1945 Saucy Brim Hat #161

MATERIALS:

J & P Coats or Clark’s ONT Pearl Cotton, #5, 8 balls dark brown.

Crochet hook #5.                

78” Millinery Wire.

24” Round Elastic.   1 Feather.

Net Veil [if desired]

GAUGE: 

3 ½ sts = 1”;  

4 ½ rnds = 1”.

Use 3 threads throughout pattern.

HAT:

Starting at center top of crown, ch 5 loosely.

1^st Rnd:  2 sc in 2^nd ch from hook, sc in next 2 ch, 2 sc in last ch; then, work along opposite side of starting ch, make sc in next 2 ch [8 sc].

2^nd & 3^rd Rnds:  2 sc in each sc around [32 sc at end of 3^rd rnd].

4^th, 5^th & 6^th Rnds:  Sc in each sc around.

7^th Rnd:  * 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc.  Rep from * around [48 sc].

8^th Rnd:  Rep 4^th rnd. 

Cut a piece of wire 17” long. 

Overlap ends of wire to form a circle 5” in diameter. 

Fasten ends securely.

9^th Rnd:  Hold wire at top of last rnd & work over it in order to conceal it, make sc in each sc around.

10^th Rnd:  Still work over wire, make sc in each sc around.

11^th to 18^th Rnds incl:  Rep 4^th rnd.

19^th Rnd:  * 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc.  Rep from * around [60 sc].

20^th & 21^st Rnds:  Rep 4^th rnd.

22^nd Rnd:  * Ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next sc.  Rep from * around.

23^rd Rnd:  * 2 sc in next sp, sc in next sc.  Rep from * around [90 sc].

24^th, 25^th & 25^th Rnds:  Rep 4^th rnd.

Cut a piece of wire 28” long. 

Overlap ends to form a circle 8 ½” in diameter & fasten securely.

27^th & 28^th Rnds:  Rep 9^th & 10^th rnds.

29^th Rnd:  Rep from 4^th rnd.

30^th Rnd:  * 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 9 sc.  Rep from * around [100 sc].

31^st & 32^nd Rnds:  Rep 4^th rnd. 

Overlap ends of rem 33” of wire to form a circle 10” in diameter & fasten securely.

33^rd & 34^th Rnds:  Rep 9^th & 10^th rnds. 

At end of 24^th rnd, sl st in next sc.  Break off.

FINISHING: 

Make a ch 22” long.  Break off. 

Draw ch thru eyelets of 22^nd rnd & tie at center back. 

Sew on feather. 

Fold elastic in half. 

Tie a knot in center of double strand of elastic. 

Sew ends to inner side of crown, adjusting to fit.
