Vintage Formal Mohair Shrug Cape Stole #330

Size 14 - 16

Materials: 
Fleisher’s or Bear Brand Supra Mohair, 10 balls
1 Pair #13 Knitting Needles          
#3 Steel Crochet Hook
1 Ring, inside diameter 1 ¼”
1 Ring, inside diameter ¾” diameter

Gauge: 
5 sts = 2”;    
7 rows = 2”

Entire garment is worked with 2 strands of yarn.

CAPE:
Cast on 11 sts for right front border.

Work Stockinette st - p 1 row, k 1 row - for 18 rows, end with a k row worked on right side at inner edge of border.

Cast on 36 sts on to same needle with the 11 sts for front edge of shrug.  47 sts.

Pattern: 
1st row:  wrong side: 
P 11, * k 1, p 11, rep from * to end.

2nd row:  K 11, * p 1, k 11, rep from * to end.

3rd row:  Same as 1st row.

4th row:  Same as 2nd row.

Short rows: 
5th row: 
P 11, k 1, p 11, k 1, p 11.  Turn.

6th row:  Sl 1 st as to k, k 10, p 1, k 11, p 1, k 11.

7th row:  P 11, k 1, p 11.  Turn.

8th row:  Sl 1 st as to k, k 10, p 1, k 11.

These 8 rows are rep for pat of entire garment; having 4 sections of st st separated by a rib st.

Rep these 8 rows of pat twice more. 

Rep 1st & 2nd rows again, end at lower edge of shrug. 

Place marker in 2nd st st section above lover edge for end of right front.

Underarm part of Waistband: 
P 11, place rem 36 sts on holder. 

Turn, k 11, work 5 rows more on the 11 sts, end with p row.  Place these 11 sts of waistband on holder.  Break yarn.

Right Sleeve: 
Cast on 11 sts for underarm part. 

P 1 row, k 1 row for 7 rows, end with p row. 

Beg at top edge of shrug, with free needle, take up 36 sts from holder & work these sts to same needle with the 11 sts, working as for pat 3rd row.  47 sts.

Continue pat until 56 rows from marker for end of right front end with pat 2nd row at lower edge of sleeve. 

Always count rows in the 2nd section of st st above lower edge. 

Place marker in 2nd section above lower edge for end of right sleeve.

Back: 
Bind off 10 sts, loosen loop on needle & draw ball of yarn thru it, thus binding off 11th st, finish row as for pat 3rd row.

Next row:  Work 36 sts, beg at lower edge of waistband, with free needle, take up 11 sts of waistband & k these sts with needle having 36 sts.  47 sts.

Cont pat until 55 rows from marker for end of sleeve, end with pat 1st row at top edge.

Next row:  Work 36 sts & place rem 11 sts on holder for waistband. 

Mark in 2nd section above lower edge for end of back.

Left sleeve: 
Cast on 11 sts on to same needle with the 36 sts.  47 sts. 

Work next row as for pat 3rd row. 

Cont pat until 56 rows from marker for end of back, end with pat 2nd row at lower edge. 

Mark in 2nd section above lower edge for end of left sleeve.


Underarm part of left sleeve: 
Next row: 
P 11, place rem 36 sts on holder. 

Work 6 rows more on the 11 sts, end with p row.  Bind off 11 sts.  Break yarn.

Underarm part of Waistband: 
Beg at lower edge of waistband, take up 11 sts from holder. 

Join yarn & k 1 row, p 1 row for 8 rows, end with p row.

Left Front: 
Beg at top edge of shrug, with free needle, take up 36 sts from holder & work these sts as for pat 3rd row with needle having the 11 sts.  47 sts. 

Continue pat until rows from marker for end of left sleeve, end with pat 4th row at lower edge. 

Bind off 36 sts in pat for front edge, work to end. 

Work in st st on rem 11 sts for front border for 17 rows more, end with k row.  Bind off as to p.

Finishing: 
Using a weaving st sew 11 sts at end of front border to 11 sts at end of waistband. 

Run yarn along the 25 sts of front edge & gather in to 5”. 

Sew inner edge of left front border to gathered front edge. 

Sew 14 rows at center of outer edge of border to this seam. 

Sew right front border in same way, leaving an opening of 2 ¼” at center for buttonholes. 

Finish buttonhole in blanket st, working thru both edges of border. 

Sew underarm edges of sleeves tog. 

Sew underarm part of sleeves to waistband.

Buttons: 
With 2 strands of yarn, work 24 sc over small ring.  Join with sl st to 1st sc.  Fasten off, leaving 16” end. 

Thread yarn in tapestry needle & draw thru top loop of each sc, gathering up tightly.  Fasten securely, leaving end for sewing. 

Work 40 sc over large ring & finish in same way. 

Sew small ring to center of large ring, sewing just inside small ring. 

Sew button at center of left front edge at seam.
