1941 Girl’s Fitted Coat & Hat  #C107


Quick & easy to crochet this charming coat with it‘s matching hat. Season-spanning & perfect for many occasions!

SIZE: 
Directions are for size 8 - 10 yrs. 
Larger sizes may be achieved by increasing size of hook & weight of yarn.

MATERIALS: 
Knitting Worsted:  Coat 5 - 4 oz skeins;  Hat 2 oz
#4 or #5 Afghan Crochet Hook - 14”
6 Buttons
Grosgrain Ribbon

Gauge: 
5 sts = 1”;   
4 rows = 1”

COAT:  BACK: 
Ch 102 [to meas 23”] for bottom of coat, [108 for size 10].

1ST ROW:  Sk 1 ch, * draw up lp in next ch; rep from * across foundation ch [102 lps on hook].  Wrap, draw thru 1 lp, * wrap, draw thru 2 lps; rep from * across row. 

2ND ROW:  * Bring yarn to front of work, insert hook under vertical lp, hold yarn with left thumb on right side of work, draw up lp; rep from * across row [102 lps]. 

Always wrap & take off lps same as first row to complete row.

Rep 2nd row for border until meas 1”. 

Rem of back is worked in plain afghan st.

1ST ROW:  Insert needle in 2nd vertical lp, draw up all vertical lps across row.

2ND ROW:  Wrap, draw thru 1 lp, * wrap, draw thru 2 lps; rep from * across row.

Rep these 2 rows for 2”.

1ST DEC ROW:  Draw 1 lp thru first 2 vertical lps [a dec].  Draw up 30 lps, make another dec in same manner, draw up 33 lps, make dec, draw up 30 lps, dec last 2 lps.  [98 lps]. 

*  Work 1” even.  Dec 4 more lps in same manner with decs directly above those on prev decs.  Rep from * 8 more times [62 sts, 12”].

Work 4” even [5” size 10]. 

Now inc 1 st at beg & end of next row as follows:  * yo hook [inc] work across row to within last lp, yo hook [inc] pick up last st. 

Work 1” even, rep from * 2 more times.

Work 1” even [20”, 68 sts], or desired length to underarm. 

SHAPE ARMHOLE: 
Sl st over 4 lps for underarm.  Work across row to within 4 lps. 

Now dec 1 st at beg & end of each row, 3 times [54 sts].

Work even until armhole meas 6” [meas straight up from 4 sl sts.]

* Sl st over 4 sts, work across row to within 4 lps, rep from * 3 more times.  Sl st rem 22 sts for back of neck.

FRONT: 
Ch 50 to meas 11” [ch 53, size 10]. 

Work 1” of  border same as Back.

Work in plain afghan st for 2”.

1ST DEC ROW:  Make dec, draw up 24 lps, make another dec, draw up 21 lps. 

Work 1” even.

Dec 2 sts every inch 9 more times [30 sts, 12”]. 

Work 4” even.

1ST INC ROW:  Now inc 1 st at seam end every inch, 3 times. 

Work 2” even, or desired length to underarm.

SHAPE ARMHOLE: 
Sl st over 4 lps, work across row, work back. 

Dec same as for Back until you have 9 sts off altogether. 

Work 4” even from armhole.

Pick up 10 lps make dec [pick up 2 lps tog], pick up 12 lps, work back. 

Work 3 rows even, pick up 9 lps, make dec, pick up 9 lps, sk last lp for neck edge.

Cont to sk last st at neck edge every row, until 19 lps rem. 

Sl over 4 sts at beg of next 4 rows for shoulder, & cont to sl last st at neck edge, sl st over last 4 sts. 

Work other side to correspond.

SLEEVES: 
Ch 42 to meas 6 ½” [ch 38, size 10]. 

Work border for 1”.

Work in plain afghan st for 2”. 

Inc 1 st at each end every inch until Sleeve meas 11”, 52 sts. 

Work 1” even or desired length to underarm.

Sl st over 3 lps, work across row to within 3 lps, work back.

Sl st over 2 lps, work across row to within 2 lps, work back.

*  Work 1 row even. 

Sl st over 1 lp, work row to within 1 lp, work back, rep from * until 22 lps rem, bind off.

FRONT BANDS:  LEFT FRONT: 
Start at neck edge [work border same as border on bottom], * pick up 10 sts [1 st in each row] now inc 1 st by picking up 1 st bet next row, rep from * for [112 sts] or complete length of coat, for 5 rows.

FRONT BANDS:  Right Front: 
Start at bottom, work 2 rows even, make buttonholes on next row as follows:  pick up 56 lps, * sl st over 2 lps, pick up 8 lps, rep from * to end of row.

Work back ch 2 over those bound off.

Work 2 more rows.

Sl sts off on 5th row.

COLLAR: 
Ch 49, work in afghan st always work first & last 3 sts in border st same as bottom of coat.

On next row, pick up 3 lps * inc, pick up 7 lps, rep from * 5 more times, inc, pick up last 3 lps.

Cont to inc inside of borders every row & above prev incs every other row, thru-out Collar, until you have 10 rows.

Work 3 rows even in border st, bind off on 3rd row.

Sc up front of Collar.

FINISHING: 
Sew up seams at underarm & Sleeve seams. 

Sew shoulder seams & insert Sleeves into armholes, making 2 small pleats on top of Sleeve. 

Sew on Collar, starting after border & ending before border. 

Sew on buttons.

HAT:  BACK PIECE: 
Ch 26.

1ST ROW:  Sk 1 ch, * draw up lp in next ch; rep from * across foundation ch [26 lps on hook].  Wrap, draw thru 1 lp, * wrap, draw thru 2 lps; rep from * across row.  This completes 1st row. 

Work 2 more rows in same manner.

4TH ROW:  Make dec as follows:  draw 1 lp thru first 2 vertical lps [a dec], draw up each lp across row, dec last 2 lps. 

Rep these 4 rows 5 more times [14 lps on needle].

Work 4 more rows, dec 1 st at beg & end of every row.

* Pick up 1 lp, sl st, rep from * until all lps are off.  Break thread, ch 10, draw up lp in each ch [10 lps on hook].  Complete row.

Work 2 more rows.

Inc 1 st at beg of next row as follows :  yo hook [an inc], pick up each lp across row to within last lp, wrap [inc], pick up last lp. 

Rep these 4 rows, until you have 26 lps. 

Work even on 26 lps until piece meas 12”. 

Now dec 1 lp on each end.

Cont to dec 1 lp on each end every 4th row, until you have 10 lps. 

Work 3 rows even.

FINISHING: 
Sew these ends tog. 

Fold Back Piece in half, mark center of wide end. 

Fold long piece in half, mark center. 

Have markers meet & sew tog. 

Tack grosgrain ribbon around to fit head size & make small tailored bow with 2” streamers.
