Vintage 1970s Horizontal Cabled Shrug #1299

SIZE:
10 -18

MATERIALS:
Coats & Clarks Red Heart Knitting Worsted, 4 Ply Skeins: 11 oz
1 Pair Knitting Needles #10

GAUGE/TENSION:
14 Sts [1 patt] = 3”
5 Rows = 1”

SHRUG:
Start at center back & cast on 53 sts.

1ST ROW [RS]: P3, * K4, P3; rep from * to last 8 sts, K8.

2ND ROW: K11, * YO, P4, K3, P4, K3; rep from * across.

3RD ROW: P3, * K4, P3, drop next YO & sl next st to holder & hold in front, sl next 2 sts to another holder & hold in back, K next st, drop next YO then K 2 sts from back holder, K st from front holder [cable twist made], P3; rep from * to last 8 sts, K8.

4TH ROW: K11, * P4, K3; rep from * across.

5TH ROW: Rep 1st row.

6TH ROW: K11, * P4, K3, YO, P4, YO, K3; rep from * across.

7TH ROW: P3, * cable twist, P3, K4, P3; rep from * to last 8 sts, K8.

8TH ROW: Rep 4th row.

Rep these 8 rows for patt.

Work even until approx 7 ½” from beg, end with patt 4th or 8th row.

At end of last row cast on 19 sts for sleeve.

SLEEVE:
1ST ROW: K5 loosely, compl 5th or 1st row in patt.

Keep 5 sts at sleeve edge & 8 sts at opp edge in garter st, cont in patt until aprox 13 ½” from cast-on sleeve sts, end with patt 4th or 8th row.

NEXT ROW: Start at sleeve edge, loosely bind off 19 sts, finish row in patt.

Work in patt on 53 sts until approx 15” from bound-off sts of sleeve, end with patt 4th or 8th row.

At end of last row, cast on 19 sts for other sleeve & work same as 1st sleeve.

Work even on 53 until 7 ½” from bound-pff sts of 2nd sleeve, end with patt 8th row. Bind off.

FINISHING:
Sew 53 cast-on sts to 53 bound-off sts & match patts for lower center back seam.

Lay out dbl piece with seam in center of 15” area bet sleeves; sleeves are now folded in half.

Match patts, & sew cast-on edge to bound-off edge of each sleeve.

Allow for stretch bet shoulders, & sew both 15” edges bet sleeves tog.

This last seam & lower back seam form T at center back, when shrug is worn.

When worn, garter st edge will roll back to form collar.
