1945 Fancy Turban & Purse #221


Color wheel combinations…Festive accents for any wardrobe!

TURBAN MATERIALS:
Hiawatha Belastraw Art. #35, 1 tube of main color & 1 tube each of 2 contrasting colors
#0 Steel Crochet Hook, or #3 Bone Crochet Hook
2 yds Moire ribbon, 2” wide

Main Color = M
1st Contrasting Color = A
2nd Contrasting Color = B

TURBAN:
With M, ch 4.  Join with sl st into ring.

1st row:  Ch 3, 5 dc in ring.  Turn.

2nd row:  Ch 3, 2 dc at base of ch-3, dc in next 4 sts, 2 dc in ch-3.  Turn.  Drop M, attach A.

3rd & 4th rows:  With A, ch 3, work 2 dc at base of ch-3, dc in each dc, 2 dc in ch-3. 

Turn [3 sts inc on each row]. 

At end of 4th row drop A, pick up M, sl st in top of last dc.

5th & 6th rows:  With M, work same as 3rd & 4th rows. 

At end of 6th row drop M, pick up B, sl st in top of last dc.

7th & 8th rows:  With B work same as 3rd & 4th rows. 

At end of 8th row drop B, pick up M, sl st in top of last dc.

9th & 10th rows:  Same as 5th & 6th rows. 

Rep last 8 rows once more, or until side edges measure 13”. 

Continue rotation of stripes, work as follows:

Next row:  Ch 3, dec by working next 2 sts off as 1, work dc in each dc across, 2 dc in ch-3.  Ch 3, turn.

Following row:  2 Dc at base of ch-3, dc in each dc to 2 sts before turning ch of prev row, dec by working next 2 sts off as 1, do not work in ch-3.  Turn.

Repeat last 2 rows [inc 3 sts at one end, & dec 3 sts at other end every 2 rows]
Until long side measures 24”, end with complete stripe. 

Dec 3 sts at each end every 2 rows until 6 sts rem. 

Draw up a loop in each of these 6 sts, work off as 1 st.  Fasten off.

FINISHING: 
Using M, work 1 row of sc along 2 sides, over loose ends of colors.  Fasten off. 

Cut 2/3 yd of ribbon & draw thru crocheted piece as indicated by dotted line on sketch below. 

Drape turban, tie knot in ribbon to hold drape in place. 

Fold rem ribbon into loops & tie this bow into knot of 1st ribbon.


PURSE MATERIALS:
Hiawatha Belastraw Art. #35, 1 tube of main color & 1 tube each of 2 contrasting colors
#0 Steel Crochet Hook, or #3 Bone Crochet Hook
9” Zipper
Lining Material & Buckram
Button Mold

Main Color = M
1st Contrasting Color = A
2nd Contrasting Color = B

PURSE:  First Piece: 
With A, ch 4.

1st row:  11 Dc in 4th ch from hook.  Drop A, attach M.

2nd row:  With M, ch 3, work 2 dc in each of next 4 sts, dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in each of next 4 sts, dc in top of turning chain.  Ch 3, turn [20 sts].

3rd row:  [Dc in next st, 2 dc in next st] 4 times; dc in next 2 sts, [2 dc in next st, dc in next st] 4 times; dc in last 2 sts.  Drop M, attach B.

4th row:  With B, ch 3, work dc around, inc 8 sts [incs should be centered at 2 curves only].  Ch 3, turn. 

5th row:  Same as 4th row.  Drop B, attach M. 

Continue working 2 rows of M, 2 rows of A, 2 rows of M, & 2 rows of B until 1 row of 4th stripe of M has been worked.  Fasten off.

Second Piece: 
Starting with B work same as First Piece in following rotation: B, M, A, M.

FINISHING: 
Cut linings & interlining, using crochet pieces as pattern. 

Sew pieces together as last row. 

With M, work 2 rnds of sc around top edges, drawing in to measure 12”.  Fasten off. 

Cover buttonmold with sc in M & sew to one end of top. 

Make a 3” chain at other end & cover closely with sc. 

Before sewing lining, cut away about 1 ½” of buckram at each end of top edge, curving to shape of bag. 

Make outer lining, shirring top edge to fit bag & inserting a strip of cardboard around outside curve. 

Finish lining [with buckram & zipper]. 

Insert lining in bag & sew in place.
