1970s Beribboned Lace Evening Gown #1291

This esquisite long dress is beautifully bare at top for elegant evenings. The wide-flaring empire skirt is laced with cool green ribbon. Alluring halter top has seed-stitch bands that extend to back for criss-cross straps, leaving the sides bare.

SIZE:
Small [8-10], Medium [12-14] & Large [16].
Directions are for size Small with changes for Medium & Large in brackets.

MATERIALS:
Knitting Worsted, 4 Ply, 4 oz Skeins: 6 [7-8]
1 Pair 14” Knitting Needles #8
1 Circular 29” Knitting Needle #10
16 yds Green Grosgrain Ribbon 2” Wide
2 yds White Grosgrain Ribbon 1 ¼” Wide
2 Pair Heavy Duty Snap Fasteners
1 Hook & Eye
1 Skirt Zipper 6”
Bra Cups
Matching Sewing Thread

MEASUREMENTS:
Body Bust = 31 ½” – 32 ½” [34”-36”; 38”]

GAUGE/TENSION:
Stockinette St [ST ST] on #10 Needle:
4 Sts = 1”; 6 Rows = 1”
Stockinette St [ST ST] on #8 Needle:
5 Sts = 1”; 7 Rows = 1”

NOTE:
Skirt is worked from waistline to lower edge.

DRESS: SKIRT:
With #10 needles, beg at high waistline of back & front, cast on 190 [200-210] sts.
DO NOT join.

Work back & forth as follows:
1ST ROW: [WS]: P.

2ND ROW: [EYELET ROW]: K1, * wrap yarn once around needle, K2 tog, rep from * around, end K1.

3RD ROW: P3 [last st is worked in 1st wrap of prev row], * drop next wrap, P2 [last st is worked in 1st wrap of prev row], rep from * across, end st rep P1.

Work in ST ST [K1 row, P1 row] for 20 rows, end P row.

Piece should meas 47 ½” [50”-52 ½”] wide.

Rep 2nd & 3rd rows.

Work in ST ST for 11 rows, end K row.

Join; put & keep marker on needle bet last & 1st sts of rnd.

Work around in ST ST for rnds.

PATTERN: EYELET RND:
1ST RND: * Wrap yarn once around needle, K2 tog, rep from * around.

2ND RND: K around, drop 2nd wrap. K 16 rnds.

Rep 1st & 2nd eyelet rnds. K 14 rnds.

** Rep 1st & 2nd eyelet rnds. K 12 rnds.

Rep 1st & 2nd eyelet rnds. K 2 rnds, inc 10 sts evenly spaced around, K 12 rnds.

Rep from ** until piece meas approx 40” from start or ½” less than desired skirt length, end 2nd eyelet rnd.

Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 2 rnds.

Bind off in K same tension as sts.

TOP: FRONT [MAKE 2]:
Beg at lower edge with #8 needles, cast on 36 [38-42] sts.

1ST ROW [RS]: Sl 1, [K1, P1] 3 times [seed st border] K to last 7 sts, [P1, K1] 3 times, P1 [seed st border].

2ND ROW: Sl 1, [K1, P1] 3 times, P to last 7 sts, [P1, K1] 3 times, P1.

Rep 1st & 2nd rows 4 times, end WS.

Piece is 7” [7 ½”-8 ½”] wide.

NEXT ROW [DEC ROW]: Work 1st 7 sts, K2 tog, K to last 9 sts, K2 tog thru back lps, work last 7 sts = 2 sts dec.

Rep DEC row every 6th row once, every 4th row 3 times, every other row 5 [6-8] times = 16 sts.

Work 1 row even, end WS.

NEXT ROW: Work across 6 sts, [K2 tog] twice, work across last 6 sts = 14 sts.

NEXT ROW: Sl 1, [K2 tog, P2 tog] 3 times, P1 = 8 sts.

STRAP: 
NEXT ROW: Sl 1, [P1, K1] 3 times, P1.

NEXT ROW: Sl 1, [K1, P1] 3 times, P1.

Rep last 2 rows until strap meas 19” [20”-22”] from start. Fasten off.

FINISHING:
Cut green & white ribbon ½” longer than high waistline meas.

Thread green ribbon thru 1st eyelet row & sew ends securely to edge of skirt.

Sew white ribbon to WS of skirt & gather skirt evenly to fit.

Sew zipper in back opening ½” below upper edge.

Sew hook & eye to upper edge.

Face straps with white grosgrain ribbon.

Face seed st border of each top with white grosgrain ribbon.

Tack bra cups in place.

Divide upper edge of skirt in half, with zipper at center back & mark sides.

Weave tops tog for 1” above lower edge.

Pin top to waistline of skirt with edges of top 1” from each side marker.

Weave top to skirt securely, & gathering top to fit.

Sew 2 snaps to each end of straps & inner edge of back waistline.

Thread green ribbon thru every other eyelet rnd.

Make flat green bows & sew 1 bow to each ribbon down center front of skirt as shown.

Sew bow with 2 streamers to back waistline.
