1944 Fancy Tucked Lace Crochet Dress #C199

Start at the neck to crochet this dress in an easy, jiffy stitch with decorative tucks.  This will become one of your favorite patterns!

SIZES:  2 & 3. 
Directions for size 2 with changes for size 3 in brackets.

MATERIALS:

J & P Coats, 8 [9] small balls of White or 11 [12] small balls of any color, or

J & P Coats, 4 [5] big balls of White

#7 Steel Crochet Hook

8 Small Pearl Buttons

1 ½ yd ¼” Velvet Ribbon

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:

Length from shoulder to bottom of skirt:  15 ½” [16 ½ ]

Width at hem:  41” [44”]

GAUGE: 
7 sp = 1”,    
5 rows = 1”

SKIRT: 
Starting at waist make a ch to measure approx 26” [15 ch sts to 1”].

1^ST ROW:  Dc in 5^th ch from hook, * ch 1, sk 1 ch, dc in next ch.  Rep from * across until there are on row 146 [154] sps.  Cut off rem ch.  Ch 4, turn.

2^ND ROW:  Dc in 1^st st, ch 1. * in next sp make [dc, ch 1] twice.  Rep from * across.  Ch 4, turn.

3^RD ROW:  Dc in 1^st sp, * ch 1, dc in next sp.  Rep from * across.  Ch 4, turn. 

Rep this last row until piece measures 2”.

NEXT ROW:  Work row of sps as before, end with ch 1.  Join with sl st in 3^rd st of starting ch, thus joining rnd.  Turn.

FOLLOWING RND:  Sl st in 3^rd st of starting ch, sl st in 1^st sp, ch 4.  Dc in next sp, ch 1 & cont working sps & joining rnds as before until piece measures 9” [9 ½”].  Fasten off.

BODICE:  BIB: 
Work off with pins at top of Skirt the center 22 [24] sps.  Attach thread at 1^st pin, ch 4, work sps across to other pin.  Ch 4, turn. 

Cont working over this section, inc 1 sp at both ends of every 4^th row until there are on row 28 [30] sps.

NOTE:  To inc 1 sp at beg of row, make 1^st dc in dc at base of turning ch; to inc 1 sp at end of row, make ch 1, dc in 3^rd st of turning ch.

Work straight until there are in all from top of skirt 20 [24] rows.  Fasten off.

LEFT BACK: 
Attach thread to top of skirt at left side of back opening.  Ch 4, dc in 1^st sp, ch 1, dc in next sp & cont working across until there have been made 11 [12] sps.  Ch 4, turn.

Work over this section in rows of sps as before, inc 1 sp at inside edge every 4^th row until there are on row 15 [16] sps.

Work straight until there are in all from top of Skirt 24 [28] rows.  Fasten off.

RIGHT BACK:
Work over top of Skirt at right side of back opening to corres with Left Back.

SIDE PIECE [MAKE 2]: 
Make a ch to measure approx 15” [14 ch sts to 1”]. 

Work as for 1^st row of Skirt until there are on row 70 [77] sps.  Cut off rem ch.  Ch 4, turn. 

Work 11 more rows of sps.

NEXT ROW:  Dc in 1^st sp l ch 1, * dc in next sp, ch 1, in next sp make [dc, ch 1] twice.  Rep from * across.

Fasten off.  This is outside edge.

TUCKS: 
Fold Bid at 4^th row so that dcs of 3^rd row fall bet this row. 

Attach thread in 1^st sp, insert hook in same sp & draw loop thru.  * Sk 1 dc o 4^th row & 1 dc of 3^rd row & in next sp make sc, ch 2 & sc.  Rep from * across.  Ch 2, turn.

2^ND & 3^RD ROWS:  Make sc, ch 2 & sc in each ch-2 loop across.  Ch 2, turn.  Fasten off after 3^rd row. 

This completes one tuck.  Sk 3 rows of sps, make another tuck across next row of sps. 

Cont working row of tucks over every 4^th row of sps across Bib. 

Work ticks on Left & Right Back of Bodice in same way. 

Starting on 2^nd row of sps, work tucks over each Side Piece, having last row of tucks on last row of sps. 

Starting on 29^th row from bottom of Skirt, work tucks back & forth joining rnds with sl st in 1^st sc made. 

Rep tucks to bottom of Skirt.

FINISHING: 
Sew Side Pieces to Bib. 

Work 2 rows of sc along Left Back to top of Skirt. 

Work 1 row of sc along Right Back, then on next row make 8 ch-7 button loops evenly spaced. 

Sew buttons on Left Back to corres. 

Starting at center back run ribbon thru row of sps at top of Skirt.
