Vintage 1970s Girl’s Crocheted Cape #C114
SIZE: 
2, 4, 6, 8, 10 & 12
Directions are for size 2 with changes for larger sizes in brackets.

NOTE:
The cape may be made longer with an extra skein. It is worked from the neck down. Arm openings may be omitted by skipping directions for them, but be sure to work all increases as shown.
MATERIALS:
Brunswick Germantown Knitting Worsted, or Windrush, 4 oz Skeins: 2 [2-3-3-4-4]
1 Aluminum Crochet Hook #4/E
GAUGE/TENSION:
7 DC = 2” ; 2 Rows = 1”
NOTE:
All incs are made in DC sections. The space referred to is the one created by CH 1 of [DC, CH 1, DC] of previous row.
CAPE:
CH loosely 48 [48-48-58-58-58] sts, SC in 2nd st from Hk, SC across to end. CH 3.
1ST ROW: DC in each of next 1 [1-2-2-2-2] sts, * CH 1, sk 1 st, [DC, CH 1, DC] all in next st, CH 1, sk 1 st, DC in each of next 2 [2-3-3-3-3] sts; rep from * across row, end CH 3. = 9 openwork sections & 10 DC sections.
2ND ROW: DC 2 [2-3-3-3-3] over 1 [1-2-2-2-2] DC of prev row, * CH 1, sk 1 st, [DC, CH 1, DC] in sp of prev row, CH 1, sk 1 st, work 3 [3-4-4-4-4] DC over 2 [2-3-3-3-3] DC of prev row; rep from * across, end CH 3.
Cont in same way, inc 1 st in each DC section every row until there are 4 [5-6-7-7-8] DC in each DC section.
Now keep to patt, inc 1 st in each DC section EVERY OTHER row until there are 9 [10-12-13-15-17] DC in each section. AT SAME TIME when piece meas down front edge 7” [7 ½”-8”-8 ½”-9”-9 ½”] or needed length to arm opening.
SHAPE ARM OPENING:
Work across 1st DC section, on across openwork, end with DC in each of 1st 3 DC after open-work.
Turn, CH 3. DC in each of 2 DC of prev row, work patt back to beg.
Rep last 2 rows until there are 9 [9-10-10-11-11] rows in this section.
With 2nd skein & beg at top of opening, CH 3, & work in patt across to within 3 DC of last openwork, turn & CH 3 each time, work patt on these sts until this section is same length as 1st section.
Attach yarn at top of rem section & work to match 1st section.
Work even in patt across all sts until cape meas 13 ½” [15”-17”-19”-21”-23”] or needed length.
ARM OPENING BANDS:
Work 5 rows SC along outside edge of opening, then work scallop trim. See below.
Work 1 row SC along inside edge.
Bring band forward over opening & sl st each end in place as shown.
FRONTS:
Work 5 rows SC up each front, work button holes on RS in 3rd row.
Work 1st buttonhole approx 1 ½” from top, as top hole will be in neckband.
Make 4 or 5 buttonholes as follows: CH 2, sk 2 SC of prev row, then in next row work 2 SC in each buttonhole.
NECKBAND:
Work 5 rows SC around neck edge, make buttonhole in 3rd row on RS to corres to others.
Sew buttons on band to match buttonholes.
SCALLOP TRIM:
Attach yarn & # CH 3, DC in same st, sk 2 sts, SC in next st; rep from * across row.
On other than SC edges, sk just enough to make scallops lay flat & even.
