1950s Vogue
Sheath Cocktail Dress #158
A
silken sheath, knitted of silk crêpe & ribbon, has the low V-back décolleté,
contrasted against a high neckline in front.
Wear it with satin accessories--belt, bag, pumps. Very feminine in white
& pastels, very sophisticated in black.
SIZES: 12, 14, 16.
Directions
are for size 12.
Changes
for sizes 14 & 16 are in brackets.
MATERIALS:

Silk Crêpe , 9 [11-13] ½ oz skeins
Unger
Fantasy Ribbon 4 [4-5] 100 yd spools in matching color.

Cast
on with silk crêpe .
1st row:
With
ribbon, K.
2nd row:
With
ribbon, * P 1, ribbon to back, sl 3 sts as if to p, bringing ribbon flat &
loose across the sl sts; rep from * across, end p 1. Drop ribbon, pick up silk crêpe . [Carry ribbon &/or silk crêpe, when not
in use loosely along side of work.]
3rd & 5th rows: With silk crêpe , K.
4th & 6th rows: With silk crêpe , P.
7th row:
With
silk crêpe , K 2, * insert point of right-hand needle under ribbon loop of row
2, k the next st, draw next st down & thru ribbon loop, k 3; rep from *
across, end k 2 [this is called the “pick-up” row].
8th row:
With
silk crêpe , P.
Rep these rows for patt.
NOTE:
When
dec, k 2 tog 4 times on 7th row, pick up loops as usual.
When
blocking, stretch lengthwise so that 8 rows = 1”.
Use
cloth & press flat on wrong side.
SKIRT
BACK:
Start
at lower edge with silk crêpe & #4 needles, cast on 125 [133-141] sts.
Work
in patt.
Work
even for 14 rows.
Next row for hem [patt 7th row]: P, pick up loops as before.
Next row: P.

to work even in patt until 103 rows from hem.
[Skirt
has been planned for 30”. Any changes in
length should be made before 1st dec row.]
1st dec row: * K 2 tog 4 times, work across in patt [4 sts
dec]; 121 [129-137] sts.
Work
even for 23 rows.
2nd dec row: Work in patt to within last 8 sts, k 2 tog 4
times; 117 [125-133] sts.
Work
even for 23 rows.
Rep from * dec 4 sts alternately at beg & end of every
24th row until 109 [117-125] sts rem.
Work
even for 14 rows.
Next row: Keep patt even, work
first 36 [40-44] sts, sl marker on needle, work next 37 sts, sl 2nd
marker on needle, work rem 36 [40-44] sts.
**Next row: Work in patt to within
8 sts of marker, k 2 tog 4 times, sl marker from left to right needle, work in
patt to 2nd marker, sl marker, k 2 tog 4 times, work to end of row

in same manner as for skirt back, dec 4 sts alternately every 32nd
row instead of every 24th row until 113 [121-129] sts rem.
Work
even for 22 rows.
Next row: Work across 36 [40-44],
sl marker on needle, work next 41 sts, sl 2nd marker on needle, work
across rem 36 [40-44] sts.
Next row: Dec 4 sts before first
marker & after 2nd marker as for skirt back.
Discontinue
markers; 105 [113-121] sts.
Work
even for 24 rows.
Place
a marker for waistline.
BLOUSE:
Work
even in patt until 72 rows from marker.
SHAPE
ARMHOLES:
Work
across 6 [7-7] sts & sl on holder; work across row.
Next row: Work first 6 [7-7] sts
& sl on holder, work across row.
Following row: With silk crêpe , cast
on 5 sts at beg & end of next row.
[Wind
a bobbin of silk crêpe to be used at ends of row when rows 1 & 2 of patt
are worked, as facings are worked in st st with silk crêpe only.]
Dec 1 st inside facing sts at beg & end of every other row 4
[5-7] times; 95 [99-103] sts.
Work
even until armholes are 40 [44-48] rows.
Next row: Work across 24 [25-26]
sts in patt, cast on 5 sts with silk crêpe
[neck facing], sl rem 71 [74-77] sts on holder.
Working on left side only, keep arm & neck
facings in st & silk crêpe, work even in patt until armholes are 56 [60-64]
rows.
SHAPE
SHOULDER:
At
arm edge only, bind off 9 [10-11] sts once; then 4 sts every other row 3 times;
then 8 sts once.
RIGHT
SIDE:
Keep
center 47 [49-51] sts on holder, attach silk crêpe & ribbon at neck edge.
With
silk crêpe work to correspond to left side.
Sl
the 47 [49-51] sts to needle & with silk crêpe, k 1 row on wrong side.
Work 7 more rows in st st, inc 1 st each end every other
row. Bind off loosely.
BODICE BACK:
NECK FACINGS [Make 2]:
Cast
on 5 sts.
Work
8 rows of st st & sl these sts on holder to be joined at neck edge of back
when divided for facings.
Cast on 81 [85-89] sts.
Work
in patt.
Inc
1 st each end every 6th row 10 times; at the same time, when 38 [40-42] rows have been worked
& there are 93 [97-103] sts, divide for V-neck.
With right side facing, work 45 [47-50] sts, k 2 tog, sl the 5
sts of one neck facing to needle & work across these 5 sts [Wind a bobbin
of silk crêpe as on left side of neck facing & sleeve facing of front
blouse.] Sl rem 46 [48-51] sts of back
to holder.
RIGHT
SIDE:
Cont
to inc at side edge as before; at the
same time, dec 1 st at inside facing sts at neck edge every 4th
row 20 times.
Shape
armhole on row 71 [75-79] from beg.
SHAPE
ARMHOLE:
K,
then sl 6 [7-7] sts on holder, work across row.
Next row: Work to arm edge, with
silk crêpe , cast on 5 sts for facing.
Dec
1 st inside facing at arm edge every other row 5 [5-6] times.
Work
even until armhole is 58 [62-64] rows.
Shape
shoulder same as for front shoulder.
LEFT
SIDE:
Attach
5 sts of rem facing at center, attach silk crêpe & ribbon & work to correspond to
right side, reversing shaping.
Transfer
the 6 sts at back underarm to needle & p 1 row on right side.
With silk crêpe only, work 7 more rows, inc 1 st each end every
other row. Bind off loosely.
FINISHING:
Block
each piece.
Sew
seams with silk crêpe .
Turn
under facings & sew in place.
Press
on wrong side.
With
#2 crochet hook & ribbon, work 1 row of sc around lower edge of skirt,
around neck & arm edges of blouse.
If desired, run an elastic thread thru wrong side of waistline.
