1970s After Dark Evening Gown #1301

SIZE:
Small [10], Medium [12], Large [14] & Extra Large [16].

Directions are for size Small with changes for Medium, Large & Extra Large in brackets

MATERIALS:
Reynolds Feu d’Artifice, 20 gr Balls: 22 [24-26-28]
1 Steel Crochet Hook #0 [UK #12]
Taffeta Fabric Lining [skirt]
1 Zipper [back opening]

GAUGE/TENSION:
13 DC = 2”
3 DC Rows = 1”
6 Patt Rows = 1 ½” [skirt]

MEASUREMENTS:
Body Bust = 32 1/2” [34”-36”-38”]
Finished Bust = 32 ½” [34”-37”-39”]

GOWN:
BODICE:
RIGHT BACK:
Beg at lower edge, CH 38 [42-46-50] loosely.

1ST ROW: DC in 4th CH from hk [count as 2 DC], DC in each CH across = 36 [40-44-48] DC.

Piece should be 5 ½” [6”-6 ½”-7 ½”] wide.

2ND ROW: CH 3 [count as 1 DC], sk 1st DC, DC in each of 16 [18-20-22] DC, inc 1 DC in next DC [mark inc sts], DC across, 2 DC in last DC, DC in top of TCH [mark this side edge] = 38 [42-46-50] DC. CH 3, turn.

3RD ROW: CH 3, sk 1st DC, DC in each DC across, DC in top of TCH.

4TH ROW: Inc 1 DC at marker & inc 1 DC at side edge.

5TH – 20TH ROWS: Rep last 2 rows 6 times, then inc 1 DC at side edge EVERY OTHER row twice = 54 [58-62-66] DC.

Work even for 2 rows, & end at side edge. CH 1, turn.

Bodice to top of shoulder will meas 15” [15”-15 ½”-15 ½”].

Make any needed adjustments BEFORE armhole.

SHAPE ARMHOLE:
1ST ROW: Sl st loosely across 5 DC, work 2 decs, DC in each DC, end DC in top of TCH [center back].
TURN EACH ROW.

2ND ROW: CH 3 [count as 1 DC at center back], sk 1 DC, Dc to within 4 DC of armhole, work 2 decs.

3RD ROW: Make 2 decs, DC in each DC, end DC in top of TCH.

4TH & 5TH ROWS: Rep 2nd & 3rd rows of center back = 39 [43-47-51] DC. CH 1, turn.

SHAPE NECK:
6TH ROW: Sl st loosely across 1st 10 [10-10-14] DC [neck], work 2 decs, DC to within 4 DC of arm side, work 2 decs. Turn.

Cont to make 2 decs at each side of each row until 2 DC rem. Fasten off.

LEFT BACK:
Work same as right back; patt is reversible.

FRONT:
CH loosely 94 [102-110-118].

1ST ROW: DC in 4th CH from hk, DC in each CH across = 92 [100-108-116] DC.

Piece should be 14” [15 ¼”-16 ½”-17 ½”] wide.

Mark 26th [28th-30th-33rd] DC from each side for darts.

Work in DC, inc 1 DC each side edge EVERY OTHER row 5 times; AT SAME TIME, * inc 1 DC at each dart marker EVERY row 3 times, work 1 row even; rep from * twice, then rep dart inc EVERY row 3 times more = 126 [134-142-150] DC.

Piece should be 19 ½” [20 ½”-21 ½”-23”] wide.

Work even until same # of rows as back to armhole.

Keep markers in work.

SHAPE ARMHOLES & NECK:
1ST ROW: Sl st loosely across 5 DC, work 2 decs, DC in 51 [55-59-63] DC, dec 1 DC twice, drop yarn; join 2nd ball of yarn & dec 1 DC twice, DC in 50 [54-58-62] Dc, dec 1 DC twice, turn, leave 5 DC unworked = 54 [58-62-66] DC each side of neck.

Work on BOTH SIDES at once, dec 1 DC twice at arm & neck edge of each side every row 11 [12-13-14] times; AT SAME TIME, dec 1 DC at each marker every row 8 times = 2 DC rem each side. Turn.

Make 1 DC on each strap. Sl each rem lp onto safety pin.

Weave side seams.

With hk, sl lp from 1 holder of front, CH 53 loosely, join with sl st to last DC at tip of back armhole, CAREFUL, DO NOT twist CH. Fasten off & secure ends.

Work in same way for other shoulder.

NECKBAND & SHOULDER STRAP:
Make lp on hk, from RS, beg at left back opening, 32 [34-36-38] DC across back neck, 53 DC across strap CH, 33 [35-37-39] DC on left front neck, 1 DC at point of V; work 33 [35-37-39] DC up right front neck, 53 Dc across strap CH & 32 [34-36-38] Dc across right back neck = 237 [245-253-261] DC. Turn each row.

LOOP STITCH BAND:
1ST ROW: CH 1, SC in 1st DC, * CH 5 loosely, sk 3 DC, SC in next DC; rep from * across = 59 [61-63-65] lps.

2ND ROW: CH 1, SC in 1st SC; in each lp make [2 SC, CH 2, 2 SC]; SC in end SC.

3RD ROW: CH 1, SC in 1st SC, * CH 3 loosely, SC in CH-2 sp; rep from * across, end CH 3, SC in last SC.

4TH ROW: CH 3, DC in 1st SC, 2 DC in 1st lp, * DC in next SC, 3 DC in next lp; rep from * across, dec if nec to needed fit, end 2 DC in last lp, DC in last DC. Fasten off.

SKIRT:
From RS, beg in starting CH of right back, make lp on hk, work DC in each DC of right back, front & left back = 165 [181-197-213] DC. CH 1, turn.

LOOP STITCH BAND:
1ST – 3RD ROWS: Work same as patt 1st – 3rd rows of neckband = 42 [46-50-54] CH-3 lps on 3rd row; 1 lp less on 1st row.

4TH ROW [1ST INC ROW]: CH 3, 2 [2-2-3] DC in each of 1 [2-2-4] lps, * [DC in next SC, 4 DC in next lp] twice, DC in next SC, 3 DC in next lp; rep from * 12 [13-14-14] times more, end DC in next SC, 3 DC in next lp, DC in next SC, 2 [2-2-3] DC in each of last 1 [1-2-4] lps, DC in last SC = 193 [209-225-241] DC.

5TH & 6TH ROWS: CH 3, sk 1 DC, DC in each DC across, end DC in top of TCH.

7TH – 9TH ROWS: Rep patt 1st – 3rd rows of neckband = 49 [53-57-61] CH-3 lps on 3rd row.

10TH ROW [2ND INC ROW]: Beg same as 4th row & work from 1st * to 2nd * 14 [15-16-16] times; [DC in next SC, 3 DC in next lp] 3 times, 2 DC in next lp; then end same as 4th row = 221 [237-253-269] DC.

11TH & 12TH ROWS: Rep 5th & 6th rows.

13TH – 15TH ROWS: Rep 1st – 3rd rows of neckband = 56 [60-64-68] CH-3 lps on 3rd row.

16TH ROW [3RD INC ROW]: CH 3, * 3 DC in lp, DC in next SC; rep from * across, inc 7 DC evenly spaced on front & 3 DC on each back section = 237 [253-269-285] DC.

17TH & 18TH ROWS: Rep 5th & 6th rows.

19TH – 21ST ROWS: Rep 1st – 3rd rows of neckband = 60 [64-68-72] CH-3 lps on 3rd row.

22ND ROW [4TH INC ROW]; Rep 16th row = 253 [269-285-301] DC.

23RD & 24TH ROWS: Rep 5th & 6th rows.

25TH – 27TH ROWS: Rep 1st – 3rd rows of neckband = 64 [68-72-76] CH-3 lps on 3rd row.

28TH ROW [5TH INC ROW]: Rep 16th row = 269 [285-301-317] DC; CH 3 at end of row & join with sl st in 1st DC of 2nd half of back with right side up, to close back opening, 5 lp st bands are compl.

1ST RND: CH 3, DC in each DC around & in each CH of joining CH = 272 [288-304-320] DC. Join in top of CH-3.

2ND RND: CH 3, DC in each DC around. Join.

3RD RND: * CH 5, sk 3 DC, SC in next SC; rep from * around, end CH 5, sk 3 DC, join in 1st SC = 68 [72-76-80] CH-5 lps.

4TH RND: In each CH-5 lp, make [2 SC, CH 2, 2 SC] around. Sl st in each of next 2 SC in 1st lp.

5TH RND: CH 1, * SC in CH-2 sp, CH 3 loosely; rep from * around, end CH 3, sl st in 1st SC = 68 [72-76-80] CH-3 lps.

6TH RND [1ST INC RND]: CH 3, * 3 DC in next CH-3 sp, DC in next SC; rep from * around, inc 12 DC evenly spaced around = 284 [300-316-332] DC. Join in top of CH-3.

7TH & 8TH RNDS: Rep 2nd rnd = 284 [300-316-332] DC.

9TH - 11TH RNDS: Rep 3rd – 5th rnds = 71 [75-79-83] lps.

12TH RND [2ND INC RND]: Rep 6th rnd = 296 [312-328-344] DC.

** Rep 7th – 12th rnds, have 12 DC more after each rep rnd on patt 7th, 8th & 12th rnds; 3 more lps after each rep rnd on patt 9th & 11th rows **.

There are 3 lp st & 3 DC bands compl from back opening.

Rep from 1st ** to ** until there are 19 lp st bands compl from back opening.

Omit incs on 12th rnd & work as establ until 1” less then desired length, end patt 8th row. Join, fasten off.

FINISHING:

From RS, work 1 row SC around back opening.

Work 1 row SC around armholes & neck, dec if nec to needed fit.

Block with steam iron & pressing cloth on WS to needed size & length.

Line skirt loosely, tack to waist & back opening.

Hem lining 1” shorter than skirt.

Sew in back zipper.
