Free Pattern - 1945 Frothy Toque & Purse Set #223

1945 Frothy Toque & Purse  Set #223

Purse Materials:
Hiawatha Belastraw Art. #35, 2 tubes
#0 Steel Crochet Hook, or #3 Bone Crochet Hook
Lining Material & Buckram
Bone ring 1 ¼” diameter

Toque Materials:
Hiawatha Strawlite Art. #35, 2 tubes
#0 Steel Crochet Hook, or #3 Bone Crochet Hook

Purse Bottom:
Ch 5, join with sl st into ring.

1st rnd:  Ch 3, 17 dc in ring.  Join with sl st to top of ch-3.

2nd rnd:  Ch 3, dc in same place as sl st, 2 dc in each st around [36 sts].  Join.

3rd rnd:  Ch 3, * 2 dc in next st, dc in next st.  Repeat from * around [54 sts].  Join.

4th rnd:  Ch 3, dc in next st, * 2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts.  Repeat from * around [72 sts].  Join.

5th rnd:  Ch 1, work sc in each st around.  Join.

Purse Sides:
1st rnd:  Ch 1, work sc in back loop only of each st around. 

Do not join; mark beg of rnd.

2nd rnd:  Sc in each st around.

3rd rnd:  * Draw up a loop on hook to measure 1 ½”, thread over & draw through loop on hook, work sc between the single & double strands of st-knot st made.  Repeat from * once more, sc in next 2 sts.  Continue thus around.

4th rnd:  Sc around, holding down knot sts with thumb to right side of work. 

Repeat last 3 rnds until side measures 7”, ending with 2 rnds of sc.  Sl st in next st.  Fasten off.

Purse top [Make 4 pieces]:
Starting at point, ch 4.

1st row:  4 Dc in 4th ch from hook.  Ch-3, turn.

2nd row:  Dc at base of ch-3, 2 dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in top of turning ch [10 sts].  Ch 3, turn.

3rd row:  Dc at base of ch-3, * dc in next st, 2 dc in next st.  Repeat from * across [15 sts].  Ch 3, turn.

4th row:  Dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, * dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st.  Repeat from * across [18 sts].  Ch 1, turn.

5th row:  Sc in each st across. 

Do not fasten off, but join to top of bag as follows:  Working through both loops of sts on both top & side of bag, work sl st in 2 sts, then * work knot st as on sides of bag, sl st in next 2 sts.  Repeat from * across, work sc along one side of top piece to point, ch 56, sl st in each ch back to point, work sc along other side of top piece.  Fasten off.

Purse Finishing: 
Cut linings & interlining, using crochet pieces for pattern. 

Cut 2 cardboard circles the size of bottom, then cut 1 circle into 4 pieces. 

Make lining [inserting cardboards in bottom & top]. 

Place lining in bag & sew into place, tacking at all seams. 

Cover bone ring closely with sc. 

Attach thread at corner joining of any 2 top pieces, * work sc to point, sl st up & back along ch, sc along other side to next joining, dec at joining.  Repeat from * around. 

Draw all cords through ring.  Knot together ends of adjacent cords.


Toque Top: 
Ch 5, join with sl st into ring.

1st, 2nd & 3rd rnds:  Same as 1st 3 rnds of Purse shown above.

4th rnd:  Ch 1, & inc in every 4th st work sc around [66 sts].  Join to 1st sc.

5th rnd:  Ch 1, work sc in front loops only of each st around. 

Do not join:  mark beg of rnd. 

Work sc around for 1”.  Sl st in next st.

Toque Sides:
1st rnd:  Work sc in back loops only, inc in every 11th st around [72 sts].  Do not join.

2nd & 3rd rnds:  Same as 3rd & 4th rnds of Sides of Purse.

4th rnd:  Sc, inc 6 sts evenly in rnd.

Repeat last 3 rnds 2 more times [90 sts], then work even in pattern [no more incs] until toque measures 4” from top, ending with 2 rows of sc. 

Join & fasten off.
