1946 Baby’s All-In-One Cable Suit & Cap #B-137

Your little one will keep toasty warm in this cold weather 2-piece set of all-in-one suit with booties & mittens attached, & separate cap…all knit in a charming cable pattern.

SIZE:
Infant’s 2 & 3.
Directions will be for size 2 with changes to size 3 in brackets.

MATERIALS:
Chadwick’s Red Heart Knitting Worsted, 1 oz, 14 [16] balls
Pair Knitting Needles #5 [4 mm]
24” Circular Knitting needle #5 [4 mm]
Bone Crochet Hook #3
4 Buttons
4 Snap Fasteners

GAUGE:
Stockinette st
6 sts = 1”
8 rows = 1”

SWEATER:
BACK:
Start at top [back of neck & shoulders] cast on 68 [75] sts.

1ST ROW:  K across.

2ND ROW:  K 4, * p 4, k 4 [5] sts.  Rep from * across, ending with k 4.

3RD TO 6TH ROWS INCL:  Rep 1st & 2nd rows alternately 2 more times.

7TH ROW:  K 4, * make cable over next 4 sts – to make cable, sl next 2 sts onto double-pointed needle, k next 2 sts, k 2 sts from double-pointed needle.  K 4 [5] sts.  Rep from * across, ending with k 4.

8TH ROW:  Same as 2nd row.

Rep 1st to 8th rows incl until piece meas in all 3” [3 ½”].

SHAPE ARMHOLES:
Keep inc sts in garter st [k each row], inc 1 st at end of each row until there are on needle 80 [87] sts.  Sl these sts onto st holder.

LEFT FRONT:
Start at shoulder, cast on 28 [30] sts.

Work 8 rows same as back.

Keep continuity of cable patt, shape neck as follows:
Inc 1 st at beg of next row, inc same edge on each row thereafter until there are on needle 36 [39] sts.

Work straight until piece meas in all 3” [3 ½”].

SHAPE ARMHOLE:
Keep inc sts in garter st, inc 1 st at side edge on next row & on every other row thereafter until there are on needle 42 [45] sts.  Sl these sts onto st holder.

RIGHT FRONT:
Work to correspond with left front, reverse shapings.

Sl all sts onto circular needle in this order:  right front, back, left front.

Work back & forth in patt, as before, make cables over cables & garter st over garter st, until piece meas in all 6 ½” [7”].

Keep 4 sts at each end in garter st, work waistband in ribbing of k 4 [k 4], p 4 [p 5] for 2”.

NEXT ROW:  With right side facing you, bind off for left underlap 4 [5] sts, knit [not in ribbing] rem of rnd.

Join & work in rnds of stockinette st [k each rnd] until piece meas from last row of waistband, ending at center front, 8” [8 ½”].

RIGHT LEG:
Turn & p 2 tog, p 76 [82] sts, p 2 tog.  Turn.

Work in rows of stockinette st [ k 1 row, p 1 row] over this last set of sts only, dec 1 st at both ends of each row until there rem 70 [76] sts.

Dec 1 st at end of each row until there rem 46 [50] sts.

Dec 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row until there rem 40 [44] sts.

Work 4 rows straight.

Then work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 1 ¼”.

Work 4 rows of garter st.

Entire foot is worked in garter st.

INSTEP:
K 26 [29] sts, turn & k 12 [14] sts.

Work over this last set of sts only for 28 rows.

FOOT:
1ST ROW:  Work across instep st, pick up & k 18 sts along edge of instep, k 14 [15] sts.

2ND ROW:  K 44 [47] sts, pick up & k 18 sts along edge of instep, k rem 14 [15] sts.

There are on needle 76 [80] sts.

Knit straight for 2 [4] rows.

SHAPE TOE:
1ST ROW:  Work across 32 [33] sts, place marker on needle, k 2 tog, work across 8 [10] sts, k 2 tog, place another marker on needle, work across 32 [33] sts.

2ND & ALL EVEN ROWS:  K across.

3RD & 5TH ROWS:  Work across, dec 1 st after 1st marker & 1 st before 2nd marker.

7TH & 9TH ROWS:  Dec 1 st at both ends of piece, work same as 3rd row.

Work 1 row straight.  Bind off.

LEFT LEG:
Work to correspond with right leg.

COLLAR:
Sew shoulder seams.

With wrong side facing you, pick up & k 66 sts along neck edge.

1ST ROW:  K 2, * k 2, p 2.  Rep from * across.

2ND & 3RD ROWS:  Work in ribbing to last 4 sts, turn.

4TH & 5TH ROWS:  Work in ribbing to last 8 sts, turn.

6TH & 7TH ROWS:  Work in ribbing to last 12 sts, turn.

Cont in ribbing, inc 1 st at end of each row until there are 80 sts on needle.  Bind off in ribbing.

SLEEVE:
Start at shoulder, cast on 46 [52] sts.

1ST ROW:  K across.

2ND ROW:  Inc in 1st st, k next 17 [19] sts, p 4, k 4, p 4, k 17 [19] sts, inc in last st.

3RD TO 6TH ROWS INCL:  Work in patt as before [1st & 2nd rows], work inc sts in garter st.

7TH ROW:  K 20 [22] sts.  Make cable over next 4 sts, k 4, make cable, k 20 [22] sts.

8TH ROW:  Work in patt.

Cont thus, inc 1 st at both ends of every other row until there are on needle 58 [62] sts.

Place marker at each end of piece.

Work straight for 1”.

Dec 1 st at both ends of next row & every 7th row thereafter until there rem 46 [48] sts.

Work straight [if necessary] until piece meas from markers 6” [6 ½”].

MITTENS:
NEXT ROW: K across, dec evenly to 36 sts.

Now work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for ¾”.

Work straight in garter st for 2 ½”.

SHAPE TOP:
Dec 6 sts evenly on every other row until 12 sts rem.  Then k 2 tog across.  Break yarn, leaving 8” length.

Thread needle with this length & sl rem sts onto it.

Draw tog tightly & darn in on wrong side.

FINISHING:
Sew sleeve seams & sew sleeves in.

Sew leg & foot seams.

Work row of sc along front & collar edges.

Sew underlap in place.

Sew on buttons.

With double yarn, make chain 1 ½ yds long & draw thru ribbing of waistband.

Make 4 chains each ½ yd long & draw thru ribbing of wrists & ankles.

TASSEL [MAKE 2]:
Cut piece of cardboard 2” wide & 3” long.

Lay 6” strand along length of cardboard. 

Wind yarn 25 times around width of cardboard.   Break yarn.

Tie ends of 6” strand & slip tassel off cardboard.

Wind yarn several times around strands close to top.

Cut loops at bottom & trim even.

Fasten tassel to each end of waist chain.

Make 8 more tassels, winding yarn 15 times & trimming to 1”.

Fasten tassel to each end of each ankle & wrist chain.

CAP:
Start at front edge, cast on 84 sts.

1ST ROW:  K across.

2ND ROW:  K 8, * p 4, k 4.  Rep from * across to last 8 sts, k 8.

Rep last 2 rows alternately until piece meas 1 ½”, ending with 2nd row.

NEXT ROW:  K 8, * make cable, k 4.  Rep from * across, ending with k 8.

Hereafter work in cable patt, keep 8 sts at each end in garter st until piece meas 5” in all, ending with 2nd row.

SHAPE TOP:
[K 2 tog, k 1] twice; k 2 tog, * k 4, [k 2 tog] twice.  Rep from * across to last 8 sts, [k 2 tog, k 1] twice; k 2 tog.

2ND ROW:  K 5, * p 4, k 2.  Rep from * across ending with p 4, k 5.


3RD ROW:  K 3, k 2 tog, * k 4, k 2 tog.  Rep from * across, ending with k 3.

4TH ROW:  K 4, * p 4, k 1.  Rep from * across, ending with p 4, k 4.

5TH ROW:  K 2, * k 2 tog, k 3.  Rep from * across, ending with k 2 tog, k 1, k 2 tog.

6TH & REM EVEN ROWS:  P across.

7TH ROW:  K 1, * k 2 tog, k 2.  Rep from * across.

9TH ROW:  * K 2 tog, k 1.  Rep from * across, ending with k 2 tog, k 2.

11TH ROW:  K 1, * k 2 tog.  Rep from * across.

Break yarn & finish same as top of mitten.

Sew back seam for 2”.

Make 12” chain & 7” chain.

Make 2 tassels same as waist chain & sew to end of each chain.

Fasten other ends of chains to cap for ties.
