Vintage 1940’s Hat & Bag #317
 Materials:  
American Thread Company “Dawn” Knitting Worsted Art. #W11, W41, or W42, 7 oz
“Star” Rayon Cotton Art. #700, 2 balls
#6/H Crochet Hook
2 Bone Rings 1 ¼” diameter                     
1 ¾ yds Narrow Grosgrain Ribbon
¼ yd Felt for Lining                                     
Buckram
1 Button 1 ½”                                               
1 Metal Button ½”

Hat:  Crown: 
Ch 3, join to form rind, ch 1 & work 6 sc in ring, do not join rnds. 

Place marker at beg of each rnd.

2nd rnd:  2 Sc in each sc [12 sc].

3rd rnd:  * 1 Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * all around.

4th rnd:  * 1 Sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * all around.

5th rnd:  * 1 Sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * all around [30 sc].

6th to 11th rnds:  Same as last rnd having 1 more st bet inc points in each rnd [6 sts inc in each rnd].

12th rnd:  1 Sc in each sc.

13th rnd:  * 1 Sc in each of the next 10 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * all around [72 sc]. 

Work 8 rnds even, break yarn.

Trimming: 
Using 1 strand of yarn & 1 strand of Rayon ch 7, join to form ring, ch 1 & work 1 sc in each st of ch, without joining & working on inside of roll, work 1 sc in each sc until roll measures about 30”. 

Sew roll to lower edge of hat crossing roll in front of hat.

Button Trimming: 
Using 1 strand of yarn & 1 strand of Rayon ch 4, join to form ring, ch 1 & work 9 sc in ring, do not join.

2nd rnd:  2 Sc in each sc, then work 3 rnds even in sc, break yarn & thread. 

Using 1 strand of yarn only work another button trimming in same manner. 

Cover large button with this piece. 

Sew metal button in center of large button. 

Place covered button in center of 1st button trimming. 

Sew on top of hat.

Bag:  Front Section:
Ch 4, join to form ring, ch 1 & work 9 sc in ring, do not join this or following rnds.  Place marker at beg of each rnd.

2nd rnd:  2 Sc in each sc.

3rd rnd:  * 1 Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * all around [27 sc].

4th rnd:  1 Sc in each sc. 

5th rnd:  3 Sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 7 sc, 3 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in each of next 3 sc, 1 sc in each of next 6 sc, 2 sc in each of next 3 sc, 1 sc in each remaining sc.

6th rnd:  Sc in next sc, 3 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 9 sc, 3 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each remaining sc.

7th rnd:  1 sc in each sc to center sc of 3 sc group, 3 sc in center sc of group, 1 sc in each of next 11 sc, 3 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 12 sc, 2 sc in each of next 6 sc, 1 sc in each remaining sc.

8th rnd:  1 Sc in each sc to center of 3 sc group, 3 sc in center sc of group, 1 sc in each of next 13 sc, 3 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each remaining sc.

9th rnd:  1 sc in each sc to center sc of next 3 sc group, 3 sc in center sc of group, 1 sc in each of next 15 sc.  3 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 9 sc, 2 sc in each of next 5 sc, 1 sc in each of next 11 sc, 2 sc in each of next 5 sc, 1 sc in each remaining sc.

10th rnd:  1 Sc in each sc all around working 3 sc in center sc of both 3 sc groups.

Repeat 10th rnd 5 times, break yarn. 

Work another section in same manner.

Gusset: 
Ch 51, 3 sc in 2nd st from hhok, 1 sc in each remaining st of ch working 3 sc in last st of ch, working on opposite side of ch, 1 sc in each st. 

Work 4 more rnds in sc working 1 sc in each sc & 3 sc in center sc at each end, break yarn. 

Line front & back with felt. 

Line gusset with buckram & felt & sew in position. 

Bag Opening: 
Work row of sc around opening, having 32 sc on each side [64 sc].

Next rnd:  1 Sc in each of next 3 sc, * ch 3, sk 1 sc, 1 sc in each of next 4 sc, rep from * 4 times, ch 3, sk 1 sc, 1 sc in each of next 6 sc, * ch 3, sk 1 sc, 1 sc in each of next 4 sc, rep from * 4 times, ch 3, sk 1 sc, 1 sc in each of next 3 sc, join. 

Next rnd:  1 Sc in base of each sc working over the entire st & 3 sc in each loop, join, break yarn.

Handle:
With 1 strand of yarn & 1 strand of Rayon, ch 5, join to form ring & work same as roll on hat until piece measures about 30”. 

Work another roll measuring 36” in same manner. 

Stretch each piece thoroughly before attaching to bag to avoid stretching afterwards.

Insert 2 rings over the longest roll, having 2 rings at top of each side; sew roll in position around entire gusset. 

Insert handle through same 2 rings & sew ends together.

Ch 6, 3 sc in 2nd st from hook, 1 sc in each remaining st of ch working 3 sc in last st, working on other side of ch, 1 sc in each st, join.

Next row:  1 Sc in each sc working 2 sc at center st at each end, join, break yarn.

Place over center of handles & sew in position.

Cut ribbon in half & lace through loops at top of bag, lacing 1 length from one side & the other from opposite side.
