1950s Jenny Baby’s 4-Piece Sweater Set #B118

Quick & easy to crochet this delightful ‘puff stitch’ patterned sweater with matching cap, mittens & booties!

SIZE:  6 to 9 months
Larger sizes may be achieved by increasing size of hook & weight of yarn.

Materials:
American Thread Dawn Orlon
OR
Dawn Wintuk Baby Yarn 7 - 1 oz. Skeins White
# F & G Plastic Crochet Hooks, OR any size hook which will result in stitch gauge below.

Gauge for F Hook: 
5 sts = 1”
Gauge for G Hook: 
2 patts = 1”
  
SACQUE: 
Starting at neck edge with F hk, ch 81, sc in 2nd st from hk, 1 sc in each rem st of ch, ch 3, turn-80 sc.

2nd ROW (right side):  Ch 3, counts as 1 dc, 1 dc in each of next 12 sc for Front, 3 dc in next sc (inc point), 1 dc in each of next 12 sc for Sleeve, 3 dc in next sc (inc point), 1 dc in each of next 26 dc for Back, 3 dc in next sc (inc point), 1 dc in each of next 12 sc for other Sleeve, 3 dc in next sc (inc point), 1 dc in each rem 13 sc for other Front, ch 1, turn.

3rd ROW:  1 Sc in each dc working 5 sc in center dc at each of the 4 inc points, ch 3, turn.

4th ROW:  1 Dc in each sc working 3 dc in center sc at each of the 4 inc points, ch 1, turn.

Rep last 2 rows 3 times-184 dc.

NEXT ROW:  1 Sc in each of next 27 sts for Front, ch 5 for underarm, sk next 38 sts for Sleeve, 1 sc in each of next 54 sts for Back, ch 5 for other underarm, sk next 38 sts for other Sleeve, 1 sc in each rem 27 sts for other Front, ch 1, turn.

START PATTERN:  Change to G hk.

NEXT ROW (right side):  Work 1 sc, 1 puff st in 1st sc (patt), (puff st: * yo hk, insert in st, pull yarn thru, rep from * once, yo hk & pull thru all lps at one time), * sk next 2 sts, sc, puff st in next st, rep from * across row ending with sc in last sc, ch 1, turn.

2nd ROW:  Sc, puff st in 1st sc, * sc, puff st in next sc, rep from * across row ending with sc in last sc, ch 1, turn. 

Rep last row for patt until work meas 6” from underarm, ending on right side of sacque (right side of d c row is right side of work), cut yarn.

SLEEVES: 
With G hk, attach yarn in center st of ch at underarm, work 1 patt (sc & puff st) in same space, * sk 2 sts, work 1 patt in next st, rep from * across row ending with sc in same sp with 1st sc, join, ch 1, turn - (15 puff sts). 

Work even in patt joining & turning each rnd until sleeve meas 4 ¾” from underarm ending on right side of work, join, ch 3, turn.

BEADING: 
1 Dc in same sp, * 2 dc in next sc, rep from * all around, join, turn.

NEXT RND: * Ch 4, sl st bet next 2 dc group, rep from * all around, cut yarn. 

Work other sleeve in same manner.

NECK EDGE: 
BEADING:
With wrong side of 1st row of neck edge facing, attach yarn in 1st st of starting ch, ch 3, dc in same sp, * sk 1 st, 2 dc in next st, rep from * across row ending to correspond, turn.

NEXT ROW:  Ch 1, sl st bet 2 dc group, * ch 4, sl st in next dc group, rep from * across neck edge, then work edge all around sacque working in every other row along side of each front & in each sc of patt along lower edge, join, cut yarn.

TIES: 
With F hk & 2 strands of yarn, work ch about 36” long & lace thru beading at neck edge. 

Work 2 chs 16” long & lace thru beading at sleeve edge, tying in bow at top.

HAT:  With F hk, ch 2, 8 sc in 2nd st from hk, join in 1st sc, turn.

2nd RND: Ch 3, dc in same sp, 2 dc in each sc all around, join, ch 1, turn-16 dc.

3rd RND:  * 1 Sc in next dc, 2 sc in next dc, rep from * all around, join- 24 sc.

NEXT 5 RNDS:  Alternating rnds work 1 rnd in dc, 1 rnd in sc, inc 1 st in each of 8 inc points having 1 more st bet incs in each rnd, join, do not turn-64 sts.

START PATT:  With G hk, work 1 sc, 1 puff st (patt) in 1st dc, sk 1 dc, * work patt in next dc, sk 1 dc, rep from * all around, join, ch 1, turn—32 patts. 
Cont in patt joining & turning each rnd until patt section meas 5”, ending on right side, turn.

NEXT RND: * Ch 4, sl st in next sc, rep from * all around, cut yarn. 

Fold back 6 rnds to form cuff.

EARLAPS: 
Sk 5 patts from center back, attach yarn in base of sc of next patt, work patt in same sp, work patt in base of sc of next 5 patts, ch 1, turn.

2nd ROW:  Sk 1st sc (a dec), work patt in each of next 4 sc, sc in next sc, ch 1, turn.

3rd ROW:  Work 4 patts, sc in last sc, ch 1, turn.

4th ROW:  Sk 1st sc, work 3 patts, sc in last sc, ch 1, turn.

5th ROW:  Work 3 patts, sc in last sc, ch 1, turn.

Rep last 2 rows twice, having 1 less patt in each even row, cut yarn.

Sk next 10 patts, attach yarn in base of sc of next patt & work other earlap in same manner. 

Attach yarn at edge of earlap & work 8” ch in each earlap for ties.  Knot ends.

POMPOMS:  (Make 3): 
Wind yarn over 2” cardboard 60 times. 

Slip off cardboard, tie at center, cut both ends & trim into shape. 

Tie at top of hat as illustrated.

BOOTIES: 
With F hk, ch 38, 1 sc in 2nd st from hk, 1 sc in each rem st of ch, join in 1st sc being careful not to twist ch, ch 3, turn.

2nd RND:  1 Dc in each sc, ch 1, turn.

NEXT 5 RNDS:  Work even alternating each sc & dc rnds same as sacque, joining & turning each rnd, do not cut yarn. 

Fold work in half, weave 7 sts at opposite end for instep, weave sts tog at lower edge.

UPPER SECTION:  BEADING:  Ch 3, dc in same sp, * sk 1 st, 2 dc in next st, rep from * all around—24 dc, ch 1, turn.

NEXT RND:  With G hk, work patt in every other dc.

NEXT 4 RNDS:  Work even in patt, then work edge same as sacque.  With 2 strands, work ch 13” long & lace thru beading.  Knot ends.

MITTENS: 
With F hk, ch 25 to meas about 4 ¾”, join being careful not to twist ch, ch 1, 1 sc in each st of ch, turn-25 sc.

NEXT RND:  Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), 1 dc in each sc, ch 1, turn.

NEXT 5 RNDS:  Work even alternating sc & dc rnds, joining & turning each rnd.

NEXT RND:  1 Dc in each of next 3 sts, dec in next 2 sts (to dec: * yo hk, insert hk in next st, pull yarn thru, yo hk & work off 2 lps, rep from * once, yo & work off all lps at one time), rep from beg all around, ch 1, turn— 20 sts.

NEXT RND:  1 Sc in each dc, ch 3, turn.

NEXT 2 RNDS:  Work 2 sts tog in each rnd (5 sts rem), cut yarn leaving 4” length.  Thread into blunt needle & draw sts tog, cut yarn.

CUFF:
With wrong side of sc round at top facing, attach yarn in opposite side of starting ch at joining, ch 3, dc in same sp, * sk 1 st, 2 dc in next st, rep from * all around, join, ch 1, turn — 26 dc.

NEXT 3 RNDS:  With G hk, work in patt working patt in every other dc in 1st rnd, joining & turning each rnd.  Then work edge same as sacque, cut yarn.  With 2 strands, work ch 13” long & lace thru beading.  Knot ends.
