1970s Girl’s Cape with Open-Work Border #C116

SIZE:
2, 4, 6, 8, 10 & 12
Directions are for size 2 with changes for larger sizes in brackets.

NOTE:
The cape may be made longer with an extra skein. It is worked from the neck down. 

Arm openings may be omitted by skipping directions for them, but be sure to work all increases as shown.
MATERIALS:
Brunswick Germantown Knitting Worsted, or Windrush, 4 oz Skeins: 2 [2-3-3-3-4]
1 Pair Knitting Needles #5 for Collar & Arm Opening Bands
1 Circular 29” Knitting Needle #8
1 Aluminum Crochet Hook #2/C
Buttons
GAUGE/TENSION:
7 Sts = 1” ; 6 Rows = 1”
CAPE:
With larger needles cast on 24 [26-28-30-32-34] sts.
Inc in 1st st, K1 [1-1-2-2-3] sts, inc in next st, put marker, inc in next st, K next 4 [4-5-5-6-6] sts, inc in next st, put marker, inc in next st, K next 4 [6-6-6-6-6] sts, inc in next st, put marker, inc in next st, K next 4 [4-5-5-6-6] sts, inc in next st, put marker, inc in next st, K 1 [1-1-2-2-3] sts, inc in last st = 10 incs & 34 [36-38-40-42-44] sts.
NEXT ROW. P.
NEXT ROW: Inc 1 st each end of needle, & before & after each marker = 44 [46-48-50-52-54] sts.
NEXT ROW: Cast on 2 sts, P across row.
NEXT ROW: Cast on 2 sts, then work across these sts, inc in 1stt st, put marker, K across to last st, put marker, inc in last st = 50 [52-54-56-58-60] sts.
Cast on 6 sts at beg of next row, then P across row.
PATTERN:
Worked on 7 sts. TBL = thru back lp
1ST ROW & ALL WS ROWS: P.
2ND ROW: K1, K2 tog, YO, K1, YO, K2 tog TBL, K1.
4TH ROW: K2 tog, YO, K3, YO, K2 tog TBL.
6TH ROW: K2, YO, sl 1, K2 tog, psso, YO, K2.
NEXT ROW: Cast on 6 sts, then work across these sts, work 2nd row patt on 1st 7 sts, then work across row, inc 1 st each side of each marker, & up to last 7 sts, work 2nd row of patt on last 7 sts = 74 [76-78-80-82-84] sts.
Now rep 6 rows of patt on 1st & last 7 sts, inc 1 st each side of each marker every 4th row 3 [3-4-5-6-6] times, then every 6th row 7 [8-8-9-9-10] times = 194 [208-222-248-262-276] sts. AT SAME TIME when cape meas [straight down front edge] 7” [7 ½”-8”-8 ½”-9”-9 ½”]
SHAPE ARM OPENINGS:
Since heights & arm lengths vary so much, check to see that this is best point for your arm opening.
Beg on K side, work across to 1 st beyond 1st marker, with another skein work to within 1 st of last marker, with another skein work to end.
Use 3 skeins of yarn & work each section separately [remember incs], compl 26 [26-28-28-30-30] rows.
Now use only 1 skein, work across all sts, join at bottom of openings.
When cap meas [down center back] 13 ½” [14 ½”-15”-16”-17”-18”], or needed length before fringe, bind off.
ARM OPENING BANDS:
With smaller needles, pick up & K along outside edge [edge furthest from front edges] 26 [26-28-28-30-30] sts.
Work K1, P1 ribbing for 7 rows.
Bind off in ribbing patt.
SC along inside edge of opening.
Bring ribbing band forward & sl st each end in place as shown.
FRONTBANDS:
Work 5 rows SC up each front, work button holes on RS in 3rd row.
Work 1st buttonhole at top, sp others approx 2” apart.
Make 4 or 5 buttonholes as follows: CH 2, sk 2 SC of prev row, then in next row work 2 SC in each buttonhole.
COLLAR:
With smaller needles & WS facing, pick up & K around neck edge 60 [60-62-62-64-66] sts, beg & end approx 1” from edge of front bands.
K across next row, inc 40 sts evenly spaced across row.
Now work K1, P1 ribbing on 100 [100-102-102-104-106] sts for 3”
Bind off in ribbing patt.
Sew buttons on band to corres to buttonholes.
FRINGE:
Knot 2 – 10” strands of yarn in every other st as shown around bottom edge.
