Vintage 1970s Mod Ruffled Mesh Dress #1289

Ruffles…a cascade at the neck, around wrists…give a two-piece dress a charming air of nostalgia. The dress is crocheted in openwork pattern with a mesh look. The blouse buttons down the back; the sleeves are full & tightly narrowed above the wrists. The waist of dirndl skirt is gathered over wide elastic.

SIZE:
10, 12, 14 & 16.

Directions are for size 10 with changes for 12, 14 & 16 in brackets.

MATERIALS:
J & P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 250 yd Balls: 13 [15-17-19]
1 Steel Crochet Hook #1 [UK #1/2]
17 Small Buttons
½ yd Round Elastic
1 yd Wide Elastic 1 ½”

MEASUREMENTS:
Body Bust = 32 ½” [34”-36”-38”]
Finished Bust [Closed] = 35” [37”-39”-41”]

GAUGE/TENSION:
2 V Sts = 1”
3 Rows = 1”

PATTERN:
1ST ROW: [WS]: Sk 6 CH, * DC, CH 3, DC in next CH [V st], sk 3 CH, rep from * across, end sk 3 CH, DC in last CH. CH 6, turn.

2ND ROW: DC bet DC & V st [turning CH & DC count as 1 V st, * sk CH-3 sp, V st of DC, CH 3, DC bet next 2 DC, rep from * across, end sk CH-3 sp, V st of DC, CH 3, DC in turning CH. CH 1, turn.

3RD ROW: SC in 1st DC, * 3 SC in CH-3 sp, CH 1, rep from * across, end CH 1, 4 SC in turning CH. CH 3, turn.

4TH ROW: Sk 1st 4 SC, * V st in next CH-1 sp, sk next 3 SC, rep from * across, end sk 3 SC, DC in last SC. CH 6, turn.

Rep 2nd – 4th rows for patt.

SKIRT:
BACK:
Beg at lower edge, CH 191 [207-223-239] to meas approx 8 CH to 1”.

Work in patt with 46 [50-54-58] V sts on 1st & 4th rows; 47 [51-55-59] V sts on 2nd row.

Work even until piece meas 19” [19”-20”-20 ½”] or 2” less [waistband & border allowance] then needed skirt length, end patt 2nd row. DO NOT fasten off.

Piece should meas 23” [25”-27”-28”] wide.

SIDE EDGING:
Work down side edge, work 2 SC in end sp of last row, * 3 SC in next end sp, SC in end of SC row, 2 SC in end sp of next row, rep from * across, end 3 SC in end sp of 1st row. Fasten off.

From RS, beg at lower edge of opp side edge, work 3 SC in end sp of 1st row, * 2 SC in next end sp, SC in end of SC row, 3 SC in next end sp, rep from * to upper edge, end 2 SC in end sp of last row. Fasten off.

FRONT:
Work same as back.

FINISHING:
Sew side seams.

LOWER BORDER:
Join thread in side seam.

1ST RND: [RS] CH 1, SC in side seam, * 3 SC in CH-3 sp, SC bet 2 DC of V st, rep from * around. Join with sl st in 1st SC. CH 1, turn.

2ND – 6TH RNDS: SC in each SC around. Join with sl st in 1st SC. CH 1, turn. Fasten off.

BEADING:
[RS] Join thread at upper edge of side seam. CH 12 to meas 2”, * work 2 long sts [long st = YO hk 5 times, insert hk in CH-3 sp, draw up yarn ½”, (YO hk & thru 2 lps on hk) 6 times – st should meas 2” high] in next CH-3 sp, long st bet next 2 DC, rep from * around. Join with sl st in top of CH 12. Fasten off.

Cut wide elastic to waist meas. From RS, run elastic under 2 & over 1 long st around waistline. Sew ends securely.

BLOUSE:
FRONT:
Beg at lower edge, CH 147 [155-163-171] to meas approx 8 Ch to 1”.

Work in patt, have 35 [37-39-41] V sts on patt 1st – 4th rows, 36 [38-40-42] V sts on patt 2nd row.

Work in patt until 7 rows from start, end patt 4th row. CH 4, turn.

Piece should meas 18” [19”-20”-21”] wide.

8TH ROW: [DEC ROW] Sk 1st 2 DC & CH-3 sp, * V st bet next 2 DC, sk next CH-3 sp, rep from * across, end sk last CH-3 sp, TRC in turning CH sp – 1 V st dec each side. CH 1, turn.

9TH ROW: SC in TRC, * 3 SC in next CH-3 sp, Ch 1, rep from * across, end SC in turning CH sp = 104 [110-116-122] SC. CH 3, turn.

10TH ROW: Rep patt 4th row = 33 [35-37-39] V sts. CH 4, turn.

Rep 8th – 10th rows twice = 29 [31-33-35] V sts on last row. CH 6, turn.

Beg with patt 2nd row, work even until piece meas 7 ½” from start, end patt 4th row. CH 6, turn.

NEXT ROW: [INC ROW] DC bet DC & V st, work V st in CH-3 sp, work V st bet next 2 DC, work in patt across, end V st in CH-3 sp of last V st, V st in turning CH = 32 [34-36-38] V sts. CH 1, turn.

Work 2 rows even = 31 [33-35-37] V sts.

Rep last 3 rows twice more = 35 [37-39-41] V sts. CH 6, turn.

Beg with patt 2nd row, work even until piece meas 12” [12”-13 ½”-13 ½”] from start, end patt 4th row.

SHAPE ARMHOLE:
1ST ROW: [Sl st in next 2 DC & in each of next 3 CH] twice, CH 4, sk next 2 DC & CH-3 sp, V st bet next 2 DC, work in patt to within last 3 V sts, end sk next V st, TRC in next DC = 30 [32-34-36] V sts. CH 1, turn.

2ND ROW: SC in TRC, * 3 SC in next CH-3 sp, CH 1, rep from * across, end SC in turning CH sp. CH 3, turn.

3RD ROW: Work 1 row even = 29 [31-33-35] V sts. CH 4, turn.

4TH – 9TH ROWS: Rep dec 8th – 10th rows twice = 25 [27-29-31] V sts. CH 6, turn.

Beg with patt 2nd row, work even until piece meas approx 5” [5 ½”-6”-6 ½”] above start of armhole shaping, end patt 4th row. CH 6, turn.

SHAPE NECK:
1ST ROW: DC bet DC & V st, [V st in next sp bet V sts] 8 [8-9-9] times, DC in 2nd DC of next V st, CH 1, turn.

2ND ROW: Work 1 row even. CH 3, turn.

3RD ROW: Work 8 [8-9-9] V sts, sk next 3 SC, DC in next SC. CH 4, turn.

4TH ROW: Sk 1st 2 DC & CH-3 sp, V st bet next 2 DC, finish row = 8 [8-9-9] V sts. CH 1, turn.

Work 2 rows even, end arm side, turn.

SHAPE SHOULDER:
Sl st across 4 V sts, CH 3, finish row. Fasten off.

Sk next 7 [9-9-11] CH-3 sp on last long row, join yarn in next DC, CH 3, V st bet next 2 DC, finish row = 9 [9-10-10] V sts. CH 1, turn.

Compl as for 1st shoulder but reverse shaping.

From RS, work 1 row Sc on each side edge from lower edge to start of armhole shaping.

RIGHT BACK:
Beg at lower edge, CH 75 [79-83-87].

Work in patt having 17 [18-19-20] V sts on patt 1st & 4th rows, 18 [19-20-21] V sts on patt 
2nd row.

Work in patt for 7 rows, end patt 4th row. CH 4, turn.

Piece should meas 9” [9 ½”-10”-10 ½”] wide.

Mark beg of next row for side edge.

8TH ROW [DEC ROW]: Sk 1st 2 DC & CH-3 sp, work V st bet next 2 DC, finish row = 1 V st dec. CH 1, turn.

9TH ROW: Work in patt across, end SC in turning CH sp = 53 [56-59-62] SC. CH 3, turn.

10TH ROW: Rep patt 4th row = 16 [17-18-19] V sts. CH 6, turn.

11TH ROW: Work in patt across, end sk last CH-3 sp, TRC in turning CH = 16 [17-18-19] V sts. CH 1, turn.

12TH ROW: Work in patt across = 50 [53-56-59] SC. CH 3, turn.

13TH ROW: Work in patt, end sk 3 SC, DC in last SC = 15 [16-17-18] V sts. CH 4, turn.

14TH – 16TH ROWS: Rep 8th -10th rows = 14 [15-16-17] V sts. CH 6, turn.

Work even until piece meas 7 ½” from start, end center edge with patt 4th row. CH 6, turn.

Work inc rows as follows:
1ST ROW [INC ROW]: Work in patt across, end V st in CH-3 sp of last V st, V st in turning CH sp = 1 V st inc. CH 1, turn.

Work 2 rows even. CH 6, turn.

4TH ROW: DC bet DC & V st, work V st in CH-3 sp, work V st bet next 2 DC, finish row. CH 1, turn.

Work 2 rows even. CH 6, turn.

7TH – 9TH ROWS: Rep 1st – 3rd rows = 17 [18-19-20] V sts.

Work even until piece meas 12” [12”-13 ½”-13 ½”] from start, end side edge with patt 4th row. Turn.

SHAPE ARMHOLE:
1ST ROW: [Sl st in next 2 DC & in each of next 3 CH] twice, Ch 4, sk next 2 DC & CH-3 sp, work V st bet next 2 DC, finish row. CH 1, turn.

2ND ROW: Work in patt across, end SC in turning CH sp. CH 3, turn.

3RD ROW: Work 1 row even.

4TH ROW: Work in patt across, end sk last CH-3 sp, TRC in turning CH sp. CH 1, turn.

Work 2 rows even. CH 4, turn.

7TH ROW: Sk 1st 2 DC & CH-3 sp, work V st bet next 2 DC, work in patt across. CH 1, turn. 

Work even until armhole meas 6 ½” [7”-7 ½”-8”] above start of armhole shaping, end armhole edge with patt 2nd or 4th row. CH 1, turn.

SHAPE SHOULDER:
Sl st across 4 V sts, CH 2, finish row. Fasten off.

BUTTONHOLE BAND:
1ST ROW: RS, work 1 row SC down center edge, keep work flat. CH 1, turn.

2ND ROW: SC in each SC across. CH 1, turn.

With pins, mark evenly spaced places for 8 buttonholes on last row; have 1st pin ½” below neck edge, last pin 3 ½” above lower edge.

3RD ROW: * SC to within 1 SC of next pin, CH 2, sk 2 SC, rep from * 7 times, end SC in each SC to end of row. CH 1, turn.

4TH ROW: SC in each SC & CH across. CH 1, turn.

5TH ROW: SC in each SC across. Fasten off.

LEFT BACK:
Work same as right back for 7 rows.

Mark end of next row for side edge.

8TH ROW: [DEC ROW]: Work in patt across, end sk last CH-3 sp, TRC in turning CH sp = 1 V st dec. CH 1, turn.

Compl as for right back, BUT reverse shaping.

BUTTONBAND:
1ST ROW: RS, Work 1 row SC up center edge, keep work flat. CH 1, turn each row.

2ND – 5TH ROWS: SC in each SC across. Fasten off.

From RS, work 1 row SC on each side edge from lower edge to start of armhole shaping.

SLEEVES:
Beg at lower edge above cuff, CH 43 [47-49-53].

1ST ROW: SC in 2nd Ch from hk & in each CH across = 42 [46-48-52] SC. CH 6, turn.

2ND ROW: Sk 1st SC, DC in next SC, * sk next SC, V st in next SC, rep from * across = 21 [23-24-26] V sts. CH 1, turn.

3RD ROW: SC in 1st DC, * 3 SC in CH-3 sp, CH 1, rep from * across, end 4 SC in turning CH sp. CH 3, turn.

4TH ROW: Sk 1st 4 SC, * V st in next CH-1 sp, sk next 3 SC, rep from * across, end sk 3 SC, DC in last SC = 20 [22-23-25] V sts. CH 6, turn.

5TH ROW: Work patt 2nd row.

Work in patt as establ until piece meas 4” from start, end patt 4th row.

NEX ROW: [INC ROW}: Work same as inc row on front = 1 V st inc each side.

*Work even for 4”, end patt 4th row. Inc 1 V st each side of next row. Rep from * once.

Work even until piece meas 13” [13”-13 ½”-14”] from start, end patt 4th row = 26 [28-29-31] V sts. Turn.

Piece above last inc row should meas 13” [14”-14 ½”-15 ½”] wide.

SHAPE CAP:
1ST – 3RD ROWS: Work same as armhole shaping 1st – 3rd rows of front. CH 3, turn.

Work & rep dec 8th -10th rows on front until cap meas 4 ½” [5”-5 ½”-6”] above start of cap shaping. Fasten off.

CUFFS:
Beg at top edge CH 59 [63-67-71].

Work even in patt for 15 rows, end patt 3rd row. CH 5, turn.

Piece should meas 6 ½” [7”-7 12”-8”] wide.

RUFFLE:
1ST ROW: Sk 1st SC, * SC in next SC, CH 5, rep from * across. CH 7, turn each row.

2ND – 4TH ROWS: * SC in next CH-5 lp, Ch 5, rep from * across, end SC in turning CH. Fasten off.

Weave starting CH of cuff to lower edge of sleeve, & gather sleeve to fit cuff.

Work 1 row SC on each side of cuff & sleeve from lower edge of cuff to start of cap.

FRONT RUFFLES:
1ST RUFFLE: With neck edge toward you, from RS, join yarn to neck edge of 3rd row of neck shaping.

1ST ROW: CH 5, SC in same st as joining, [work CH 5, SC, CH 5, SC in end of next row] twice, CH 5, work [SC, CH 5] 3 times in each CH-3 sp across front of neck, work [SC, CH 5] twice in end of next 2 rows, end Sc in end of next row. CH 7, turn each row.

2ND – 5TH ROWS: * SC in next CH-5 sp, CH 5, rep from * across, end SC in last lp. Fasten off.

2ND RUFFLE: With neck edge toward you, from RS, sk next row of V sts below 1st ruffle, join yarn to base of V st on next V st row & 1” to right of beg of 1st ruffle.

1ST ROW: Work along SC row, work * CH 5, SC in next SC, rep from * across to 1” beyond end of 1st ruffle. CH 7, turn.

Compl as for 1st ruffle.

3RD RUFFLE: Have 2 rows of V sts bet ruffles, work 3rd ruffle along SC row making ruffle same size as 2nd ruffle.

Have 2 V st rows bet ruffles, make 4 more ruffles, & make each ruffle ½” shorter at each end than last ruffle made.

Sew side & shoulder seams.

NECKBAND & NECK RUFFLE:
1ST ROW: From RS, work 1 row SC around neck edge, keep work flat & have multiple of 3 SC plus 1. CH 1, turn.

2ND ROW: SC in each Sc across. CH 6, turn.

3RD ROW: DC in 1st SC, * sk 2 SC, V st in next SC, rep from * across, end sk 2 SC, DC in last SC. CH 6, turn.

4TH ROW: Work patt 2nd row across, end with V st in turning CH sp. CH 1, turn.

5TH ROW: Work over round elastic, work 3 Sc in each CH-3 sp. CH 7, turn.

6TH ROW: Sk 1st SC, SC in next SC, * CH 5, SC in next SC, rep from * across. CH 7, turn each row.

7TH – 9TH ROWS: * SC in next CH-5 lp, CH 5, rep from * across, end SC in last lp. Fasten off.

FINISHING:
Sew sleeve seams tog, beg 1” above cuff seam.

From RS, work 1 row SC around armholes & sleeve caps.

Sew in sleeves, & ease in cap to fit armhole.

Sew 4 buttons on each cuff & 1 button on neckband; sps bet V sts form buttonholes.

Sew buttons on left back band opp buttonholes.

Adjust round elastic to neck meas & fasten ends securely.
