1946 Baby’s Short Sleeve All-In-One Ensemble #B-139

This is the perfect season-spanning outfit…short sleeves…charming knit-in details on yoke & sleeves…waist line accents…3 buttons open on each shoulder & front…all sure to please & quick to create!

SIZE:
Infants 2 & 3
Directions are for size 2, with changes for size 3 in brackets.

MATERIALS:
Chadwick’s Red Heart Baby Wook, ¾ oz, 2 [5] balls
Pair Knitting Needles #2 [2 ¾ mm]
9 Buttons
1 yd Ribbon ½” wide

GAUGE:
[stockinette st—k 1 row, p 1 row]
8 sts = 1”
10 rows = 1”

OUTFIT:
FRONT:
Start at crotch, cast on 16 sts.

Work in stockinette st, inc 1 st at end of each row until there are 20 sts.

Now cast on 4 sts at end of each row until there are on needle 44 [52] sts.

Cast on 2 sts at end of each row until there are on needle 80 [88] sts.

Cast on 6 sts at end of next 2 rows.  There are on needle 92 [100] sts.

Work straight until piece meas from last cast-on sts 6 ½” [7”].

NEXT ROW:  Work across, dec 20 sts evenly across.  There are on needle 72 [80] sts.

WAISTBAND:
Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for ¾”.

TOP:
1ST ROW:  With right side facing you, k across.

2ND ROW:  P 7, o, [k 2 tog[ twice; o, p 4 [6] sts, o,  [k 2 tog] twice; o, p 34 [38] sts, o, [k 2 tog] twice, o, p 4 [6] sts, o, [k 2 tog] twice; o, p 7.

Rep last 2 rows alternately, inc 1 st at both ends of next row & every 3rd row thereafter, until there are on needle 80 [88] sts.

NOTE:  Work all inc sts in stockinette st.

Work straight until piece meas 1 ½” from top of waistband.

SHAPE ARMHOLES:
Keep continuity of patt, bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows & 2 sts at beg of following 4 rows.

Dec 1 st at end of each row until there rem 62 [70] sts.

Work straight until piece meas from top of waistband 3” [3 ½”].

NEXT ROW:  With right side facing you, k across.

FOLLOWING ROW:  Work in patt across 16 [18] sts, k across next 30 [34] sts.   Work in patt across rem 16 [18] sts.

Rep last 2 rows alternately until piece meas from top of waistband 4” [4 ½”].

NEXT ROW:  Work across 22 [24] sts, bind off for front of neck next 18 [22] sts.  Work across rem 22 [24] sts.

Work in patt, as established, over this last set of sts only for 1 ½”.  Bind off.

Attach yarn at opposite side of neck edge & work other side to correspond.

BACK:
Work exactly same as front to top of waistband.

Cont in stockinette st, shape underarm edges & armholes same as front.

Work straight until piece meas from top of waistband 4 ½” [5”].

Cont straight, only working center 30 [34] sts in garter st [k each row], until piece meas same as front.  Bind off.

SLEEVES:
Cast on 42 [50] sts.

Work in garter st for ½”.

NEXT ROW:  K across 16 [20] sts, k twice in each of next 10 sts, k rem 16 [20] sts.

FOLLOWING ROW:  P across 14 [18] sts, * o, [k 2 tog] twice; o, p 6.  Rep from * once more; o, [k 2 tog] twice; o, p across 14 [18] sts.

NEXT ROW:  K across.

Rep last 2 rows alternately, inc 1 st at end of each row until there are on row 62 [70] sts.

Work straight until piece meas 2” in all.

SHAPE TOP:
Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows & 2 sts at beg of following 2 rows.

Dec 1 st at end of each row until there rem 44 [52] sts.  Bind off.

Press pieces thru damp cloth.  Sew side seams.

LEG BANDS:
With right side facing you, pick up & k along edge of leg opening 98 [102] sts.

Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for ¾”. 

Bind off in ribbing.

FINISHING:
Start at armhole edge, sew each shoulder seam for ¼”.

Sew sleeve seams & sew sleeves in, easing in any fullness across shoulder.

Work row of sc along shoulder openings & neck edge, making 3 buttonloops on each shoulder of front.

Work row of sc along edges of crotch, making 3 buttonloops on front edge.

Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonloops.

Run ribbon thru ribbing of waistband & tie in back.
