Vintage 1970 Baby’s Flame Frock #1349

Flame Frock for storybook misses, below. Pert little ribbed pleats set off this short-sleeved, tasselled knit. lt's a free-'n-easy design for active little girls who nevertheless like to be fashion plates.
MATERIALS:
5 (6) Balls: Main Color (MC), 1 Ball Contrast Color (CC) Sirdar Fontein Crepe
1 Pair Each #10, #11, & #12 Needles
5 Small Buttons
1 Cable Needle 
MEASUREMENTS:
Chest  = 22’-23” (24”-25”)
Length = 15” (16”)
TENSION:
7½ sts = 1” 
BACK:
Use #10 needles & CC, cast on 182 (194) sts.
1ST ROW: K 1, * k 6, p 6, rep from * to last st, k 1.
Rep this row for rib.
Cont, in rib, work 3 more rows CC, 2 rows MC, 2 rows CC, 2 rows MC, 2 rows CC. Break off CC & cont, in rib & MC until work meas 3½” (4”) from beg.
NEXT ROW: K 1, * sl next 6 sts onto cable needle & place in front of next 6 sts on left-hand needle, k tog 1 st from each needle 6 times, rep from * to last st, k 1: 92 (98) sts.
Beg p row cont, in st st until work meas 10½” (11”) from beg, end with p row. 
SHAPE ARMHOLES:
Cast off 8 (9) sts beg of next 2 rows, then cont, straight until armholes meas 2½”
(3”), end with p row. ** 
DIVIDE FOR BACK OPENING:
NEXT ROW: K 38 (40) turn, cast on 2 sts. 
NEXT ROW: K 4, p to end.

Cont on these sts only, work 4 sts in garter st at opening until armhole is 4” (5”) from beg, end p row. 
SHAPE SHOULDER:
Cast off 10 sts at beg of next row.
Work 1 row, cast off 8 (10) sts beg foll row.
Work 1 row, cast off rem sts. 
Mark place of 2 buttons, one ½” from bottom, 2nd ½” from top of border. 
Join MC at opening edge of rem sts, cast on 2 sts & work to corres, work 2 buttonholes in garter st border as follows: 
BUTTONHOLE ROW:
K 2, y fwd, k 2 tog, k to end.

FRONT:
Work as back to **. 
SHAPE NECK:
NEXT ROW: K 30 (31), cast off centre 16 (18) sts, k to end. Cont on last set of sts, dec 1 st at neck edge of every row until 18 (20) sts.
Cont straight until armhole meas same as back, end at armhole edge. 
SHAPE SHOULDER:
Cast off 10 sts at beg of next row.
Work 1 row. Cast off.
Rejoin yarn to rem sts & work to corres, reverse shaping. 
SLEEVES:
Use #11 needles & CC, cast on 66 ( 70) sts & work 2 rows in k 1, p 1 rib, then 4 rows in rib in MC, & 2 rows in CC.
Break off CC, change to #10 needles & cont, in st st & MC inc 1 st each end of next row, then cont, straight until sleeve meas 2” from beg.
Place marker each end of row, then work further 10 (12) rows straight. 
SHAPE TOP:
Cast off 10 (11) sts at beg of next 4 rows. Cast off.

NECKBAND:
Use fine back st, join shoulder seams.

With #12 needles, CC, right side facing, & beg at back opening, pick up & k 22 sts across left back neck, 18 sts down side neck, 16 (18) sts from front neck, 18 sts up other side neck, & 22 sts across back neck: 96 (98) sts.
Work 2 rows k 1, p 1 rib on these sts, change to MC & rib 4 rows, work buttonhole on 4th row thus: K 1, p 1, k 1, y fwd k 2 tog, rib to end.
Work 2 more rows in rib in CC, then cast off loosely in rib. 
BELT:
Use #11 needles & MC, cast on 8 sts & work approx 24” (26”) in k 1, p 1 rib. 
BUTTONHOLE ROW: Rib 4, y fwd, k 2 tog, rib to end.

Work 6 rows, then work further buttonhole.

Work 2 rows, then dec 1 st each end of .every row until 2 sts, k 2 tog, fasten off. 
FINISHING:
Press garment, omit ribbing.

Fit sleeves to armholes & st in place, then join side & sleeve seams.

Sew on buttons to corres with buttonholes.

Stitch belt to front & at centre bark.

Make small plait of MC & attach to centre front neck, tying in bow.
