1945 Infant’s Sweater, Mittens & Cap 3-Piece Knit Set #B-127
 SIZE:
Infants 2 & 3.  Directions are for size 2 with changes for size 3 in brackets.
MATERIALS:
SWEATER:
Chadwick’s Red Heart Baby Wool, 3 [4] balls [3/4 oz balls]
Pair Knitting Needles #3 [3 mm]
7 Small Buttons
CAP & MITTENS:
Chadwick’s Red Heart Baby Wool, 2 balls [3/4 oz balls]
Pair Knitting Needles #3 [3 mm]
1 yd Ribbon ½”wide
1 yd Ribbon 1/4”  wide
GAUGE:
SWEATER:
8 sts = 1”
10 row = 1”
CAP & MITTENS:
Stockinette st [st st] 7 sts = 1”
9 rows = 1”
CAP:
Starting at front edge, cast on 86 sts & work 8 rows of st st [k 1 row, p 1 row].
Now work in patt as follows:
1ST ROW:  K 1, * o, k 2 tog.  Rep from * across, ending with k 2 tog, k 1 [86 sts].
2ND ROW:  K 1, * p & k in next st.  Rep from * across to last st, k 1 [170 sts].
3RD TO 7TH ROWS INCL:  * With yf, sl 1, k 1.  Rep from * across.
8TH ROW:  K 1, p 2 tog across to last st, k 1 [86 sts].
Rep 1st to 8th rows incl 4 more times; then rep 1st row once more.
NEXT ROW:  P across.
SHAPE TOP:
1ST ROW:  K 5, * k 2 tog, k 7.  Rep from * across [77 sts].
2ND TO 6TH ROWS INCL:  P 1 row, k 1 row alternately.
7TH ROW:  K 5, * k 2 tog, k 6.  Rep from * across [68 sts].
8TH TO 12TH ROWS INCL:  Same as 2nd to 6th rows incl.
13TH ROW:  K 5, * k 2 tog, k 5.  Rep from * across [59 sts].
14TH, 15TH & 16TH ROWS:  P 1 row, k 1 row, p 1 row.
17TH ROW:  K 5, * k 2 tog, k 4.  Rep from * across [50 sts].
18TH, 19TH & 20TH ROWS:  Same as 14th, 15th & 16th rows.
21ST ROW:  * K 3, k 2 tog.  Rep from * across [40 sts].
22ND ROW:  P across.
23RD ROW:  * K 2, k 2 tog.  Rep from * across [30 sts].
24TH ROW:  P across.
25TH ROW:  * K 1, k 2 tog.  Rep from * across [20 sts].
26TH ROW:  P 2 tog across [10 sts].
Break yarn, leaving 12” length.
Thread darning needle with this length & sl rem sts onto it. 
Draw tog tightly & darn in on wrong side.
Sew back seam to last row of patt.
Turn under cast-on sts & whip to 1st row of patt.
Work row of sc along lower edge of cap.
Cut ½” ribbon in half.  Fold 1 end of 1 piece into 4 small lps & fasten to side of cap.
Finish other side in same way.
Press thru damp cloth.

MITTENS:
Start at edge of cuff, cast on 46 sts.
Work same as cap until 3 complete patts have been made.
Then rep 1st row one more [4 rows of holes].
Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 1”.
NEXT ROW:  With right side facing you, k across.
FOLLOWING ROW:  P across.
SHAPE THUMB GORE:
1ST ROW:  K 17, k twice in next st, k 1, k twice in next st, k 26.
2ND & ALL EVEN ROWS:  P across.
3RD ROW:  K 17, k twice in next st, k 3, k twice in next st, k 26.
Cont thus, inc 2 sts [as before] on every k row until there are 58 sts ending with p row.
NEXT ROW:  K 18, sl next 14 sts onto safety pin for thumb, cast on 4 sts, k across rem 26 sts [48 sts].
Work in st st for 1”, end with p row.
SHAPE TIP:
1ST ROW:  * K 4, k 2 tog.  Rep from * across [40 sts].
2ND, 3RD & 4TH ROWS:  P 1 row, k 1 row, p 1 row.
5TH ROW:  * K 3, k 2 tog.  Rep from * across [32 sts].
Work 3 rows straight.
Cont thus, dec 8 sts evenly on every 4th row until 16 sts rem.
NEXT ROW:  P across.
FOLLOWING ROW:  K 2 tog across [8 sts]. 
Break yarn & finish tip same as cap.
Turn up hem & whip in place.
THUMB:
Cast on 3 sts, k 14 sts from safety pin.
Work straight for ½”.
NEXT ROW:  * K 3, k 2 tog.  Rep from * across.
Work 3 rows straight.
FOLLOWING ROW:  * K 2, k 2 tog.  Rep from * across.
NEXT ROW:  P across.
FOLLOWING ROW:  * K 1, k 2 tog.  Rep from * across.
Break yarn & finish tip same as cap.
Sew thumb seam & sew back to thumb in place.
Cut ¼” ribbon in half & run thru ribbing at wrist.
Make second mitten to correspond, reverse position of thumb.
Press thru damp cloth.

SWEATER:
BACK:
Start at lower edge, cast on 80 [88] sts.
Work tightly in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 1”.
Work in patt at follows:
1ST & 2ND ROWS: * K 2, p 2.  Rep from * across.
3RD & 4TH ROWS:  * P 2, k 2.  Rep from * across.
Rep 1st to 4th rows incl until piece meas in all 7” [7 ½”].
Place marker in each end of piece to indicate end of side seam.
Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows.
Dec 1 st at end of each row until there rem 58 [62] sts.  Sl these sts onto st holder.
LEFT FRONT:
Start at lower edge, cast on 46 [50] sts.
Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 1”.
NEXT ROW:  Work in patt, as for back, across to last 10 sts, work last 10 sts in ribbing [front border].
FOLLOWING ROW:  Work 10 sts in ribbing [front border].  Compl row in patt st.
Cont thus until piece meas in all 7” [7 ½”].
Place marker in side edge to indicate end of side seam.
Start at side edge, bind off 2 sts once; then dec 1 st at side edge on every other row until there rem 36 [38] sts.  Sl these sts onto st holder.
RIGHT FRONT:
Work to correspond with left front, make buttonhole 3 sts in from front edge when piece meas ½” [1”], & meas from 1st row of last buttonhole every 1 ½” thereafter until 7 in all are made.
 –To make  buttonhole on 1 row bind off 2 sts & on next row cast on 2 sts to replace those bound off.—
Sl these sts on a st holder.
SLEEVES:
Start at wrist edge, cast on 56 [60] sts.
Work same as back until piece meas in all 7” [7 ½”].
Place markers in each end of work.
Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows.
Dec 1 st at end of each row until there rem 34 [36] sts.  Sl these sts onto st holder.
Sl sts from st holders onto 1 needle in this order:
right front, sleeve, back, sleeve, left front.
There are on needle 198 [210] sts.
YOKE:
Cont making buttonholes until 7 in all are made.
Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 2 rows.
SHAPE TOP:
1ST DEC ROW:  Work in ribbing over 17 [18] sts;
                           FOR SIZE 2 [k 3 tog, work 13 sts] 10 times
                           FOR SIZE 3 [k 3 tog, work 14 sts] 10 times;
work in ribbing over 18 [19] sts.
Work 3 rows straight.
2ND DEC ROW:  Work in ribbing over 16 [17] sts
                           FOR SIZE 2 [k 3 tog, rib 11 sts] 10 times
                           FOR SIZE 3 [k 3 tog, rib 12 sts] 10 times;
k 3 tog, work in ribbing over 17 [18] sts.
Work 3 rows straight.
3RD DEC ROW:  Work in ribbing over 15 [16] sts
                           FOR SIZE 2 [k 3 tog, rib 9 sts] 10 times
                           FOR SIZE 3 [k 3 tog, rib 10 sts] 10 times;
k 3 tog, work in ribbing over 16 [17] sts.
Work 1 row straight.
Working in ribbing, bind off 10 sts at beg of next 2 rows.
4TH DEC ROW:  Bind off 4 sts, work in ribbing over next 9 [11] sts
                           FOR SIZE 2 [k 3 tog, rib 7 sts] 8 times
                           FOR SIZE 3 [k 3 tog, rib 8 sts] 8 times;
k 3 tog, work in ribbing over 16 [18] sts.
Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 3 rows.
5TH DEC ROW:  Bind off 4 sts, :  Work in ribbing over 16 [17] sts
                           FOR SIZE 2 [k 3 tog, rib 5 sts] 8 times
                           FOR SIZE 3 [k 3 tog, rib 6 sts] 8 times;
k 3 tog, work in ribbing over 7 [9] sts.
Bind off 4 sts at beg of next row.
6TH DEC ROW:  Bind off 2 [3] sts, work in ribbing over 3 [5] sts
                           FOR SIZE 2 [k 3 tog, rib 3 sts] 7 times
                           FOR SIZE 3 [k 3 tog, rib 4 sts] 7 times;
k 3 tog, work in ribbing over 2 [4] sts.
Bind off at beg of next row 2 [3] sts.
Bind off rem 32 [42] sts.
Sew side seams & sleeve seams to markers.
Sew remainder of sleeves in place.
COLLAR:
With wrong side facing you, pick up & knit along nick edge 68 [76] sts.
Work in patt st, inc 1 st at end of each row until piece meas 1 1/4”.  Bind off loosely.
Work row of sc along edge of Collar.
Sew on buttons.
