1935 Lace Evening Gown with Large Collar #501

Dinner at eight & no guest more perfectly gowned than the clever woman who fashioned this ensemble of lustrous, black Velveen.  A simple crocheted pattern works into a lacy fabric with slenderizing lines & formal dignity, suitable for any evening event.  stylish design, sophisticated & smart…a season-spanning, wardrobe favorite…travel ready & perfect for many occasions!

SIZE: 
38      [Size may be increased by changing to a larger sized hook.]

MATERIALS: 
Minerva Velveen, black 14 balls
#5 Steel Crochet Hook

MEASUREMENTS:            
Bust:  Front, 20”; 
Back 18”. 
Underarm:  Front, 10”;  Back 9”.   
Skirt:  Waist, 32”;  Hips, 40”.

BLOUSE: 
BACK:  Ch 140 sts to meas 16” & start patt as follows:

1ST ROW:  1 Sc in 2nd ch, * draw up loop about 3/8” in length, draw yarn thru loop, work 1 sc in back thread of loop, sk 2 ch, 1 sc in next st, rep from * across row [46 loops].  Ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  * Draw up loop about 3/8” in length, draw yarn thru loop, work 1 sc in back thread of loop, work 1 sc in back loop, 1 sc in next loop of prev row, work over 2 threads, rep from * across row [46 loops].  Ch 1, turn.

Rep 2nd row thru out dress.  Work even for 13 rows. 

Inc 1 loop in every 12th loop across row [49 loops]. 

Incs are made by working 1 loop over loop of prev row, 1 loop in sc 7 1 loop in next loop as usual.

Work 13 rows even. 

Inc in every 10th loop across row 4 times [53 loops]. 

Work 8 rows even. 

On next row, work across 27 loops, turn & work to armhole.  

On next row, dec 1 loop at neck edge. 

Dec 3 loops at armhole on next row [23 loops]. 

Dec 1 loop at end of next 6 rows [17 loops]. 

Now work armhole straight, dec 1 loop every other row at neck edge until 12 loops are left. 

Work 7 rows even.  Fasten off. 

Join yarn at center of back & work to correspond with other side.

FRONT:  Ch 146 sts to meas 17”. 

Work in patt same as back [48 loops]. 

Work 10 rows even. 

Inc in every 12th loop across row 3 times [51 loops]. 

Work 12 rows even. 

Inc in every 10th loop across row 4 times [55 loops]. 

Work 10 rows even. 

Inc in every 9th loop across row 5 times [60 loops]. 

Work 7 rows even. 

Dec 3 loops each side for armhole. 

Then dec 1 loop at end of next 6 rows [48 loops]. 

On next row, work 24 loops, end with dc instead of sc, turn as usual. 

Dec 1 loop at neck edge 2 times, then dec 1 loop at underarm. 

Dec 1 loop every row at neck edge until there are 17 loops in row. 

Then dec 1 loop at neck edge every other row until 12 loops rem. 

Work 8 rows even.  Fasten off. 
Join yarn at center of front & work to correspond with other side.

COLLAR: 
Start at point [center back of collar], ch 4, work 1 loop & 1 sc in first ch, work 2 loops to turn. 

1 Sc in 3rd loop from hook [loop of 1st row], work one loop & 1 sc in next ch [4th ch at start]. 

Always work 2 loops to turn, inc 1 loop at end of each row, by working last sc bet 2 loops of prev row, until there are 48 loops across row. 

Turn as before & work across 24 loops [center of collar]. 

Still inc at outer edge & dec 1 loop every other row at inner edge of collar. 

Cont same for 30 rows, 24 loops in last row. 

Work outer edge straight to end of collar; at same time, dec 2 times every other row at inner edge. 

Work 12 rows even; dec 1 loop at inner edge. 

Work 10 rows even, dec 1 loop at inner edge. 

Work 5 rows even, dec 1 loop at inner edge. 

Then dec 1 loop every 4th row at inner edge until there are 12 loops left. 

Work even for 9 ½”.  Fasten off. 

Work other side of collar to correspond. 

Sew underarm seams, ease in fullness of fronts toward underarm. 

Work beading [elastic casing] around bottom of blouse. 

Sew collar to back opening. 

Work 1 row of 2 loops & 1 sc all around edge of collar, neck & armholes.

SKIRT:  [WORKED IN 3 GORES];  Ch 98 & work in patt same as back of blouse [32 loops]. 

Work 2” even. 

On next row inc in 7th loop & every 5th loop thereafter 3 times [36 loops]. 

Work 2” even. 

Inc in every 6th loop 5 times [41 loops]. 

Work 2” even.

Inc in every 6th loop 6 times [47 loops]. 

Work 3” even.

Inc 1 loop every 8th loop 5 times [52 loops]. 

Work 3” even.

Inc 1 loop every 7th loop 6 times [58 loops]. 

Work 3” even.

Inc 1 loop every 10th loop 5 times [63 loops]. 

Work 3” even.

Inc 1 loop every 7th loop 8 times [71 loops]. 

Work 4” even.

Inc 1 loop every 9th loop 7 times [78 loops]. 

Work 4” even.

Inc 1 loop every 8th loop 8 times [86 loops]. 

Work 6” even [32“] or desired length.  Fasten off. 

This gore blocks to 37” length. 

Work 2 other gores. 

Sew seams, draw thread taut to prevent seams from sagging. 

Work beading [casing] at top for elastic.
