Free Pattern - 1940’s Fancy Lace Cloche Hat #315

1940’s Fancy Lace Cloche Hat #315
 Materials:  
American Thread Company “De Luxe” Crochet Cotton yarn Art. #346, 2 balls
or “Puritan” Crochet Cotton yarn Art. #40, 2 balls
#4 Steel Crochet Hook
1 yd ½” Ribbon

Hat is worked with double strand of thread throughout.  Work tightly.

Ch 5, 1 dc in 5th st from hook, * ch 1, dc in same sp, rep from * 5 times, ch 1, join in 3rd st of ch.

2nd row:  Ch 3, dc in same sp, * ch 2, 2 dc in next dc, rep from * 6 times, ch 1, sc in 3rd st of ch [this brings thread in position for next row].

3rd row:  Ch 1, sc over sc, * ch 5, sc in next loop, rep from * all around end row with ch 1, trc in 1st sc.

4th row:  Ch 3, 1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc over trc, * ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in next loop, rep from * all around, end row ch 1, sc in 3rd st of ch.

5th row:  * Ch 5, sc in next loop, rep from * all around, end row with ch 2, dc in sc.

6th row:  * Ch 5, sc in next loop, rep from * all around, end row with ch 1, trc in dc.

7th row:  Same as 4th row.

8th row:  Same as 5th row.
9th row:  Work same as last row, end row with ch 2, dc in dc.

10th row:  Same as 6th row.

11th row:  Ch 3, 1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in same loop, * ch 1, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in next loop, rep from * all around, end row with ch 1, join in 3rd st of ch.

12th row:  Sl st to next ch 2 loop, sc in same sp, * ch 5, sc in next ch 2 loop, rep from * all around, end row with ch 2, dc in 1st sc.

13th & 14th rows:  * Ch 6, sc in next loop, rep from * all around, end each row with ch 3, dc in dc.

15th row:  * Ch 6, sc in next loop, rep from * all around, end row with ch 2, trc in dc [6” in diameter].

16th row:  Same as 11th row.

17th row:  Sl st to next ch 2 loop, sc in same sp, * ch 6, sc in next ch 2 loop, rep from * all around, end row with ch 3, dc in sc.

18th row:  Same as 15th row, end row with ch 3, dc in dc.

19th & 20th rows:  * Ch 7, sc in next loop, rep from * all around, end each row with ch 3, dc in dc.

21st row:  Same as lost row, end row with ch 2, d trc [3 times over hook] in dc.

22nd row:  Same as 11th row.

23rd row:  Same as 17th row.  [If deeper crown is desired, work 1 more row of loops.]

Next row:  Ch 3, 2 dc over dc, * 6 dc in next loop, rep from * all around, end row with 3 dc in 1st loop, join. 

Next row:  * Ch 5, sk 2 dc, sc in next dc, rep from * all around, end row with ch 2, dc in joining.

Next 4 rows:  * Ch 5, sc in next loop, rep from * all around end each row with ch 2, dc in dc.

Next row:  Ch 3, dc over dc, * 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in next loop, rep from * all around, end row with 2 dc in 1st loop, ch 2, join, break thread. 

Finishing: 
Starch & block.  Attach ribbon band as shown in photo.

Directions for Starching: 
Dissolve ¼ cup of starch in ½ cup of cold water. 

Boil about 1 ¼ cups of water, remove from flame, then slowly stir the starch mixture into boiling water until it thickens. 

As soon as starch is cool enough to handle, dip hat, squeeze starch thru it thoroughly.  Wring out extra starch. 

The hat should be wet with starch, but there should be none in the spaces. 

Place over head mold & let dry.
