Vintage 1970s Lace Wedding Dress & Bridal Cap with Veil #1298

SIZE:
Small [8-10] & Medium [12-14].

Directions are for size Small with changes for Medium in brackets.

MATERIALS:
WEDDING GOWN:
Spinnerin Sabrina Sport Weight Yarn, 50 gr Balls: 35 [38]
1 Boye Crochet Hook Size E [F]
Simplicity Pattern #7389
French Illusion [stiff net-like fabric] for Lining
Taffeta for Slip
1 yd Chiffon for Sleeves
3 ½ yds Bridal Ribbon for Skirt’s Lower Edge
Belting
1 Zipper 22”
¼” Wide Elastic
Bias Seam Tape
Hook & Eye
2 Large Snaps

CAP & VEIL:
Stiff Net Cap
Veiling Material

GAUGE/TENSION:
1 Motif = 4”x4” [4 ½”x4 ½”]

NOTE:
Experience in sewing is needed to make this bridal ensemble.

The sewing patt must be adjusted to fit crochet sections, as well as some of crochet motifs adjusted to fit sewing patt.

If you are inexperienced in sewing, you may like to work with a seamstress to help you compl your gown successfully.

1ST MOTIF:
With E [F] hk, CH 12.

1ST ROW: DC in 6th CH from hk, [CH 1, sk 1 CH, DC in next CH] 3 times. CH 4, turn, 4 M counting TCH.

2ND ROW: Sk 1st DC, [CH-4 count as 1st DC & CH-1], DC in next DC, [CH 1, DC in next DC] 2 times, CH 1, DC in 3rd CH of TCH. CH 4, turn.

3RD & 4TH ROWS: Rep 2nd row, end 4th row CH 1, DO NOT TURN.

1ST RND: 3 SC in side of corner M [last SC worked], * [2 SC in side of next M] 2 times, 6 SC in next corner M *; rep bet *s 2 times, [2 SC in side of next M] 2 times, 3 SC in side of 1st corner M, join with sl st to 1st SC. CH 1, DO NOT TURN.

2ND RND-1ST ROW: SC in 1st 5 SC, CH 4, sl st in 1st CH, CH 5, sl  st in same sp as CH-4, CH-4, sl st in same sp as 1st CH-4, SC in next 5 SC, CH 15, turn, join with sl st to 1st SC at beg of 1st row of 2nd rnd. CH 1, turn.

2ND ROW: Rnd CH-15, work 3 SC, CH 3, sl st in 1st CH [picot=P], 2 SC, P, SC, working rnd CH-15 & thru center of CH-5 lp of 1st row work 1 SC, rnd CH-15 work 1 SC, P, 2 SC, P, 3 SC, join with sl st to side of last SC of 1st row.

Rep 1st & 2nd rows across each of 3 rem sides of motif. Fasten off.

2ND MOTIF:
Work same as 1st motif to first 2nd row of 2nd rnd.

2ND ROW: Rnd CH-15, work 3 SC, P, 2 SC, P, 1 SC, work rnd CH-15 & thru center of CH-5 lp work 1 SC, rnd CH-15 work 1 SC, CH 2, release hk, hold motifs back to back & insert hk thru corres P on 1st motif, pick up & draw last CH worked from 2nd motif thru, CH 1, sl st in 1st CH of 2nd motif – called joining P, rnd CH-15 of 2nd motif work 2 SC, [joining P], 3 SC, join with sl st to side of last SC of 1st row. Work 1st row along next side edge of 2nd motif.
2ND ROW: Rnd CH-15 work 3 SC, joining P, 2 SC, joining P, 1 SC, compl 2nd motif as 1st motif.

SKIRT [275 MOTIFS]:
Be sure to leave an opening of 2 motifs long at center back [zipper opening], make & join 25 motifs widthwise & 11 motifs lengthwise following lower part of 1st diagram for joining positions.

NOTE:
Inc or dec # of motifs joinged lengthwise to adjust length of skirt.

TOP [28 MOTIFS]:
Be sure to leave center back open for zipper, make & join motifs following 1st diagram for placement & joining positions. DO NOT JOIN shoulders.

CAP:
Make 2 full motifs & 4 motifs with 1st & 2nd rows of 2nd rnd worked over 2 sides of motifs only.

Make & join according to 2nd diagram.

CUFFS [MAKE 2]:
Make & join 2 motifs in circle.

Finish 1 edge same as top – lower border – 1st row, [see below].

FINISHING:
SKIRT LOWER BORDER:
1ST ROW: [Meas approx 2”] From RS join yarn to 1st P of motif at lower center back, SC in P, * CH 2, SC in next P, CH 7, SC in next P, CH 2, SC in next P, CH 7, SC in 1st P of next motif; rep from * rnd end last rep CH 7, join with sl st to top of 1st SC. CH 1, turn.

2ND ROW: SC in each SC & CH to end. CH 4, turn.

3RD ROW: Sk 1st 2 SC [CH-4 counts as 1st DC & CH-1], DC in next SC, CH 1, sk 1 SC, * DC in next SC, CH 1, sk 1 SC; rep from * rnd, join with sl st to 3rd CH of TCH. CH 1, turn.

4TH – 9TH ROWS: Rep 2nd & 3rd rows 3 times, end 9th row, CH 1, turn.

10TH ROW: SC in 1st DC, P in CH-1, * SC in next DC, P in CH-1; rep from * rnd, join. Fasten off.

SKIRT WAISTBAND:
1ST ROW: From RS, join yarn to 1st SC at top center back, SC in same P, * CH 1, SC in next P; rep from * to end. CH 1, turn.

2ND ROW: Be sure to dec SCs as needed to achieve needed waist size, work 1 row SC. Fasten off.

TOP:
LOWER BORDER:
1ST ROW: From RS, join yarn to 1st P at lower center back, SC in same P, * CH 1, SC in next P, CH 5, Sc in next P, CH 1, SC in next P, CH 5, Sc in 1st P of next motif; rep from * end last rep, SC in last P of last motif. CH 1, turn.

2ND & 3RD ROWS: Rep 2nd & 3rd rows of skirt lower border. End 3rd row, fasten off.

FABRIC SKIRT:
Using patt pieces K, L & M, cut lining from illusion & slip from taffeta.

Assemble slip & lining, following printed patt directions for 1st view – unit 8A.

With WS tog [net-like illusion lies next to crochet skirt], gather tops of slip & lining as 1, adjusting to needed fullness using crochet skirt as guide.

Secure gathers with bias seam tape sewn to inside of slip-lining [next to taffeta slip].

FABRIC BODICE:
Pin side seams of tissue patt for bodice front & back, view 5 pieces P & R.

Match armhole curves, adjust patt to meas 5/8” below lower crochet bodice edge. [Approx 1” added to lower bodice patt edge].

Assemble bodice front, back slip & lining following printed patt directions for View 5 – Units 1, 2 & 3.

SLEEVES:
Use patt piece AX & chiffon, cut out sleeves using casing line as lower cutting edge.

Stitch underarm seam. Finish seam.

At lower edge turn up 3/8” casing.

Cut ¼” elastic to desired wrist meas + ½”.

Draw elastic thru sleeve casing & secure.

Tack finished edge of crochet cuff to lower sleeve edge.
Set in sleeves following printed patt directions for 1st view – unit 7.

BODICE JOINING:
Sew fabric bodice to fabric skirt.

Set in zipper.

Use waistline seam as placement line, hand sew crochet skirt to fabric skirt waistline.

Tack crochet skirt around zipper opening.

Join shoulder seams of crochet bodice following 2nd diagram.

With WS tog, hand sew crochet bodice to fabric dress around neckline & center back zipper opening.

Tack crochet bodice at shoulder seams & down front armhole edge for approx 4”.

LOWER EDGES:
Turn up & hem taffeta slip to same length as crochet skirt to beg of border.

Finish illusion with bridal ribbon to same length as taffeta.

BELT:
Cut belting to needed waist meas + 2”.

Cover with 1 layer each of illusion then chiffon.

Secure with snaps to needed waist meas, secure 2” overlap with hook & eye.

BOW:
With crochet hk work CH approx 70” long.

SC in 2nd CH & in each CH to end. Fasten off.

Form bow with 7 lps & secure at center front of belt as shown in photo.

Gathering small bits of illusion, sew “flower” to each end of CH & at center of bow.

CAP:
LINING:
Have 1 layer of illusion over 1 layer of taffeta & cover purchased bridal cap [both inside & outside], turning under raw edges at cap’s lower edge.

Following 2nd diagram, join yarn to pint A, CH 1, Sc in same sp.

Work in each st & CH along lower edge bet A & B points, work HDCs, DCs & TRCs to make lower edge lie evenly along cap’s lower edge. Fasten off.

Tack this edge to lower edge of cap & tack P edge to outer edge of cap.

VEIL:
LOWER PIECE:
From illusion cut 2 rectangles approx 34” x 50”.

Along 1 short edge, gather dbl thickness of illusion to lower cap edge.

Tack along this edge, & keep gathers even.

UPPER VEIL:
From illusion cut 2 rectangles, approx 4 yds x 90” [or width of fabric].

Fold in half & run gathering thread along 3 raw edges.

Be sure gathers are evenly distributed, tack along lower edge of cap over lower piece.
