Vintage 1970s Shimmery Shell A-Line Dress #1293

Silvery accents spark the blue of this charming dress to wear on warm summer evening. Crocheted in a close-together shell pattern, the blue is intermingled with rows of silver shells; silver edge the neck, armholes, & hem. The high, spare bodice has a shallow bateau neckling, & the skirt flares slightly to a moderate A- shape.

SIZE:
Small [8-10], Medium [12-14] & Large [16-18].

Directions are for size Small with changes for Medium & Large in brackets.

MEASUREMENTS:
Body Bust = 31 ½” – 32 ½” [34”-36”; 38”-40”]
Finished Bust = 33” [37”-41”]
Dress Length = 28” from lower edge to underarm. 
For longer or shorter length, add or subtract req # of inches before 1st dec row. More yarn may be needed for longer dress.

MATERIALS:
Bernat Mignonette Knitting Ribbon, 100 yd Spools:
Main Color [MC] 10 [12-14]; Contrast Color [CC] 4 [5-5]
1 Aluminum Crochet Hook Size I [UK #8]
Matching Sewing Thread

GAUGE/TENSION:
1 Shell = 2”
8 Rows = 5”

Pattern is multiple of 6 CH plus 2.

PATTERN:
1ST ROW: SC in 2nd CH from hk, * sk 2 CH, 5 DC [
NOTE: pull up 1st lp of each DC 1” high] in next CH, sk 2 CH, SC in next CH [shell], rep from * across. Turn each row.

2ND ROW: With MC, half shell of CH 3, 2 DC in 1st SC, * sk 2 DC, SC in next DC [center DC of shell], sk 2 DC, work shell of 5 DC in next SC, rep from * across, end half shell of 3 DC in last SC.

3RD ROW: With MC, CH 1, SC in 1st DC, * shell in next SC, SC in center DC of next shell, rep from * across, end SC in top of turning CH. Cut MC & join CC.

4TH ROW: With CC, rep 2nd row. Cut CC & join MC.

5TH ROW: With MC, CH 1, SC in 1st DC, * shell over CC SC into center DC of shell on 3rd row, SC in center DC of next shell, rep from * across, end SC in top of turning CH.

Rep 2nd – 5th rows for patt.

DRESS:
BACK:
Beg at lower edge with MC, CH 68 [74-80].

Work in patt on 11 [12-13] shells until piece meas 9”, end patt 3rd or 5th row.

Piece meas 22” [24”-26”] wide.

DEC ROW: Keep to patt, CH 1, sl st to center DC of 1st shell, SC in center DC, work in patt across, end SC in center DC of last shell – ½ shell dec each side.

Rep dec row every 4” twice.

Work even on 8 [9-10] shells until piece meas 28” from start or needed length to underarm, end on patt 3rd or 5th row.

Mark each side of last row for underarm.

SHAPE ARMHOLES:
Rep dec row twice = 6 [7-8] shells.

Work even until armhole meas approx 5 ½” above 1st marked row, end on patt 2nd or 4th row.

SHAPE NECK & SHOULDERS:
Work 1 ½ shells, drop yarn; sk next 3 [4-5] shells, with shoulder strand of MC, sl st in next SC, work half shell of CH 3, 2 DC in same SC, finish row = 1 ½ shells each side.

Keep to patt & work even until armholes meas 7” [7 ½”-8”]. Fasten off.

FRONT:
Work same as back.

FINISHING:
Sew shoulder seams flat.

Baste side seams. Try on & adjust seams.

Machine st side seams.

Steam press seams open flat.

With MC, work 1 row SC around armholes, holding in to needed fit.

EDGING:
Join CC in 1st SC at lower edge of left side seam.

From RS * work shell over SC, SC in base of shell, rep from * around lower edge. Fasten off,

With CC, work 1 row shell patt artound each armhole & neck edge.

Steam press edges.
