Vintage 1944 Lace Pinafore Dress & Hat #C196

 SIZES:  

2 & 3. 
Directions for size 2 with changes for size 3 in brackets.

MATERIALS [For Set]:

J & P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 3 balls of White or 4 [5] balls of any color

[For Hat only, 1 ball of white or any color is sufficient.]

#2/0 Steel Crochet Hook               
8 Buttons

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:

Shoulder to bottom of skirt:  16” [17”]

Width at hem:  36”  [38”]

GAUGE: 
7 sts = 1”;    
3 sc rows & 2 pat rows = 1”

DRESS: 
Starting at bottom of skirt, make a ch to measure about 40” [7 chs = 1”].

1^ST ROW:  Sc in 2^nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across until there are made 253 [267] sc.  Ch 3, turn.

2^ND ROW:  Sk 1 st, * [insert hook in next st & pull loop thru] twice; [thread over & draw thru 2 loops] twice; ch 1.  Rep from * across.  Ch 1, turn.

3^RD ROW:  Sc in base of ch-1, sc in sp before 1^st single thread, * sc in sp following single thread, * sc in sp following single thread, sc in sp before next single thread.  Rep fro, * across. 

Rep 2^nd & 3^rd rows alternately for pat until piece measures 9 ½” [10”] end with 2^nd row of pat.

NEXT ROW:  Dec across as follows:  Sc in base of ch-1, * [sk 1 sp, sc in next sp] 3 times; sc in next sp.  Rep from * across.  There are on row 145 [153] sc.

Now work back & forth in rows of sc for ¾” for waistband.

NEXT ROW:  With wrong side facing, work as for 2^nd row of pattern. 

Cont working in pat until piece measures 1 ¼” from top of waistband, end with sc row.

FOLLOWING ROW:  Work in pat across 29 [31] sts.  Ch 1, turn.

Work over this set of sts only for Right Back for 1 ¼” [1 ½”] end with 2^nd row of pat.

NEXT ROW:  Work across to within last 12 sts.  Ch 3, turn & work over the rem 17 [19] sts for 3 ¼” [3 ½”].  Fasten off. 

Sk the next 13 sts on last complete row, attach thread & work across next 61 [65] sts.  Ch 1, turn.

Work over this set of sts only for Front for 1 ¼” [1 ½”] end with pat row.

NEXT ROW:  Work across 17 [19] sts.  Ch 1, turn.

Work over this set of sts only for shoulder for 3 ¼” [3 ½”].  Fasten off.

Sk next 27 sts on Front & work over rem sts for other shoulder to correspond.

Sk next 13 sts on last complete row, attach thread & work over rem sts for Left Back to correspond with Right Back.

RUFFLE: 
Ch 81 [87] sts to measure 11 ½” [12 ½”].

1^ST ROW:  Sc in 2^nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across.  Ch 3, turn.

2^ND ROW:  2 Dc in each sc across.  Ch 3, turn.

3^RD & 4^TH ROWS:  Dc in each dc across.  Ch 3, turn.  At end of 4^th row, ch 4, turn.

5^TH ROW:  * Sk 1 dc, sc in next dc, ch 4.  Rep from * across.  Ch 5, turn.

6^TH & 7^TH ROWS:  Sc in 1^st loop, * ch 4, sc in next loop.  Rep from * across.  Ch 5, turn. Fasten off at end of 7^th row.

Sew shoulder seams. 

Attach thread at lower edge of Right Back of skirt & work row of sc [making 2 sc in each pat row & 1 sc in each sc row] across to neck, along neck edge working in sps as for pat, then along Left Back to correspond.  Ch 1, turn. 

Place pin on this sc row on Right Back ¼” down from neck edge, place another pin at center of waistband & pin half way between these 2 pins. 

Place another pin 2 ¼” up from lower edge of skirt & 4 pins evenly between this last pin & the one in the waistband.

2^ND ROW:  Sc in each sc [inc at outside corners of neck & dec at inside corners of neck, as necessary to keep work flat] across to 1^st pin, ch 3, sk 3 sc for buttonhole, sc in each sc across to next pin. 

Cont making buttonhole in this manner at each pin.  Finish row with sc.  Ch 1, turn. 

Work 2 more rows of sc.  Fasten off. 

Sew ruffle half way between neck & armhole edge. 

Sew on buttons.

HAT: [Average Head Size]:

Make ch to measure approx 17” [7 chs = 1”].

1^ST ROW:  Sc in 2^nd ch from hook & in each ch across until there are 108 sc on row.  Cut off rem chin.  Ch 1, turn. 

Work 3 more rows of sc tightly.  Ch 3, turn.

NEXT ROW:  Work as for 2^nd row of Dress.

FOLLOWING ROW:  Work as for 3^rd w of Dress, inc 1 st in every 6^th sp across [to inc 1 st, make 2 sc in 1 sp]. 

Rep last 2 rows once more.

NEXT ROW:  Work as for 2^nd row of Dress.

FOLLOWING ROW:  [Insert hook in next sp & draw loop thru] twice, thread over & draw thru all loops on hook [1 st dec]; dec 1 more st in same way, work sc in each sp across to within last 4 sps, dec 2 sts as before.  Ch 3, turn. 

Cont working in pat, dec 2 sts at both ends of each sc row until piece measures 4 ½” in all, end with sc row.  Ch 3, turn.

TO MAKE RUFFLE: 
Work 2 dc in each sc across.  Ch 3, turn.

NEXT ROW:  Dc in each dc across.  Ch 4, turn. 

Now work as for 5^th, 6^th & 7^th rows of Ruffle of Dress.  Fasten off. 

Sew straight edges together at back of Hat. 

Work a row of sc along shaped edge at back of Hat.
