1946 Baby’s Puff Stitch Bonnet & Mittens

Delightful
set of cap & mittens work up quickly in puff stitch, accented with scallop
edging. Create this duo to match a
favorite sweater pattern, or simply as a marvelous accessory to keep or gift!

GAUGE:
3 puff sts & 2 sc = 1 ¼”

CAP:
Start at center of back, ch 2.

RND: 6 Sc in 2nd ch from hk.
2ND
RND: 2 Sc in each sc around [12 sc].
3RD
RND: * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next
sc. Rep from * around [18 sc].
4TH
RND: * Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next
sc. Rep from * around [24 sc].
Cont
thus, inc 6 sc evenly on each rnd until there are 90 sc on rnd & piece meas
about 4 ¼” in diameter.
Work
1 rnd without inc.
Now
work front as follows:
1ST ROW: Work in back lp only of scs, make * sc in next sc, ch 1, sk next sc, yo, insert hk in next sc & pull lp thru, [yo, insert hk in same sc & pull lp thru] twice; yo & draw thru all lps on hk [puff st made]. Rep from * until there are 26 puff sts, sc in next sc after last puff st. Rem 11 sc are for back of neck. Ch 1, turn.

EDGING:
1ST ROW: Sc in 1st sc, * sk next sc, 5 dc in next sc [shell made], sk next sc, sc in next sc. Rep from * across. Ch 1, turn.
1ST ROW: Sc in 1st sc, * sk next sc, 5 dc in next sc [shell made], sk next sc, sc in next sc. Rep from * across. Ch 1, turn.
2ND
ROW: Sl st in each st across. Break off.
Work
row of shells [same as edging] in rem free lps of scs of last rnd of back.
Cont
shells across back of neck, join last shell with sl st in 1st
sc.
Ch
1, turn & work sl st in each st around.
Break off.
Cut
1” ribbon in half & sew to cap for ties.
Use
1 yd for each rosette, make 2 rosettes of narrow ribbon & sew in place [as
shown in photo[.
MITTENS:
Start at wrist, ch 33 to meas 5 ½”. Join with sl st to form rind.

in each ch around [33 sc].
2ND
RND: Sc in each sc around. Rep 2nd rnd until piece meas 2 ½”.
NEXT
RND: Sc in each sc around, dec 4 sts
evenly around – to dec 1 sc, work off 2
sc as 1 sc.
FOLLOWING
RND: Sc in each sc around.
Rep
last 2 rnds alternately [be careful decs
do not fall directly over each other] until 21 sc rem.
NEXT
RND: Work off 2 sc as 1 sc all around
[11 sc]. Break off, leaving 8” length.
Thread
needle with this length & run thru rem sts.
Pull
tight & darn in end on wrong side.
CUFF:
1ST RND: With wrong side facing you, attach yarn at wrist edge & work sc in base of each sc around [33 sc]. Sl st in 1st sc. Ch 1, turn.

Rep
2nd & 3rd rnds alternately until cuff meas 1 ½”,
ending with 3rd rnd.
Ch
1, turn & work 2 rnds same as 1st & 2nd rows of
edging on cap. Break off.
Run
½ yd of narrow ribbon in & out around wrist.
Make
2nd mitten same as this one.
