Vintage Angora Knit Bolero # 332

Sizes: 
14, 16, & 18. 
Instructions are for size 14, changes for sizes 16 & 18 are in brackets.

Materials
Fleisher’s or Bucilla Imported French angora, 22 [23, 24] balls
1 Pair each #6 & #8 Knitting Needles
1 Crochet Hook #G/5

Gauge
#8 needles: 
5 sts = 1”;    
7 rows = 1”

Measurements: 
Bust line, buttoned:  36” [38”, 40”]
Width of back at underarm:  17 ½” [18 ½”, 19 ½”]

Back: 
With #6 needles, cast on 75 [80, 85] sts for facing.

Work Stockinette st [st st] - p 1 row, k 1 row - for 4 rows, end with k row. 

K 1 row from wrong side inserting needle in back of sts for turning ridge.

With #8 needles, k 1 row, p 1 row for 4 rows.

Inc 1 st each side of next row:  77 [82, 87] sts. 

Rep inc every 4th row 5 times; 87 [92, 97] sts. 

Work even until 5” above turning ridge, end with k row.  Mark for underarm.

Armholes: 
Bind off 5 sts at beg of each of next 2 rows. 

Dec 1 st each side every 2nd row 5 [6, 7] times; 67 [70, 73] sts. 

Work even until armholes meas 7” [7 ¼”, 7 ½”] above marker, end with p row.

Right Front: 
With #6 needles, cast on 39 [42, 44] sts for facing. 

Work facing & turning ridge as on back. 

With #8 needles, k 1 row, p 1 row for 4 rows, end at front edge. 

K next row inc 1 st at end of row; 40 [43, 45] sts. 

Cont st st, shape underarm edge as for left side of back at end of k rows; 45 [48, 50] sts.

Work even until same length as back to armhole, end at armhole edge.  Mark for underarm.

Armhole: 
Bind off 5 sts at beg of next row. 

Finish armhole shaping same as for left side of back; 35 [37, 38] sts. 

Work even until 2 ¾” [3”, 3 1/3”] above marker, end at front edge.

Neck shaping: 
Bind off 13 sts at beg of next row, work to end. 

Dec 1 st at neck edge every row 6 [7, 7] times; every 2nd row 9 times; 7 [8, 9] sts. 

Work even until armhole is same length as on back, end with p row. 

Bind off 7 [8, 9] sts for shoulder.

Left Front: 
With #6 needles, cast on 39 [42, 44] sts. 

Work facing & turning ridge as on right front. 

Work to correspond to right front shaping underarm, armhole & neck at opposite sides; 7 [8, 9] sts. 

Work even until armhole is same length as on back, end with k row. 

Bind off 7 [8, 9] sts for shoulder.

Sleeves: 
With #6 needles, cast on 50 [52, 54] sts. 

Work facing & turning ridge as on back. 

With #8 needles, inc 1 st each side of next row; rep inc every 6th row 5 times; 62 [64, 66] sts. 

Work even until 6” above turning ridge, end with k row. 

Bind off 5 sts at beg of each of next 2 rows. 

Dec 1 st each side every 2nd row 6 [7, 8] times; every 4th row twice; every 2nd row 4 times. 

Bind off 2 sts at beg of each of next 6 rows. 

Bind off 16 sts.

Finishing: 
Sew seams sewing 7 [8, 9] sts of front shoulder to 7 [8, 9] sts of back. 

Turn back facings & hem to wrong side. 

Sew in sleeves with seam at center underarm.

Border: 
1st row: 
Beg at lower right front edge, work 29 [30, 31] sc on front edge working thru double thickness of hem, about 1 sc in every 2nd row.

2nd row:  buttonhole row:  ch 2, turn, sk 1 st for buttonhole, * work 1 sc in each of next 8 sts, ch 1 for buttonhole, sk 1 st; rep from *, end work 1 [2, 3] sc.

3rd row:  Ch 1, turn, work 1 sc in each sc & ch.  Fasten off.

Work 3 rows sc on left front edge to correspond to border on right front omitting buttonholes.

Collar: 
With #8 needles, cast on 18 sts.  P 1 row.

Inc row:  K, inc 1 st in each st; 36 sts.  Work even in st st until 37” from beg.

Dec row:  K 2 tog 18 times in succession; 18 sts.  P 1 row.  Bind off.

Break yarn leaving 12” end. 

Run end thru bound-off sts & draw up tightly.  Fasten off. 

Draw end thru cast-on sts in same way.

Finishing: 
Cut 2 layers of cotton batting 5” wide & 36”long. 

Fold batting lengthwise. 

Cut ends rounded. 

Place batting on wrong side of collar at center & tack ends to collar with matching sewing thread. 

Weave side edges of collar tog. 

Sew collar to neck edge with seam of collar at neck edge & ends of collar at front edge.
