Vintage Formal Angora Knit Cape Stole #329

Materials: 
Fleisher’s
OR
Bucilla Imported French angora, 14 balls
1 Pair #10 Knitting Needles          
#3 Steel Crochet Hook
1 Ring, inside diameter 1 ¼”
1 Ring, inside diameter ¾” diameter

Gauge: 
4 sts = 1”;    
11 rows = 2”

Stole:
Cast on 9 sts for left front edge.

Left Front Shaping: 
1st row:  P all sts.

2nd row:  1st inc row:  K, inc 1 st in each of 8 sts, k last st.  17 sts.

3rd row:  P all sts.

4th row:  2nd inc row:  K, inc 1 st in each of 16 sts, k last st. 33 sts.

5th row:  P, inc 1 st in last st.

6th row:  Inc 1 st in 1st st, k to end.

7th & 8th rows:  Same as 5th & 6th rows.

9th row:  Same as 5th row.  38 sts.

10th row:  Final inc row:  K, inc 1 st in each of 37 sts, k last st.  75 sts.

Rib Pattern: 
Wrong Side:  P 9, * k 2, p 9, rep from * to end of row.  Mark end of row for lower edge of cape & beg of short rows.

** Short Rows: 
1st row:  Right Side:  Beg at lower edge of cape, k 9, p 2; turn.

2nd row:  Sl 1 st, k1, p 9.

3rd row:  K 9, p 1, p next [slipped] st tog, with st directly below, k 9, p 2; turn.

4th row:  Sl 1 st, k 1, p 9, k 2, p 9.
Note:  To avoid holes when working over sl st, always p this st tog with st directly below.

5th row:  K 9, p 2, k 9, p 2, working sl st as before, k 9, p 2; turn.

6th row:  Sl 1 st, k 1, p 9, * k 2, p 9, rep from * to end.

7th row:  * K 9, p 2, rep from * twice more working sl st as before, k 9, p 2, turn.

8th row:  Sl 1 st, k 1, p 9, * k 2, p 9, rep from * to end.

9th row:  * K 9, p 2; rep from * 3 times more working sl st as before, k 9, p 2, turn.

10th row:  Sl 1 st, k 1, p 9, * k 2, p 9, rep from * to end.

11th row:  * K 9, p 2, rep from * 4 times more working sl st as before, k 9, p 2, turn.

12th row:  Sl 1 st, k 1, p 9, * k 2, p 9, rep from * to end.

13th row:  K 9, * p 2, k 9, rep from * to end.

14th row:  P 9, * k 2, p 9, rep from * to end.  75 sts.

Rep last 2 rows 3 times more, end at lower edge.

Rep from ** 11 times more, then rep from ** up to & including row 14, end on wrong side at lower edge with 2nd row after 13th st of short rows.

Right Front Shaping: 
1st row:  1st dec row:  K 2 tog, 37, k 1.  38 sts.

2nd row:  P dec, 1 st at end.

3rd row:  Buttonhole row:  K 2 tog, k 15, bind off next 4 sts for buttonhole, k to end.

4th row:  P 16, cast on 4 sts over buttonhole, p 14, p 2 tog.

5th row:  K 2 tog, k to end.

6th row:  P, dec 1 st at end.

7th row:  Dec row:  K 2 tog, 16 times, k 1.  17 sts.

8th row:  P.

9th row:  Final dec row:  K 2 tog, 8 times, k 1.  Bind off 9 sts.

Finishing: 
Thread strand of Angora in tapestry needle & using small running sts, gather 9 cast-on sts at left front edge & draw up tightly.  Fasten securely. 

Gather bound-off sts at right front edge in same way.

Button: 
1st row:  Right side:  Make a loop on hook, work 30 sc over smaller ring, join with sl st in 1st sc; fasten off, leaving 16” end. 

Thread end into tapestry needle & from wrong side, draw through back loop of each sc & gather up tightly. 

Fasten securely leaving end for sewing. 

Work 50 sc over larger ring, join with sl st in 1st sc, ch 1, do not turn. 

Work 1 sc in every 2nd sc around; 25 sc, join with sl st.  Break yarn, leaving 16” end. 

Thread yarn in tapestry needle & from wrong side draw thru back loop of each sc & gather up firmly.  Fasten securely. 

Sew small ring to center of large ring, sewing just inside small ring. 

Sew button on left front edge opposite buttonhole, as shown in photo.
