Vintage 1970s Baby’s Lace Christening Robe #1346

Knit a beautiful Christening robe (it's easy, too). Your baby will look adorable in this
Exquisite dress with a delicate, hand-knitted lacy pattern. The skirt is in a simple pattern,
& the bodice in stocking stitch.

MATERIALS:
10 (11) Balls Sirdar Wonderland Wash 'n' Wear 4-ply (20g)
1 Pair Each #10 & #11 Knitting Needles
1 Crochet Hook #3.00
2 Small Buttons
Narrow Ribbon

MEASUREMENTS:
Bust = 41 (46) cm – 16” (18”)
Length from shoulder = 60 (62) cm - 23½” (24½”)
Sleeve seam = 13 (15) cm – 5” (6”)

TENSION:
15 Sts = 5 cm (2”) over st st

FRONT:
Use #10 needles cast on 153 (161) sts & work 4 rows st st.

HEMLINE ROW:
K 1, * y fwd, k 2 tog, rep from * to end.

Start with p row work 3 rows st st.

PATTERN:
1ST ROW: K 3, * k 2 tog, y fwd, k 6, rep from * to last 6 sts, k 2 tog, y fwd, k 4.

2ND & EACH ALT ROW: P.

3RD ROW: K 2, * k 2 tog, y fwd. k 1, y fwd, k 2 tog, tbl, k 3, rep from * to last 7 sts, k 2
tog, y fwd, k 1, y fwd, k 2 tog, tbl, k 2.

5TH ROW: K 1. * k 2 tog, y fwd, k 3, y fwd, k 2 tog, tbl, k 1, rep from * to end.

7TH ROW: Rep 3rd row.

9TH ROW: K.

11TH ROW: K 7, * k 2 tog, y fwd, K 6, rep from * to last 2 sts, k 2.

13TH ROW: K 6, * k 2 tog, y fwd, k 1, y fwd, k 2 tog, tbl, k 3, rep from * to last 3 sts,
k 3.
15TH ROW: K 5, * k 2 tog, y fwd, k 3, y fwd, k 2 tog, tbl, k 1, rep from * to last 4 sts, k 4.

17TH ROW: Rep 13th row.
                         
19TH ROW: K.

20TH ROW: P.

These 20 rows form patt.

Cont in patt, until work meas 48 (50) cm – 19” (19½”) from hemline, ending with p row.

NEXT ROW: (Dec) k 0 (4), k 3 tog 8 times. * k 2 tog, rep from * to last 27 (31) sts, k
3 tog 9 times, k 0 (4), (68 (76) sts)

NEXT ROW: P.

NEXT ROW: (RIBBONHOLES) kl,* y fwd, k 2 tog, rep from * to last st, k 1.

Work 7 rows st st, beg with p row.

SHAPE ARMHOLES:
Cast off 4 sts at beg next 2 rows.

Cont, in st st, dec 1 st each end of next & alt rows until 54 (58) sts rem. ***

Work 15 rows st st without shaping.

SHAPE NECK:
NEXT ROW: K 20 (22) turn, leaving balance of sts on spare needle.

Dec 1 st at neck edge in every alt row until 16 (17) sts rem.

Work 1 row without shaping.

SHAPE SHOULDER:
Cast off 8 sts at beg next row, then rem 8 (9) sts on foll alt rows.

Sl centre 14 sts on holder & leave, join yarn to next st & compl to corres with other side,
reverse shapings.

BACK:
Work as front to ***.

Work 5 (7) rows without shaping.

DIVIDE FOR BACK OPENING:
1ST ROW: K 27 (29) sts, turn, leave balance of sts on holder.

2ND ROW: K 1, p to end.

3RD ROW: K.

Rep last 2 rows 8 times, then 2nd row once. 

SHAPE SHOULDERS:
Cast off 8 sts at beg next row, then 8 (9) sts at beg foll alt row. 

Work 1 row.

Cast off rem 11(12) sts 

With RS facing join yarn to rem sts at opening edge & compl to corres with other side. 

SLEEVES:
Use #10 needles, cast on 49 sts & work hem & first 10 patt rows as for front.

Cont in st st, inc 1 st each end of next & foll 4th rows until 55 (59) sts. 

Cont without shaping until sleeve meas 13 (15) cm – 5” (6”) from hemline, end with p row. 

SHAPE TOP:
Cast off 2 sts at beg next 2 rows.

Dec 1 st each end of next & foll, alt rows until 45 (41) sts, then every row until 15 sts rem.
Cast off. 

FINISHING:
Press lightly with dry cloth & cool iron. 

Using fine back st, join side, shoulder & sleeve seams.

Sew in sleeves.

Turn up hems on skirt & sleeves & sl st in place. 

NECK EDGING:
With RS facing & # 11 needles pick up & k 11 (12) sts across left back neck, 11
(12) sts alongside neck, 14 sts from centre front, 11 (12) sts alongside neck & 11 (12)
sts across right back neck. 

Beg p row work 3 rows st st. 

4TH ROW: K 1, * y fwd, k 2 tog, rep from * to last st, k 1. 

Beg p row work 3 rows st st. Cast off loosely. 

Fold neck edging in half to WS on 4th row & sl st loosely in place.

With RS facing, work 1 row DC around back opening, make 2-CH 4 buttonholes on RS.

Attach buttons. 

Thread ribbon thru holes at waist & patt, at sleeves.

Lightly press seams & hems with cool iron & dry cloth.
