Vintage 1970s Mod A-Line Dress with Lace Skirt #1287

SIZE:
8,10, 12 & 14.

Directions are for size 8 with changes for 10, 12 & 14 in brackets.

MATERIALS:
Nantuk, or Wintuk Sports Yarn, 4 ply: 16 [18-18-20] oz
1 Aluminum Crochet Hook #G
1 Steel Crochet Hook #00
[UK Sizes #5 & #11]
1 Placket Zipper 12”
1 ½ yds Fine Nylon Tulle 54” Wide
1 ½ yds Lining Fabric
2 yds Ribbon 2” Wide
Matching Sewing Thread

MEASUREMENTS:
Body Bust: 31 ½ “ [32 ½ “-34”-36”]
Finished Bust: 34” [36”-38”-40”]

GAUGE/TENSION: [With Size G Hook]:
1 Motif = 2 ½”
4 SC = 1”
11 Rows = 2”

SKIRT: BACK:
1ST MOTIF:
With #00 hk, CH 7, sl st in 1st CH to form ring.

1ST RND: Pull up ½” lp on hk, CH 3, * work HDC in ring, CH 2, rep from * 6 times, end sl st in top of ½” lp = 8 CH-2 sps.

2ND RND: * SC in next CH-2 sp, CH 2, work [HDC, CH 2] 4 times in next CH-2 sp [petal], rep from * 3 times, end CH 2, sl st in 1st SC = 4 petals. Fasten off.

2ND MOTIF:
Work same as 1st motif until 3 petals compl, CH 2, work HDC CH 2, HDC in last CH-2 sp, CH 1, insert hk in center of CH-2 sp of 2nd petal on 1st motif, CH 1, work HDC, CH 2 HDC in last CH-2 sp, CH 2, sl st in 1st SC. Fasten off.

Cont working & joining motifs same as 2nd motif until 12 [12-13-13] motifs are joined for lower edge of skirt.

Make 2nd strip with 11 [11-12-12] motifs.

Make 3rd strip with 10 [10-11-11] motifs.

Make 4th strip with 9 [9-10-10] motifs.

Make 5th strip with 8 [8-9-9] motifs.

1ST SOLID STRIPE:
With G hk, Ch 5, from RS of 1st stripe, work 2 SC in center CH-2 sp of top free petal on 1st motif, * CH 9, work 2 SC in center CH-2 sp of free petal on next motif, rep from * across, end CH 6, turn.

2ND ROW: SC in 2nd Ch from hk & in each CH & SC across = 133 [133-144-144] SC. CH 1, turn each row.

3RD ROW: SC in each SC across.

Rep 3rd row twice, end on RS. CH 1, turn.

6TH ROW: [DEC ROW]: SC across, dec 11 SC evenly spaced across = 122 [122-133-133] SC.

Work 2 rows even, end WS. CH 1, turn.

JOIN 2ND STRIP:
With RS of next strip facing RS of solid stripe, SC in each of 5 SC, * [insert hk under center CH-2 sp of 1st free petal on 1st motif & in next SC on solid stripe, pull yarn thru, YO & thru 2 lps on hk] twice, SC in each of next 9 SC, rep from * across, end Sc in each of last 5 SC. End.

** 2ND SOLID STRIPE:
Work same as 1st solid stripe, having 122 [122-133-133] SC on 2nd row & 111 [111-122-122] Sc on dec row.

JOIN 3RD STRIP:
Work same as 2nd strip. Rep from ** until 5 strips are joined.

Work even on 89 [89-100-100] SC of 5th solid stripe until skirt meas 19” from start or needed skirt length. End off.

FRONT:
Work same as back.

BODICE:
BACK:
1ST SIDE TAB:
Beg at lower edge, with size G hk, CH 11 [13-15-17], SC in 2nd CH from hk & in each CH across = 10 [12-14-16] SC.

Mark last row for RS, CH 1, turn each row.

Work in SC until piece meas 2”, end WS. Fasten off.

RIBBON TAB [MAKE 2]:
CH 7, SC in 2nd CH from hk & in each CH across = 6 SC.

Work even until piece meas same as 1st side tab, end WS. Fasten off.

CENTER TAB:
CH 23, SC in 2nd CH from hk & in each CH across = 22 SC.

Work even until piece meas same as 1st side tab, end WS. Fasten off.

2ND SIDE TAB:
Work same as 1st side tab; do not fasten off. CH 1, turn.

JOIN TABS:
Work from RS, SC in each of 9 [11-13-15] SC on 2nd side tab; SC in each SC on 1 ribbon tab; sk 1st SC on center tab, SC in next SC & in each SC to within 1 SC of end, sk last SC; SC in each SC on 2nd ribbon tab; sk 1st SC on side tab, SC in each SC across = 50 [54-58-62] SC.

Work in SC, inc 1 st each side of next row, then every 1” 5 times more = 62 [66-70-74] SC.

Work even until piece meas 8” [8 ½”-8 ½”-8 ¾”] from start or needed length to underarm.

Piece above last inc row should be 15 ½” [16 1/2”-17 ½”-18 ½”] wide.

Put marker on each side of last row for underarm.

SHAPE ARMHOLE:
Bind off 0 [0-1-2] sts each side once = 62 [66-68-70] sts.

Work even until armholes meas 2 ½” above underarm marker.

DIVIDE WORK:
Work across 31 [33-34-35] SC, drop yarn; join another strand of yarn, finish row = 31 [33-34-35] SC each side.

Working on both sides at once, work even until armholes meas 5 ½” [6”-6 ½”-6 ½”] above marker.

SHAPE SHOULDERS:
Bind off 1 st each arm side every row 4 times, 3 sts every row 2 [3-2-1] times, 2 [0-4-4] sts 1 [0-1-2] times, 1 st twice = 17 [18-18-18] sts each side.

FRONT:
Work same as back until joining row is compl = 50 [54-58-62] SC.

Put marker on work in center of each ribbon tab = 2 markers.

SHAPE DARTS:
Work in SC, inc 1 st each side & at each marker on next row, then every 1” 5 times more = 74 [78-82-86] SC.

Work even until piece meas 7 ½” from start.

Check gauge; piece above last inc row should meas 18 ½” [19 ½”-20 ½”-21 ½”] wide. Fasten off. Turn work.

BUSTLINE DART:
CH 7 [8-9-11], sk 1st 7 [8-9-11] SC, SC in next SC & in each SC to within last 7 [8-9-11] SC, CH 8 [9-10-12], turn.

SC in 2nd CH from hk & in each CH & SC across = 74 [78-82-86] SC.

Work even until piece meas 8 ½” [8 ½”-9”-9 ½”] from start.

Put marker on each side of last row for underarm.

SHAPE ARMHOLES:
Bind off 2 [3-4-5] sts each side of next row.

Dec 1 st each side every other row 3 times = 64 [66-68-70] SC.

Work even until armholes meas 1 ¾” [2”-2 ¼”-2 ½”] above underarm marker.

Inc 1 st each side every 4th row 3 times = 70 [72-74-76] SC.

Work even until armholes meas 5 ½” [5 ½”-6”-6 ½”] above 1st bound-off sts.

SHAPE SHOULDERS & NECK:
Bind off 1 st each side every row 4 times = 62 [64-66-68] SC.

NEXT ROW: Bind off 1st st, work across 14 [15-16-17], drop yarn, sk next 32 sts; with another strand of yarn, SC in each SC to within 1 SC of end = 14 [15-16-17] SC each side.

Dec 1 st at each neck edge every row 4 times; AT SAME TIME, bind off 3 sts each arm side every row 2 [3-2-1] times, 2 [0-4-4] sts 1 [0-1-2] times, 1 st twice. Fasten off.

FINISHING:
SKIRT:
Pin tulle to WS of skirt back along each solid stripe.

Cut tulle, leave 2” allowance on lower edge for hem & ½” on side & upper edges for seams.

With matching sewing thread, catch-stitch tulle to solid stripes.

Line front of skirt in same way.

From RS, weave side seams of solid stripes; tack free petals at side seams tog, leave 6” open at upper left side seam for zipper.

Overlap tulle seam allowance; tack to skirt & turn under seam allowance on each side of side opening.

Steam-press skirt; turn up hem allowance & sew in place.

Turn under seam allowance at top & sew in place.

BODICE:
Sew shoulder seams; sew side seams, leaving 6” opening at lower left seam for zipper.

With #00 hk, work 2 rows SC on side edges of center tab & inner edge of side tabs.

Work 1 row SC on each side edge of ribbon tabs.

Tack upper & lower edges of side & center tabs to WS of ribbon tabs for underlap.

Sew ½” bustline darts.

With #00 hk, work 8 rows SC around neck edge & keep work flat.

From RS, work 1 row SC around back opening.

Sew in neck zipper.

Join yarn at right underarm.

From RS, work 1 rnd SC around armhole edge. Join with sl st in 1st st, CH 1, turn.

NEXT ROW: * SC in each of next 2 SC, CH 3, sl st in last SC worked in, rep from * around. Join with sl st in 1st SC. Fasten off.

Work same edging around left armhole.

Sew skirt to bodice, match side seam & opening, easing in skirt.

From RS, work 2 rows SC on front edge of side opening.

Sew in zipper.

Run ribbon under belt tabs.

Make A-line underskirt of lining fabric, & leave left seam open for 6”.

Bind top with bias binding.

Make narrow hems at side opening.

Sew inside skirt to top edge.

Make narrow hem at bottom.
