Vintage Classique Cape Jacket #368

This is an elegant variation on the cape theme, being a jacket with cape-like sleeves…very easy & quick to knit.

SIZES: 
Directions to fit bust 32” to 34”, with changes for sizes 36” to 38” in brackets.

MATERIALS: 
Paton’s Beehive Molana 1 oz balls, 10 [11]
1 Pair #4 Knitting Needles
2 Buttons

GAUGE:  
7 ½” sts & 10 rows = 2”

Be sure to knit to this tension, so that your cape will be at least 16 ½” at centre back [excluding neckband].

LEFT FRONT: 
Cast on 33 [37] sts.

1ST ROW:  K 1, * p 1, k 1.  Rep from * to end of row. 

Rep this row for Moss st for 7 rows in all.

8TH ROW:  K to last 4 sts.  [P 1, k 1] twice.

9TH ROW:  K 1, [p 1, k 1] twice.  P to end of row:  [side edge]. 

Rep 8th & 9th rows 7 times more.   [23 rows in all from cast-on edge.]

NEXT ROW:  K 1, k 2 tog for side dec.  K to last 6 sts, k 2 tog for dec inside moss st border, [p 1, k 1] twice.

Rep this dec row every 6th row to 17 [25] sts on needle, then every 4th row to 13 [15] sts.

Work 2 rows even, ending at front edge.

NEXT ROW:  [K 1, p 1] twice, k 1, * p 2 tog.  Rep from * to end of row.

NEXT ROW:  Cast off 4 [5] sts.  Moss to end of row. 

Working on rem 5 sts work 6”. 

Moss st to be sewn across one half of back of neck.  Cast off.

RIGHT FRONT: 
Cast on 33 [37] sts. 

Work 7 rows moss st.

8TH ROW:  K 1, [p 2 tog, wrn for buttonhole], p 1.  K to end of row:  [side edge].

9TH ROW:  P to last 5 sts, [k 1, p 1] twice, k 1.

Working 2nd buttonhole in moss st border on following 7th row, cont even until 23 rows in all have been worked from cast-on edge.

NEXT ROW:  [K 1, p 1] twice, k 2 tog, for dec inside moss st border.  K to last 3 sts, sl 1, k 1, psso for side dec, k 1.  Dec in this manner, cont as given for Left Front to 13 [15] sts on needle.

Work 3 rows even, ending at front edge.

NEXT ROW:  [K 1, p 1] twice, k 1, * k 2 tog.  Rep from * to end of row.

NEXT ROW:  Cast off 4 [5] sts, moss to end of row. 

Working on rem 5 sts work 6”. 

Moss st to be sewn across one half of back of neck.  Cast off.

BACK & SLEEVES: 
Cast on 67 [71] sts & work 7 rows moss st then 10 rows st st for Left Sleeve. 

Break yarn & leave these sts on spare needle.

Cast on 49 [55] sts & work 7 rows moss st then 10 rows st st for Back. 

Break yarn & leave these sts on spare needle.

Cast on 67 [71] sts & work 7 rows moss st then 10 rows st st for Right sleeve.

NEXT ROW:  K across sts of Right Sleeve, Back & Left Sleeve:  183 [197] sts on needle.

Beg with p row, work 5 rows st st, end with p row:  [23 rows in all from each cast-on edge.]

NEXT ROW:  K 1, * k 2 tog, k 9, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1.  Rep from * to end of row. 

Work 15 rows even.

NEXT ROW:  K 1, * k 2 tog, k 7, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1.  Rep from * to end of row. 

Work 13 rows even.

NEXT ROW:  K 1, * k 2 tog, k 5, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1.  Rep from * to end of row. 

Work 11 rows even.

NEXT ROW:  K 1, * k 2 tog, k 3, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1.  Rep from * to end of row. 

Work 9 rows even.

NEXT ROW:  K 1, * k 2 tog, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1.  Rep from * to end of row:  53 [57] sts on needle. 

Work 3 rows even.

NEXT ROW:  * K 1, k 2 tog.  Rep from * across row. 

P 1 row. 

Cast off firmly, being sure cast-off edge measures approx 9” - 9 ½”.

TO MAKE UP: 
Sew bottom 17 rows of back similar 17 rows of each front. 

Sew bottom 17 rows of each sleeve tog for sleeve seam, then rem of side edges of this cape section to side edges of fronts. 

Sew cast-off edges of neckband tog & placing this seam at centre-back of neck, sew in position, gathering about 6 rows to curve around each front corner. 

Sew buttons to correspond to buttonholes.
