Free Pattern - Vintage 1960s Classique Cape #367

Vintage 1960s Classique Cape #367 
SIZES: 
Directions to fit bust 32” to 34”, with changes for sizes 36” to 38” in brackets.

MATERIALS: 
Paton’s Beehive Molana 1 oz balls, 9 [10]
1 Pair #5 Knitting Needles
1 Button or Button Mold approx 1 ¼”

GAUGE:  
8 sts & 11 rows = 2”
Be sure to knit to this tension, so that your cape will be at least 16” deep. 

STOLE:
Beg at lower edge, cast on 212 [227]sts.

** Beg with k row, work 11 rows st st ending with k row.

12TH ROW:  K.

13TH ROW:  P.  **

Rep 12th & 13th rows once more, 12th row once, then from ** to ** once.  [29 rows in all.]

1ST DEC ROW:  K 2, * k 2 tog, k 9, k 2 tog, k 2.  Rep from * to end of row. 

P 1 row. 

K 1 row. 

Rep from ** to ** once.

2ND DEC ROW:  K 2, * k 2 tog, k 7, k 2 tog, k 2.  Rep from * to end of row. 

P 1 row. 

K 1 row. 

Rep from ** to ** once.

3RD DEC ROW:  K 2, * k 2 tog, k 5, k 2 tog, k 2.  Rep from * to end of row. 

P 1 row. 

K 1 row. 

Rep from ** to ** once.

4TH DEC ROW:  K 2, * k 2 tog, k 3, k 2 tog, k 2.  Rep from * to end of row. 

P 1 row. 

K 1 row.

Beg with k row, work 7 rows st st, ending with k row.

NEXT ROW:  P 2, * p 2 tog, p 1, p 2 tog, p 2.  Rep from * to end of row.  72 [77] sts on needle.

NEXT ROWS:  K 1 row. P 1 row. 

Cast off loosely, being sure cast-off edge measures about 32” [33”].

TO FINISH ENDS: 
Cast on 14 sts. 

Beg with k row, work 10 rows st st, ending with p row.  Cast off. 

Make another piece exactly the same.

The wide purl stripes of cape are right side of work. 

Having cast-on edge for outside edge of work, sew side edges of one of these 14” pieces to corresponding purl stripe at top & bottom of cape. 

For left side, gather remainder of edge up to about 3 ½” in order to fit this piece & sew in position. 

Finish right side to correspond, leaving an opening in centre to form buttonhole & reinforce gathered edge of buttonhole so it won’t break.

BUTTONMOLD COVER: 
This should be a finely knit piece. 

With #10 needles cast on 12 sts. 

Work 2” st st.  Cast off. 

Press carefully. 

Cut a paper patt to indicate size required. 

Lay on knitted piece & trace out area required. 

Machine stitch over tracing if desired. 

Cut close to tracing & cover mold. 

Sew in position to correspond to buttonhole.
