 Vintage Crocheted Shell & Pineapple Cape #373

This is an elegant variation on the cape theme in a delightful openwork combination of shell stitch & pineapple design; with a shell stitch collar.  Attractive & suitable for many occasions, it can be made up very quickly.

SIZES: 
Directions are for sizes Small, Medium & Large.  

Changes for sizes Medium & Large will be shown in brackets.

MATERIALS: 
4 [5, 5] Fingering Yarn, 3 Ply, 2 oz balls;  or
4 [5, 5] Mercerized Cotton, 250 yd balls
#5 Steel Crochet Hook

GAUGE:   
8 dc = 1”;    
3 dc rows = 1”

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:
Neck to hem:  14” [15”, 16“]
Width of hem:  60” [64”, 64“ 68“]

2ND ROW:  Ch 3, turn, work [1 dc, ch 2, & 2 dc] in first dc on last row [this will inc shell at beg of row], sk dc, shell of [2 dc, ch 2 & 2 dc] in [ch 2] lp of same shell, * shell of [2 dc, ch 2 & 2 dc] in [ch 2] lp of next shell; rep from * across, end with sk next dc on end shell, shell in top st of turning ch of last row:  18 shells on row.

3RD ROW:  Same as last row:  20 shells in row.

SECOND & ALL OTHER SCALLOPS:  Turn, sk next 4 dc on 17th row, join yarn with sl st in next shell; cont to work as for 1st Scallop.

EDGING: 
1ST ROW:  Working along end of rows, sk all shell st rows, join yarn with sl st over end of 1st row of pineapple design, placing sts over either end dc of end ch of rows work [ch 5 & 1 sc] over each of rem rows to tip of scallop, * ch 5, 1 sc over opposite end of same top row, [ch 5 & 1 sc] over opposite end of each of next 5 short rows, ch 2, 1 dc in joining sl st bet shells on 17th row, ch 2, 1 sc over 1st short row on next scallop, [ch 5 & 1 sc] over each of next 5 short rows; rep from * across scallops, work [ch 5 & 1 sc] over each row along side edge of cape, ending at opposite end of same row as starting sl st.

2ND ROW:  Ch 5, turn, 1 sc in first [ch 5] lp on last row, * [ch 5 & 1 sc] in each ch lp to [ch 2] sps bet scallops, work 1 sc in each of next 2 [ch 2] sps, 1 sc in next [ch 5] lp; rep from * across end with [ch 5 & 1 sc] in each rem ch lp; break off. 

COLLAR:  1ST HALF: 
1ST ROW:  Ch 4, 1 dc in 4th st from hk, ch 2, 2 more dc in same st as last dc.

2ND ROW:  Ch 3, turn, work [1 dc, ch 2 & 2 dc] in first dc on last row, sk next 2 dc, [2 dc, ch 2 & 2 dc] in top st of turning ch.

3RD ROW:  Ch 1, turn, work shell in first shell as follows: sl st in each of first 2 dc, sl st in [ch 2] lp, ch 3, [1 dc, ch 2 & 2 dc] in same ch lp as last st st, work shell of [2 dc, ch 2 & 2 dc] in [ch 2] lp of next shell.

4TH ROW:  Ch 1, turn, [always working first shell as for last row] a shell in first shell, shell in sp bet shells, shell in [ch 2] lp of next shell.

5TH ROW:  Ch 1, turn, shell in first shell, shell in each of rem 2 shells.

6TH ROW:  Ch 1, turn, shell in first shell, shell in first dc of next shell, sk 3 dc, shell in next dc, shell in [ch 2] lp of end shell.

7TH ROW:  Ch 1, turn shell in first shell, shell in each of next 3 shells.

8TH ROW:  CH 1, turn, shell in first shell, shell in next shell, sk next dc on same shell, shell in next dc, shell in each of 2 shells.

9TH ROW:  Ch 1, turn, shell in first shell, shell in each of rem 4 shells.

Rep last row 18 [20, 22] more times; break off.

Make other half of Collar in same way. 

Using darning needle & same material, overcast last row of first half to last row of other half.

FINISHING: 
Fold Collar in half lengthwise. 

Having joining of two halves at center of neck edge of cape, arrange Collar around neckline & down front edges along shell st rows [up to beg of edging] easing in edge of cape to fit. 

Front right side, overcast double edge of Collar to edge of cape.

CORD: 
Using 3 strands of yarn held tog, make ch same length as collar, sl st in 2nd st from hk, sl st in each of rem sts of ch; fasten off.

Sew this cord over joining on right side, under Collar.  This will hold Collar up. 

Fold back collar around neckline.
