Vintage 1959 Mohair Shrug Sweater Bolero #351

These directions are for size 12. 
Changes for sizes 14, 16 & 18 are in brackets.

MATERIALS:
Bernat Mohair spun [1 oz pull skeins - 8 [8, 9, 9], or
Bernat Astrakhan [2 oz skeins] - 5 [5, 6, 6]
1 Pair each #5 & #8 Knitting Needles
1 Small Button

GAUGE: 
4 sts = 1”;    
6 rows = 1”

NOTE: 
Garment is worked in stockinette st. 
Use purl side for right side.

BACK: 
Using #5 needles, cast on 60 [64, 68, 72] sts. 

K 1, p 1 in ribbing for 1 ½”. 

Change to #8 needles & work in stockinette st, inc 1 st each end of needle every ¾” 5 times. 

Work even on 70 [74, 78, 82] sts until piece measures 6 ½” [6 ½”, 7”, 7”].

SHAPE ARMHOLES: 
At beg of each of next 2 rows bind off 5 sts. 

Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 4 times. 

Work even on 52 [56, 60, 64] sts until armholes measure 7 ½” [7 ¾”, 8”, 8 ¼”].

SHAPE SHOULDERS: 
At beg of each of next 2 rows bind off 8 [9, 10, 11] sts.  

At beg of each of next 2 rows bind off 9 [10, 10, 11] sts. 

Bind off remaining 18 [18, 20, 20] sts.

LEFT FRONT: 
Using #8 needles, cast on 13 [15, 17, 19] sts. 

P 1 row. 

Mark end of this row for front edge. 

On next row inc 1 st at front edge & k to end of row. 

Continue in stockinette st, inc 1 st at front edge EVERY ROW 13 times more, & AT THE SAME TIME, inc 1 st at arm edge every ¾” 5 times. 

Work even on 32 [34, 36, 38] sts until piece measures 5” [5”, 5 ½”, 5 ½”].

SHAPE ARMHOLE: 
At arm edge bind off 5 sts. 

Dec 1 st at same edge every other row 4 times. 

Work even on 23 [25, 27, 29] sts until armhole measures 6 ¼” [6 ½”, 6 ¾”, 7”].

SHAPE NECK: 
At front edge bind off 4 sts, work to end of row. 

Dec 1 st at neck edge EVERY ROW 2 [2, 3, 3] times. 

Work even on 17 [19, 20, 22] sts until armhole measures 7 ½” [7 ¾”, 8”, 8 ¼”].

SHAPE SHOULDER: 
At arm edge bind off 8 [9, 10, 11] sts once & 9 [10, 10, 11] sts once.

FRONT RIBBING: 
Using #5 needles, with purl side facing you pick up 82 [84, 88, 92] sts around front & lower edge. 

K 1, p 1, in ribbing for 1 ½”. 

Bind off in ribbing.

RIGHT FRONT & RIGHT FRONT RIBBING: 
Work to correspond to left front & left front ribbing, reversing all shaping.

SLEEVES: 
Using #5 needles, cast on 42 [44, 46, 48] sts. 

K 1, p 1 in ribbing for 1 ½”. 

Change to #8 needles & work in stockinette st until piece measures 3”. 

On next row inc 1 st each end of needle & repeat this inc every 1” 3 times more. 

Work even on 50 [52, 54, 56] sts until piece measures 6 ½” [6 ½”, 7”, 7”].

SHAPE CAP: 
At the beg of each of next 2 rows bind off 5 sts. 

Dec 1 st each end of needle every 4th row 3 times & every other row 8 [9, 10, 11] times. 

At beg of each of next 6 rows bind off 2 sts. 

Bind off remaining sts.

COLLAR: 
Using #8 needles, cast on 91 [91, 95, 95] sts. 

K 1, p 1 in ribbing for 3”.  Bind off.

FINISHING: 
Using Purl side for right side, sew underarm, shoulder & sleeve seams. 

Sew in sleeves. 

Steam seams. 

Turn back cuffs. 

Sew on collar to within 1” of each front edge. 

Sew small button on left front at neck edge & make a button loop on right front edge.
