Vintage Angora Knit Cape Stole # 331

A clever needle worker will quickly work up this stole into a classic, season-spanning wardrobe favorite to keep or present as a welcome gift!


Materials: 
Bucilla or Fleisher’s Imported French Angora, 16 balls.
1 Pair #8 Knitting Needles

Gauge: 
5 sts = 1”

Measurements: 
Width from lower edge to back of neck 15”

STOLE:
Cast on 3 sts for beg of 1st tie. 

Work Stockinette st [st st] - p 1 row, k 1 row - inc 1 st each side of every k row until there are 33 sts. 

Continue even in st st until 10” from beg, measured at center of work, end with p row.

Dec row:  K 2 tog, 16 times, k 1; 17 sts. 

Work 2” even, end with p row.

Inc row:  K, inc 1 st in each st 16 times, k 1; 33 sts. 

P 1 row, inc 1 st at end of row; 34 sts.  Mark end of row for lower edge of cape. 

Rep inc at lower edge every row 4 times more; 38 sts.

Next row:  K, inc 1 st in each 37 sts, k 1; 75 sts.

Rib pattern:  From wrong side, p 9, * k 2, p 9; rep from * to end.

** 1st short row:  Beg at lower edge of cape, k 9, p 2, turn.

2nd row:  Sl 1 st, k 1, p 9.

3rd row:  K 9, p 1, p next [slipped] st tog with st directly below, k 9, p 2, turn.

4th row:  Sl 1 st, k 1, p 9, k 2, p 9.

Note:  To avoid holes when working over sl st, always p this st tog with st directly below.

5th row:  * K 9, p 2; rep from * twice working sl st as before, turn.

6th row:  Sl 1 st, k 1, p 9, k 2, p 9, k 2, p 9.

Continue to work 9 k sts & 2 p sts more in each of next 3 rows worked from lower edge; 12 short rows in all. 

Work all sts in rib pat in next row worked from same side. 

Work 7 rows more in rib pat on all 75 sts, end at lower edge. 

Rep from ** 15 times more, working 2 rows only after last short row, end at lower edge.

Next row:  right side:  K 2 tog 37 times, k 1; 38 sts, turn.  P, dec 1 st at end of row. 

Cont in st st, rep dec at lower edge of cape every row 4 times more; 33 sts.

Dec row:  K 2 tog 16 times, k 1; 17 sts. 

Work even in st st for 2” end with p row.

Inc row:  K, inc 1 st in every st 16 times, k 1; 33 sts. 

Work even in st st until 2nd tie is same length as 1st tie to beg of shaping of point. 

Dec 1 st each side of every k row until 3 sts remain.  Bind off.
