye & lp, next 2 patt, lps only, next patt eye & lp, next 2 patt, lps only, last patt, eye & lp.

43rd Row:  Sc across row working into lps only.

44th Row:  Sl st back 1 sc & work 3 patt, break yarn.  

Work other sleeve to correspond & sew up sleeve seams.

CUFFS:  
Ch 51, work row of sc, 3 sc in end ch & work sc on other side of ch with 3 sc in end ch.

Work 2 more rows of sc working 3 sc in center of each end. 

Sew cuffs on sleeve & trim with buttons as illustrated.

Sew underarm seams matching rows. 

Sew shoulder seams. 

Join yarn at lower edge of left front yoke & work 1 sc in sc, 2 sc in first patt of coat front, 1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next patt, & cont down front, 2 sc in corner, 1 sc in each sc across lower edge of coat, 2 sc in corner & work right front to correspond, break yarn.

2nd Row:  Join in 1st sc on left front, 1 sc in each sc to corner, taking up back lp of st, 2 sc in corner, sc in each sc across lower edge taking up both lps, 2 sc in corner & work other side to correspond.

3rd Row:  Work down right front to corner, ch 1, turn.

4th Row:  1 Sc in each of first 30 sc, ch 4, sk 4 sc, sc in next sc (buttonhole) * 1 sc in each of next 7 sc, rep buttonhole, & rep from * to neck, ch 1, turn.

5th Row:  1 Sc in each sc all around coat working 1 sc in each ch of buttonholes & 2 sc in each corner.

6th & 7th Row:  Work across front only, break yarn.

8th Row:  Attach yarn at lower edge of right front & work to neck, ch 1, turn & work row all around coat, do not break yarn.

COLLAR:  
Work row of sc drawing neck in to 15”, ch 1, turn & work 1 row of sc, 1 row of patt , 1 row of sc, 1 row of patt .

Bind seams to prevent stretching.

HAT:  
With #4 hook & White yarn ch 19 & work 18 sc on ch. (about 3 ¼“).

2nd & 4th Rows:  Work patt same as coat.

3rd Row:  Sc even.

5th Row:  Sk eye of patt work across row, sl st in last st, ch 3, turn.

6th, 8th Rows:  Work patt.

7th Row:  Same as 5th row.

9th to 18th Row:  Rep 5th & 6th row.  There should be 2 patt left.

19th Row:  Ch 1, turn, insert needle in lp, pull thru, insert needle in next lp, pull thru, yo & pull thru all lps on needle, break yarn & work 2 more white sections & 3 blue sections. 

Sew sections together, alternating colors.

BRIM:  
With wrong side of hat towards you attach White & with #3 hook work in sc very firmly.

1st Row:  Inc 2 sc in each section.

2nd Row:  Inc in every 5th sc & work 3 rows even.

6th Row:  Inc in every 12th sc & work 3 rows even.

10th Row:  Same as 6th row & work 2 rows even. 

Finish Brim with row of patt. 

Trim hat with ribbon.

BAG:  
With white & #4 needle ch 27 & work 26 sc on ch (4 ½”).

2nd Row:  Join Blue & work row of sc, carry White under sts.

3rd Row:  With White work row of patt carry Blue under sts.

4th Row:  Same as 2nd Row.

5th Row:  Same as 3rd Row.

6th Row:  With Blue work 3 sc in one patt, 2 sc in next patt, rep across row, break Blue yarn & cont with White, work 5 rows even.

12th Row:  1 Sc in eye of patt, 2 sc in lp, work even across row working 2 sc in eye & 1 sc in lp of last patt, work 2 rows even, break yarn & work another section.

Crochet two sections tog in patt st inc 1 patt at corners & leaving first 3 rows free. 

Work row of sc around top of bag.

HANDLE:  
With Blue, ch 3, join & work 1 sc in each st, cont rows of sc until handle meas about 7 ½”.

Sew handle in position & finish bag with Zipper.
