1946 Flower & Button Pillbox Hat #108

A handy needlewoman will quickly create this lovely pillbox hat with flower & button accents to complete her favorite outfit…& then soon make another!

SIZE:  Medium

MATERIALS: 
Bucilla Strawkraft or Fleisher’s Straw-Twist, 4 balls.
Bucilla or Fleisher’s Steel Crochet Hooks, #0 & #3.
19” Wire.                   
9 Buttons.                 
Grosgrain Ribbon.
Net, Lace or Dotted-Swiss for Veil, if desired.


CROWN: 
With 2 strands & #0 hook, ch 7, 2 dc in 3rd st from hook, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 5 dc in last st, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts on other side of ch, 2 dc in first st, join this & every rnd with sl st in top of ch [16 sts, count ch 3 as 1 dc].

Work all rounds in back loop only.

2nd Rnd:  Ch 3, 2 dc in same st with sl st, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of 5 sts, 2 dc in next st, 5 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of 5 sts on other side, 2 dc in next st, 2 dc in same st with sl st [28 sts].

3rd Rnd:  Ch 3, 2 dc in same st with sl st, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of 9 sts, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of 9 sts, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc in same st with sl st [44 sts].

4th Rnd:  Ch 3, 1 dc in sl st, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of 17 sts, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, 3 dc in next st, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of 17 sts, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in sl st [56 sts].

5th Rnd:  Ch 3, 1 dc in sl st, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in next, 1 dc in next, 2 dc in next, 1 dc in each of 19 sts, 2 dc in next, 1 dc in next, 2 dc in next, 1 dc in next, 3 dc in next, 1 dc in next, 2 dc in next, 1 dc in next, 2 dc in next, 1 dc in each of 19, 2 dc in next, 1 dc in next, 2 dc in next, 1 dc in next, 1 dc in sl st [68 sts].
Do not fasten off. 

Block top of crown to 5” by 6 ¼”. 

Fasten ends of 19” piece of wire to form an oval the same size as crown.

6th Rnd:  Ch 2, work over wire, 1 sc in sl st, & in each st around, 2 sc in last st.

7th Rnd:  Ch 3, 2 dc in next st, inc 1 st in 18th, 52nd & last st of rnd [74 sts].

8th Rnd:  Ch 3, inc in first, 5th, 22nd, 52nd & 69th st [79 sts].

9th Rnd:  Inc in 4th, 10th, 42nd, 68th & 75th st [84 sts].

10th Rnd:  Inc in 15th, 40th, 50th, 70th & last st [89 sts].

11th Rnd:  Work 1 rnd of sc even.  Fasten off.

TRIMMING: 
With 1 strand & #3 hook, ch 4, work 14 dc in first ch, join with sl st [15 sts, count ch 3].

2nd Rnd:  Ch 3, work in both loops, 1 dc in sl st, 2 dc in each st to end [80 sts].

3rd and 4th Rnds:  Rep 2nd rnd.  Fasten off.

Make 9 flowers.  Sew flowers to side of crown, as illustrated. 

Sew 1 button in center of each flower. 

Sew in ribbon headband.

NOTE: 
To make this hat extra special, add a veil of net, lace or dotted-swiss in a matching color. 

Experimenting with fabrics & color combinations will make this your own original creation!  Your hat will be truly fascinating!
