Vintage 1960s Lovely Lace
Sheath Dress #519
A clever woman quickly
& very easily crochets this charming sheath in a delightful lace pattern,
perfect for pastels, sophisticated in black or white for bridal…a season-spanning, wardrobe
favorite! This dress can easily be adapted to a floor-length gown

Directions
are for size 10.
Changes
for sizes 12, 14 & 16 are in brackets.
MATERIALS:
Diamond
Swiss Cote d’Azur, 11 [12, 13, 14] balls

½ yds Lining Material

Crochet Hook
GAUGE:
Each
strip is 2 ½” wide.
Dress is worked in strips then sewn together.
PATTERN: BOTTOM WHEEL:
Ch 10, sl st in first ch to form ring.
1ST
RND: Ch 4, yo, insert hook in ring &
draw up ¼” lp, [over & thru 2 lps on hook] twice--long dc made, work 19
more long dc in ring, sl st to top of starting ch-4, sl st in sp bet ch-4 &
long dc. Ch 5, turn.
2ND
RND: * Long dc in next sp, ch 1; rep
from *, end ch 1, sl st in 4th st of ch-5 [21 sps]. Ch 1, turn.
3RD
RND: Work sc, ch 1 & sc in first sp,
group made, * work group in next sp; rep from * around, sl st in first sc, sl
st in center of next group. This
completes bottom wheel. Do not end off.
1ST
FAN: Ch 7, turn, sk 1 group, sl st in
center of next group, ch 4, turn.
1ST
ROW: Work 15 long dc under ch-7 lp, ch
5, turn.
2ND
ROW: Dc in sp bet first 2 dc, * ch 1, dc
in next sp; rep from *, end ch 1, dc in 4th st of ch-5 [15 sps], sk
next group of wheel, sl st in center of next group, ch 1, turn.
3RD
ROW: Work group in 15 sps, sk next group
of wheel, sl st in center of next group, end off. This completes first fan.
2ND
FAN: From wrong side, attach yarn to
center of 7th group from end of prev fan. Work same as first fan.
Rep
2nd fan for patt.
Make
9 [10, 11, 12] strips with 18 fans each, 4 strips with 20 fans each & 2
strips with 12 fans each.
FINISHING:
Sewing
center sections of adjacent fans tog for approx ½”, join 4 [5, 5, 6] strips of
18 fans for center back section & 5 [5, 6, 6] strips of same length for
center front section.
Starting
at bottom, sew one strip to 20 fans at each side of front & back for
shoulders.
Starting
at bottom, sew one 12 fan strip bet front & back sections at each side,
then sew tog 5 fans at top of front & back, joining center of top of short
side sections to first joining of side seams of top, 3 fans rem free for
armholes.
Sew
tops of 2 long strips tog for each shoulder.
CORD:
Cut
4 strands each 7 [7 ½, 8, 8 ½] yds long.
Twist
tog tightly then double & allow strands to twist around each other.
Make
another cord same, then twist both cords around each other & knot ends tog
approx 3” from each end.
Trim
ends to form tassels.
Draw
cord thru lace at waistline.
Make
fabric lining & insert, sewing to dress around neck & armholes.
EDGING: Make ch long enough to fit loosely around
armhole.
1ST
ROW: Sc in 2nd ch from hook,
sk 2 ch, * 7 dc in next ch, sk 2 ch, sc in next ch, sk 2 ch; rep from * until
edging fits armhole. Fasten off.
Sew
edging in place.
Make
same edging for neck.
ENJOY!
