Vintage 1951 Short Cape Stole #342

A clever needle worker will quickly create this lovely cape…then commence another in a different color…a perfect top for your outfit & a season-spanning wardrobe favorite to keep or gift!

MATERIALS: 
Bear Brand Tricolaine
OR
Fleisher’s Silhouette, 8 skeins
1 Pair #4 Knitting Needles
#4 Steel Crochet Hook

GAUGE: 
7 sts = 1”

ABBREVIATIONS:
BEG                =  Begin                     DEC               =  Decrease
INC                 =  Increase                K                     =  Knit
P                     =  Purl                        REM               =  Remain
REP                =  Repeat                   ST                   =  Stitch
TOG                =  Together                YO                  =  Yarn Over

ALTERNATE VERSION WITHOUT FRINGE TRIMMING: 
Work as shown below, but work 2” even before 1st dec row, instead of 1” even on back, left front & right front. 

Upon finishing garment, work 2 rows sc around all edges, keeping work flat.  Omit fringe,

CAPE:  BACK: 
Cast on 228 sts. 

Work Stockinette st for 1”. 

Dec 1 st each side of next row; 226 sts. 

Work 1” even. 

Always include dec row in part worked even, end on wrong side.

1st dec row:  Dec 1 st each side & 12 more sts evenly spaced across row; 212 sts. 

Work 1” even.

Dec 1 st each side of next row; 210 sts. 

Work 1” even.

2nd dec row:  Same as 1st dec row; 196 sts. 

Rep 1st dec row every 1” 5 times more; 126 sts; place marker each side of last row for beg of shoulder shaping.

SHOULDER SHAPING: 
Dec 1 st each side every 2nd row 4 times; 118 sts. 

P 1 row. 

Rep 1st dec row once; 104 sts. 

P 1 row. 

Dec 1 st each side of next row; 102 sts.

P 1 row. 

Bind off 3 sts at beg of each of next 6 rows; 84 sts.

9th dec row:  Bind off 3 sts at beg of next row, dec 12 sts evenly spaced across remainder or row; 69 sts.

Bind off 3 sts at beg of each of next 11 rows. 

Bind off remaining 36 sts for back of neck.

LEFT FRONT: 
Cast on 114 sts. 

Work st st for 1”, end with p row. 

Dec 1 st at beg of next row. 

Work 1” even, end with p row.

1st dec row:  Dec 1 st at beg of row & 6 sts more evenly spaced across row. 

Keep front edge even & continue shaping side edge to correspond to back, rep 6 decs across row 2” above 1sdt dec; then every 1” 5 times, end at front edge; 63 sts. 

Place a marker at beg of last dec row for beg of shoulder shaping.

NECK SHAPING: 
Bind off 10 sts at beg of next row, p to end. 

Dec 1 st each side of next row. 

Rep decs at each side every 2nd row 3 times more; 45 sts. 

P 1 row.

8th dec row:  Dec 1 st at beg & end of row & 6 sts spaced evenly across; 37 sts. 

P 1 row. 

Dec 1 st each side of next row; 35 sts. 

Rep dec at neck edge every 2nd row twice more; at the same time bind off 3 sts at beg of each of next 3 k rows; 24 sts. 

P 1 row.

9th dec row:  bind off 3 sts, dec 6 sts evenly spaced across remainder of row; 15 sts. 

Bind off 3 sts at beg of every k row until all sts are bound off.

RIGHT FRONT: 
Work to correspond to left front, shaping side edge at end of k rows & neck edge at beg of k rows. 

COLLAR: 
Cast on 100 sts for lower edge. 

P 1 row. 

Work st st, inc 1 st each side every row 6 times; 112 sts. 

Work 10 rows even. 

On next row, dec 16 sts evenly spaced across row; 96 sts. 

P 1 row.  Bind off. 

From right side, work 1 row sc on side & lower edges.

FINISHING: 
Sew side seams. 

From right side, work 1 row sc around all edges, keeping work flat. 

Sew on collar. 

Make a small button loop at neck edge. 

FRINGE: 
Wind yarn on 2 ½” cardboard; cut one end.  Knot 4 strands in 1st & every 2nd st on lower edge of cape & around collar.
