1945 Fancy Spooled Sailor Hat #222

MATERIALS:
Hiawatha Strawlite Art. #47, 2 tubes
#0 Steel Crochet Hook, or #3 Bone Crochet Hook
1 ½ yds Millinery Wire
2 ¼ yds Moire ribbon, 1 ½” wide
Small Quantity Millinery Sizing

HAT:
Make two 25” circles of wire, fastening ends securely.

Ch 2.  1st rnd:  9 Sc in 2nd ch from hook.  Join with sl st to 1st sc.

2nd rnd:  Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around.  Join.

3rd rnd:  Ch 3, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook & draw loop thru, insert hook in next ch & draw loop thru, insert hook in back loop of same sc where sl st was made & draw loop thru, insert hook in back loop of next sc & draw loop thru, thread over & draw thru all loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten--star st made.  *  Insert hook in ch-1 & draw loop thru, insert hook in last loop of prev st & draw loop thru, insert hook in same place where last loop of prev st was made & draw loop thru, insert hook in back loop of next sc & draw loop thru, thread over & draw thru all loops on hook.  Rep from * around [18 star sts in rnd].  Join with sl st to top of ch-3, sl st in fastening ch of 1st star st.

4th rnd:  Ch 1, 2 sc in back loop only of same fastening ch where sl st was made, * 2 sc in back loop of fastening ch of next star st.  Rep from * around [36 sc].  Join.

5th rnd:  Same as 3rd rnd [36 star sts].  Join; sl st in fastening ch of 1st star st.

6th rnd:  Ch 1, sc in back loop only of same fastening ch, * 2 sc in back loop of fastening ch of next star st, sc in fastening ch of next star st.  Rep from * around [54 sc].  Join.

Cont in patt, inc 18 sts on each sc rnd, end with 5th rnd of star st [90 sts].  Join.

Next rnd:  Ch 1, sc in back loop of each fastening ch around [90 sc].  Join. 

Piece should meas about 8” in diameter. 

Rep last 2 rnds once more.

Next rnd:  Sc around, dec to 80 sts.  Join.

Following rnd:  Sc in each st around.  Join; turn.

Next rnd:  Work sc’s in back loops only, inc in every 8th st [90 sts].  Do not join. 

Work sc around for 1 ¾”.  Sl st into next st.  Ch 1, turn. 

Next rnd:  Work in front loops only, work sc around.

Work 1 rnd of 90 star sts, then 1 rnd of 90 sc. 

Rep last 2 rnds once more. 

Work 2 more rnds of 90 sc, 1 rnd dec to 80 sc, then 1 more rnd of 80 sc.  Join; fasten off. 

FINISHING: 
Insert wire circles in top & bottom of spool. 

Tack top wire in place. 

Tack last row of hat to ridge at inside of bottom of crown, over bottom wire. 

Make bow, sew on ribbons as illustrated.

NOTE: 
To make this hat extra special, add a veil of net, lace or dotted-swiss in a matching color.
