1950s Vogue Bareback Cocktail Dress #159

A bareback dress with crossed straps--they are knitted separately and lined with ribbon. The whole dress is in a wide rib and has a slightly flaring skirt.  The yarn is pure linen, particularly smart in natural and pretty and feminine in any pastel color.

SIZES:  12, 14, 16. 
Directions are for size 12. 
Changes for sizes 14 and 16 are in brackets.

MATERIALS: 
Pauline Denham Denlin , 7 [8-9] 2 oz skeins
#1 knitting needles             
#5 Steel crochet hook
Dress zipper 10 inches.

GAUGE : 
7 sts = 1 inch; 
10 rows = 1 inch

RIB PATTERN: 
1st row:  K 10, * p 2, k 20 [21-22]; repeat from *, end p 2, k 10.

2nd row:  P 10, * k 2, p 20 [21-22]; repeat from *, end k 2, p 10.  \

Repeat these 2 rows for pattern.

SKIRT [Make 2]: 
Cast on 198 [206-214] sts. 

Work in rib pattern. 

Work even for 3 ins., ending with row 2.

1st dec row [9 sts dec]:  K 2 tog at beg of row; then in center of each k panel across row and end k 10. 

Work even for 3 ½ ins, end with row 2.

2nd dec row:  K 9, then k 2 sts tog in center of each k panel across, end k 8, k 2 tog. 

Work even for 3 ½ ins, end with row  

Continue to repeat these 2 alternating dec rows every 3 ½ ins 5 times more; then every 1 inch 5 times; 90 [98-106] sts. 

Work even until 30 ins from beg or desired length to waistline. 

Bind off all sts in pattern.

FINISHING: 
Sew seams, leaving upper left side free for 5 ins. 

Work 2 rows of sc around upper and lower edges; 1 row around side opening. 

Make a casing for elastic inside waistline.  Block.

BLOUSE BACK:  RIB PATTERN:
1ST row:  K 4, * p 2, k 8 [9-10]; repeat from *, end p 2, k 4.

2nd row:  P 4, * k 2, p 8 [9-10]; repeat from *, end k 2, p 4. 

Repeat these 2 rows for blouse. 

Cast on 90 [98-106 sts. 

Work in rib pattern. 

Work even for ½ in, end with row2.

Inc row:  Inc 1 st each end and in center of each k panel; 100 [108-116] sts. 

Work even until 3 ins from beg, end with row 1.

Next row:    Work across 44 [47-50] sts, bind off center 22 [24-26] sts, work last 44 [47-50] sts.

 Attach another ball of yarn at center edge and work both sides at once. 

At each arm edge, inc 1 st; then every ¾ in [¾-1] in 5 [4-3] times more; at the same time, at each center edge, dec 1 st every row 50 [52-54] times.

FRONT: 
Work as for back until there are 110 [118-126] sts. 

Then inc 1 st each end every ¾  [¾-1] in 6 [5-4] times; 122 [128-134] sts. 

Work even until 8 [8-8 ½] ins from beg.

SHAPE ARMHOLES: 
Bind off 6 [7-8] sts at beg of next 2 rows. 

Dec 1 st each end every other row 7 times; 96 [100-104] sts. 

Work even until armholes are 6 ¼ [6 ½-6 ½] ins.

SHAPE NECK: 
Work across 29 sts and sl these sts on holder; bind off center 38 [42-46] sts; work across last 29 sts. 

Working on one side only, at center edge, bind off 3 sts every other row 5 times [14 sts]. 

Work even until armhole is 7 ¼ [7 ½-7 ½] ins.

SHAPE SHOULDER: 
At arm edge, bind off 7 sts every other row twice. 

Work other side to correspond, reversing shaping.

STRAPS [Make 2]: 
Cast on 14 sts. 

Work even in stockinette st for 14 [14 ½-15] ins.  Bind off.

FINISHING: 
Sew side seams, leaving left side at lower edge free for 5 ins. 

Sew a band to each shoulder. 

Work 2 rows of sc around back, armhole, neck and straps; and 1 row around side opening.  Block. 

Face straps with taffeta. 

Cross straps and sew ends to each center edge of back. 

Sew blouse to skirt. 

Run elastic through casing. 

Sew in side zipper.
